Do you clean your guns before.

This thread also reminds that there are certain advantages to a revolver--I am a semi-guy but am entertaining the purchase of a revolver as what collection is complete without both? Nevertheless, I don't believe one ever "breaks-down" a revolver (I realize that there are more parts in most revolvers than semis but they are not accessible via a 'simple' breakdown process).

I always clean a new gun down to the firing pin to familiarize myself with it and to remove the packing grease.

You can debate whether the packing grease is a lubricant or not, but the bottom line is I have no way of knowing if it is. It could be just a rust preventative in which case it isn't going to help. And the fact that I don't know how it works isn't going to help either. So it's best to take some responsibility for it's care and operation from the very beginning.
