Do you carry every time you go out?

outside and at home 24/7

I carry outside and at home and on the job: 24/7.
6 people I know became victims of burglars while they were at home.

"Your safe at home" is a very common mistake. Ask yourself why you should be safe at home and you soon realize that there is no gound for that assumption.

Well, I can't recall anybody ever implying that the world was necessarily a 'safe' place ...

However, while Prudence and Paranoia may both start with the letter 'P', I can't think of much else they have in common. ;)

The possibility of coming home to an intruder ...

Just my thoughts ... but while being surprised after having already entered a home without any indication of an intruder being present is one thing, having some advance indication before entering may be something else ...

FWIW, I've received some degree of training when it comes to searching and clearing residential/commercial structures and properties. I get frequent opportunities to practice these skills in the course of my LE duties, too.

At work I have additional resources available on a daily basis for such situations ... in the form of a partner, additional units (plainclothes & uniformed), K-9's and even mutual aid (should it merit more resources than available in any one agency at any particular time). Like many cops, I've been called to assist outside agencies in such circumstances, too.

I generally have more equipment available during working hours, too.

Naturally, like most other folks who think of such things, I've considered my reaction to returning home and finding indications of my home having been forcibly entered.

Unless I heard my wife inside calling for help, or had reason to believe she was actually inside and in immediate need of help, I'd call in the local agency and let them do their thing. They have resources similar to mine when I'm working, none of which I have at hand when I arrive home, in another jurisdiction.

Since the question was just Do you carry every time you go out?, I'll skip the what-if's of remaining home ...

Since I'm not required to remain armed off-duty, however, and there are still situations and circumstances in which I feel I do not feel it necessary, appropriate or simply desirable to be armed on my own time ... there are times when I choose not to go out armed.

This doesn't mean my usual awareness is in any way degraded or lessened, however, or that my ability to react strategically or tactically is completely neutered.

If I take the dog out or the trash out I have my G26 on me. I'm slowly getting my wife into that mindset also. So yes. If I step outside the door I'm armed and so is the wife.

I can't carry at work but they have no problem with it being in my car. One of my boses has CCW. Another wants to get hers. I've taken her shooting before and she likes it.

The only time I don't carry is at the gym in the morning. Besides that, if I leave the house I have on of my escorts with me.

If you see me outside my house, I'm armed. No if's. If the problem comes up that I must enter an "official" building, its safely secured in the vehicle in the proper manner. As for those idiot "gun free" zones like stores and malls, what they don't know might save my life, or theirs.....church is not a problem, I come from the country. Most everyone has grown up with firearms in one form or another.

Yes and no. I always have my common sense and situaltional awareness with me, almost always a knife or two, and often a pistol. I try to match my preparedness to the threat level.

Carolina boy stuck in Cali.... Can't get a permit here for love nor money. Is it worth not being able to buy firearms legally again or destroying my career to carry? Tough question, because my life and the lives of those that love are on the other end of it... Course how much of a life will I have and how can I take care of loved ones if I got busted? Hard to figure why they make it so hard . . .

I am carrying if I am awake, including while at home.

I am always amused/amazed by the clairvoyant people who apparently know when they need to carry and when it is OK to leave the CCW at home.
Carry 24/7 or guess right.

I will respect 30.06 posted signs and obey the law(s). We try to not shop at business's that post legal 30.06 signs.

to copenhagen, if you can, move out of cali. I don't think I could live in a state that would not allow me the freedom to protect my family. I know that may not be a realistic option, but it is something to consider. And I would write all my respective state and local gubmint critters and tell them WHY.

As for the posted no gun signs, some are just tiny little gun with a circle around it crossed out stickers, that are often posted very inconspicuously, and I just "didn't see those, oops."

As far as the "more official looking" signs that state except as otherwise allowed by law" yada, yada, whatever, does having an official government permit, issued by the state, make ME "otherwise allowed by law"?

And of course, banned places on the list, like schools, ect, I never carry in. That would be in direct violation of the letter of the law.

Derius T, plan on moving out of California as soon as possible. Unfortunately, I do not have a choice at this time. My plan is to move back to SC. I have written a few of the state legislatures here and recieved no reply, so got a bit disheartened. I try to do everything the right way, but it seems discouraging when the system is so.. Well it is like having a conversation with a rock I think.

Nope, not always. There is more to being prepared than carrying a gun and I'm confident that I make the right choices for my own circumstances.

I rarely enter or leave home unarmed.

Me too. If someone breaks into my house while I'm away and then breaks into my safe, which, lets be honest, given enough time (like an 8 hour workday) any safe is vulnerable, then said person will be better armed than me. That doesn't mean I'm going in the door guns ablaze if I find a strange vehicle in my driveway upon returning home. But, at least I'll be armed while the police are getting there.

I rarely go to places on the "do not carry" list and when I do I tend to park elsewhere and leave my gun in my vehicle.

copenhagen, come to VA, we still have open carry laws :)

as for me, I am only unarmed when I'm in bed, unless otherwise prohibited.

For those who are unable, or choose not to, carry 24/7, I can only say I hope if you are ever in a "situation", it's not one of those times you couldn't/didn't carry. I only know how bad I'd feel if I were unable to stop a crazed person because I wasn't armed at the time, and would not wish that on anyone.

I only started carrying after the VT massacre, and put a lot of thought into it. As a Christian, doesn't my feeling the need to "protect myself" from harm mean I don't trust God to keep me safe, as He has for 40 years? And I have to answer that a Yes, if I carry because I'm afraid. But as I thought more on it, I realized it's not so much myself, but those around me who are too blind to realize we are to be our brothers keepers, so if I have the training, skill set, mental attitude, etc., to be willing to save a stranger in need, should I not do that? And moreover, if I were out and about, but not carrying, and something like the kid who walked into the Omaha mall happened, and I could only cower whilst others were shot down, how terrible would I feel for the rest of my life??? That is why I carry. I don't have clairvoyance, and I'll never know when it might be needed. I don't expect anything to happen at home, I have both a dog and a security system, but just is case, I have my gun on me (also, if it's on me, there is ZERO chance of one of the kids touching it) and it teaches my kids awareness and makes them extremely comfortable around guns. I even bought them some air guns to practice with (they are only 9/7/2) at this point.

I am an NRA member and a VCDL (Va Citizens Defense League) member. VCDL does weekly updates on what's going on within the state legislatively, as well as Letter's to the Editor on gun topics, etc., and stories in papers around the country where a gun owner protected themselves or others, or stories of people unprotected and how terrible harm was done to them because they had no preparation. I have to say that those weekly updates have been the most eyeopening thing for me that made me realize the scope of the 2nd Amendment. Even if you are not in VA, if you like reading about government attempts to intrude and citizens steps to fight back, as well as being aware of what the anti gunners are doing, it's a really good newsletter. Check them out at vcdl.org

If I am awake, I am carrying. At home or out and about it does not matter.

I do not have one of the future seeing devices that alot of clairvoyant people apparently have - they can predict when crimes are likely to occur as they only carry at certain times. Amazing stuff !

Just my two cents worth...people that say " I only carry when I think I will need it" strike me as funny because that sounds like saying "I only try to foresee the unforeseeable."
