Do you guys still like your Walther P99 ??

For: vyper005

I have put about 700 rounds through my P99 QA .40

I haven't had what I consider a problem. Just a couple of nit-picks.

... I had one failure to feed early on, but it was an obvious limp wrist shot. Since then no problems.

... the blueing (or whatever is used) on the barrel shows a bit more wear than with the glocks or hk's that I have owned. Doesn't look like its affecting anything materially, just the color.

... I had to file down some of the sharp edges in the plastic around the mag well. There seems to be more sharp edges compared to glock or hk.

... final nit-pick - no Insight M light available yet. I sure its only a matter of time, but none that I know of out yet except for the clumsy one that Walther makes that fits under the lazer.

.... final, final nit-pick - I still have not been able to determine if you can drop in a 9mm or .357 barrel in your P99 like you can with a glock.

Overall, very satisfied with my P99 QA. I can honestly say that my search is over for a house gun. And, I have tried everything out there, spent alot of money & time.

Mr Pub,
Just curious...How come you didnt get the P99 in 9mm or with the reg 2 stage trigger ?? I'm about to pick up my Military P99 in 40 real soon...For some strange reasom I getting all warmed up to a 9mm one..maybe in that cool Chrome/Satin finish...Does the QPC have a QA like trigger or a Reg one ?? Thanks...

I don't like the DA/SA trigger. I want one consistant pull, just like with a glock. I feel that if I am ever in a real gun fight, I want my first shot to count. I don't want to worry about what stage the trigger is in or whether a manual safety is on etc.

I don't think that the QPC has the QA "quick action" trigger, but I don't know for sure.

As far as 9mm vs. .40. Nothing wrong with 9mm. In fact, I may add one to my collection along with the new .22

No I don't. I have a .40 and I'm not sure that two extra rounds are worth the $125 per magazine. Heck, I could buy a backup gun for that - :D

If I had a 9mm i might. I think that Earl's has them as well as others.

I just picked it up !!

And I'm excited..:) The gun really appears to have quality written all over it...It came with all the usual stuff including the cool German test target...I noticed that the gun was bone dry so I took it apart and put a little bit of breakfree on the inside...I also used that little yellow punch(With the help of a hammer) to knock out the backstrap pin...That damn pin was tight !!...I tried all 3 backstraps and found that the medium one fits my hand the best...A couple of my friends checked it out and the first thing they said was,"This thing feels pretty good "...I'm pretty happy so far but as they say..."The proof is in the pudding"...I just hope she shoots as good as she looks...By the way...Any more P99 stories ??

Congratulations. You might try putting some oil on the outside of the entire barrel. As I mentioned previously, I had some of the blueing come off the outside of the barrel. I don't know if that will stop it but it couldn't hurt.

good luck. I also went with the medium backstrap.

someday I will post a pic of my P99 with the agrip on it.

I think that posting pictures is easier now with the new software TFL is using.

Well guys, and gals,
I like my P99.
Yes Mylhouse, I have another one!!!!!!
Gaston beware!!!! Walther Man has returned!!!!:p

Glocks may come, and Glocks may go, but Walthers are FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

Congrats on the 3 Walthers Denfoote...Thats pretty sweet !!

Mr Pub,
I oiled the complete gun...I never shoot a gun bone dry...

The P99 fits my hand really well, it's light, and reasonably compact, but I wouldn't buy one for at least two reasons:

1. A friend has one and after a couple of hundred rounds without cleaning (using name brand factory ball ammo) it starts to malfunction.

2. I've read in several places that P99's are now imported exclusively by S&W, and I refuse to buy ANYTHING that puts cash into that company's pocket. (If I've been misinformed on S&W being the importer, please set me straight on this.)

Hank,
That is what I thought too. Walther handguns are imported exclusivly by Earl's Repair Service in Tewksbury Mass. I think Walther backed out of the S&W deal when the "agreement" was signed. His web address is www.waltherusa.net .

This is incorrect. Walther-USA also imports Walther P-99s into the US market. Walther-USA stated emphatically after the S&W agreement that they were NOT part of the agreement and would not abide by it's terms. However, they do still have the import/distribution agreement with Smith&Wesson in Springfield, MA. The "Walther-USA" portion is a chain link caged area within the plant about 50x50'.

Understand the avoidance of the S&W made .40S&W P-99s, but avoiding P-99s manufactured in Germany hurts Walther, not S&W.

Now that the Clintonista's are gone, and S&W is owned by a US company, expect S&W's agreement to fade away by Shot Show 2002.

Regards,
James

Hank B: I would tend to take the story of the Walther P99 malfunctioning with factory ammo as another urban legend.
It is well known on this site that I hate plastic pistols but I do buy them and test them so when you hear praise from a guy like me that hates plastic pistols it would do you well to pay close attention to what I have to say. Here it is:
I have found the Walther P99 (original german) to be the best plastic pistol on the market bar none. I have shot extremely dirty reloads through mine and had no problems whatsoever.
It is way more accurate than most of the Glock 9mm's I have personally tested and way safer too. The accuracy too is also consistant with few if any flyers. It will shoot lead and very accurately too I might add. I have shot some 1 inch groups with mine and I can shoot 2 inch groups with lead bullets all day long without even half trying. Contrast this to my two Glocks. They are basically 3 inch shooters. The Walther's trigger pull is very good indeed and light years ahead of Glocks creapy trigger pull. Workmanship is first class. You get three interchangeable back straps to fit various size hands and you get ajustable sights with a couple of different height front sight blades.
If I had to choose amoung the various plastic pistols the choice would definetly be the Walther without hesitation. W.R.

Extremist,
Thanks for the correction. Earl's web site declares them to be an exclusive distributor. I personally buy from him, rather than Walther-USA!!! Mine is an old Interarms P99 that shoots every bit as well as the one I sold in a fit of anger when S&W/Walther-USA signed the "agreement". :barf:

Wild Romanian--Your experience with the P99 has been noted, but to carry on about how great this gun is ,is a sure sign that your tests are NOT COMPLETE enough yet. MY P99 came with 2 recoil springs, since different FACTORY loads will not work with only one.I wonder why you did not mention that, or the fact that the triggers on some (GERMAN) models had to be changed so as not to fail to fire as mine did. .At times the trigger would be pressed to the rear most position, and still not let off. My glocks have never had any problems like that.. Of all the guns I have I think the HKs are the best by far. When it comes to the BEST thats a matter of opinion, based on ones experience with other similar products.Do some more testing, and watch how your opinions will change. Mine does all the time:D

Wild Romanian, when I see it with my own eyes, I regard it as fact, not legend. During a shooting class we were at, a friend was shooting a P99 in 9mm using Winchester 9mm ball ammo. Worked fine until around the 400 (?) round mark when the slide started failing to go into battery. Walther had already replaced the spring, so presumably that wasn't the problem. After cleaning, it worked fine...for another couple of hundred rounds, when the same problem came up again. So it's "dirt intolerant." Clean, it's a fine pistol...but let it get just a little dirty, and there are problems.

I shoot the same brand of ammo out of my BHP - bought from the same source - and completed the whole class (around 1200 rounds) with no problems at all.
