Do I Really Need a Ruger GP-100 ??

Very Fond

I have become very fond of these guns. I like the other guns in the house. But, I feel very attached to the Six Series and the Dan Wesson. They are kind of like pieces of a by-gone era that is slowly fading away. The longer I have these guns the more unique they become.

I think what I will be doing is the same process as I used to acquire these fine revolvers...start saving up the money and when a used but cared for GP-100 presents itself be ready to hand over the cash. Just be patient and wait for the opportunity to arise.

Need? No.
One thing I like about my GP100 is the improved trigger over the Speed/Security Sixes. There's no 'hump' in the middle of the GP100's DA trigger pull like there is with the SS models. My DA shooting is better with the GP than it was with my S&W model 10 or Security Six.
Full power loads are easier in recoil as well.
Current GP quality is very impressive.

Nope!

But I would suggest getting a .357 Ruger Blackhawk instead... Or move up from the peanut caliber to a .45 Colt Blackhawk :) . There is nothing wrong with being the odd man out!

I bought my 6" Security Six in 78. Got a SP 101 in 95, and a 4" GP in 2004. I like being the "Odd Guy" at the range, everyone else is into Glocks...

I still prefer the trigger on the Six, a spring kit and some 20 odd thousand rounds have it pretty well limbered up. I also fell into a Blackhawk in .45 Colt in 95. Them big holes always bring a smile to my face.

You may not need a GP-100, but there's nothing wrong with wanting another revolver...

I have a 6"gp100ss. Its a great gun and wouldnt get rid of it, but i have it because i dont have a dan wesson or 686. I do believe that the dan wessons were the gps of their day and by that i mean made like tanks. nothing wrong with what youve got if it were me id spend the money on something else. Dont spend your money just to keep up with someone else, youll spend your money on that and by that time theyll get something else youll have to buy too. Like others have said if you get one do so because of YOU not them.

Too late. It's already in your head so you may as well get one. Good thing about the GP100 is you can buy used and never worry about if it was abused or not.

You have some good guns, but the Ruger GP 100 is a more advanced version of the security six. In my opinion it is always room for another gun.

At one point I had a dozen 357's. 2 686 snubs, 1 66 snub 3 or 4 GP100's, a 4 inch 686, 2 j frames, a SP101, a security six, and a few I am forgetting.

Each one had it's place. I like full sized snubbie guns for belt carry or as a vehicle / downstairs kitchen gun. The 66 snub carried great on a belt as well. The ruger were 3 or 4 inch guns I used for field carry in a holster. The Sp as well since it was up for hot loads and I liked it for when I wanted to carry 180 gr rounds but less metal on my hip. The J frames one wears boot grips, one a full grip in case I want to carry it on my belt.

All in all they all had their place, I have since thinned it out a bit (partly for the space, partly because if I teach a friend to shoot and they want a revolver I will often sell one of mine, say a 686-4 snub and then get to have the fun of finding another one in a pawn shop.) but always find another here or there. You can ad a GP for sure, just look for it to fill a spot utility wise so it's not just a purchase for the heck of it... maybe a 3 inch gun either regular or the Wiley Clapp one. Makes a great carry revolver IWB or OWB.

Nope. I like the GP but you don't need to buy one with what you all ready have. Buying one because you want to is a different story.

Something that hasn't been brought up yet is how much crack your range friends are on. GP over the Sixes and/or a DW? Come one now, what a joke.

The guns you already have don't take a backseat to the GP or pretty much any other .357 wheelgun for that matter.

Need a GP100?

Heck, I needed a second one. ;) The one at top was in the used gun case at the LGS, and I just liberated it from layaway.

“Is there any need to invest a load of cash in another revolver to keep up with the Jones? Or, should I just stay odd-man-out?”

You have answered you own question. If you really wanted to own a GP100, you would not have to ask anyone for advice. Observing what you already own, I have no doubt that you will still have many years of great use and enjoyment with them.

Some of us simply love to handle, buy and shoot different guns. It never entered my mind to buy a gun just because someone else had one and I did not want to be overshadowed. I bought and buy a gun because I WANT IT.

That said, over many decades I have added guns to my collection solely because of the joy it brought me owning and shooting quality guns. I consider the GP100 to be one of the finest .357 magnum revolvers ever made. I use mine with as much satisfaction as I do with my Smython, Colt Python or S&W 686.

At present, I own a 3” and a 4” GP100. They are sturdy, reliable built with quality components and extremely accurate. IMO, they are not concealed carry guns but serve me well as protection against any kind of attack while I walk desert or mountain trails. In addition, I enjoy them as target revolvers at the shooting ranges.

"Keeping up with the jones?"
Son the Jones will be hard pressed to keep up with you!
I would love to see a pic of your collection.

5 Good Wheelguns?

What you need are 3 more hands.

You remind me of my Old Man..... 3 motorcycles and one bee-hind to sit on them.....

**1 Dan Wesson Model 15-2 in .357 Magnum with the 4" and 6" barrels (Monson era production)
Let me get this right..

You have a Monsoon Dan, and your friends think a GP 100 is "more stout"?

You don't need another gun, you need better informed friends.
