Disgusted! Armchair Commando-ism and Pulblic Admissions of Guilt

During my lunch I decided to check out the PX Annex (on Camp Lejeune), Small selection of handguns, but I'm in the market so i figure "why not?"

At the counter the older gentleman was showing a 1st LT and a Gunny SIG's newish 5.56 pistol. Telling them how his rips holes in paper, no problem. How he had a forearm on it. How, you didn't hear this from me, the sear was easy to file down.

%&*&*(&&!!!! Goes my brain. This is complete &**(&&**!

The Lt then asked to see a Baby Eagle, how he liked it because was thin, unlike the Colt (1911). The older gent kept fighting w/ the safety and the slide (to clear it) and just handed it over.

The older gent tells him how the BE (a 9 mil) holds 14 or 15, how he has the .45 and it holds 12...

And I walk out of the store before I lose my bearing.

How are people like this selling firearms? Really? Misinformed, admitting they go outside the law, snobiness. Every day I sell more stock in humanity.

Regards and Semper Fi!

I work with a guy that spews this stuff on a regular basis: Everything from all you have to do to make an SKS fire full auto is to flip the sear over, to slipping a baby bottle nipple over the muzzle to have a silencer. I've also worked with people who claim to do "wet" work for the CIA when they were a Special Forces SEAL, and mile long shots taken with a .308 Sniper MG. I just ignore it.

The gunshop commandoes who spout this drivel (usually Glockaholics too) I consider to be akin to prostitutes on the street hawking their gamy wares claiming it will be the best you ever had, they know how to make you happy, yatta, yatta yatta.

They don't know what they are doing and they will NEVER get my money, but if some chump falls for it, I pity 'em.

Unfortunately, Ive found this to be the norm rather than the exception. Most sales people Ive encountered have no idea about anything technical that they are selling. Ex. I bought a HK P30 last week. And out of going to several local stores not one sales person could explain the different variant triggers nor did they even know which variants they had in stock. One person looked at me like I was the idiot and said there was no difference in the triggers.

In this day I have found the internet to be my primary place to go to for knowledge/advice then I go to the store knowing much more than the clerks at the store.

I get tired of armchair commandos too. A kid once told me that he had a Glock 18 that his grandpa brought back from WWII. I told him they weren't even in business until the 1970s (found out it was really 1963). Either way, that's a few decades on the wrong side of WWII.

I also heard someone tell a customer to buy a Springfield XDM because the M&P semi autos explode all the time and that Glocks are infamously unreliable. ooookayyy.

Anyone who advocates illegal FA modifications is an idiot. That's illegal and could potentially get your customer many years in a federal prison. Believe it or not, the BATFE does not play games when it comes to restrictions on FA. Irresponsible, stupid, etc. choose your favorite.

I buy my guns almost exclusively from J&G Sales, using my local FFL (a very nice mom & pop place about 5 min from my house) now. I still go to big box gun shops to fondle pieces before I buy them. Sportsman's Warehouse was always pretty good to me, but I don't live near one anymore.

I've also worked with people who claim to do "wet" work for the CIA when they were a Special Forces SEAL, and mile long shots taken with a .308 Sniper MG.
Nothing makes me more furious than fakers. As a veteran of OEF V, I think it is one of the ultimate insults to have someone fake a combat record/experience. Having been there and done that, and received the t-shirt, I know BS when I hear it and call them on it EVERY time. Sort of like DeNiro in "Ronin". What color is the boathouse, *expletive deleted*?

Uh..technically they do make 12 shot 1911's. They're 14 shot, but some people down-load them.

More likely he didn't know what he was talking about ;) But...

There are alot of real morons out there though....

Yeah, but all the INTERESTING stuff that you learn from those guys...

-Like the SAFETY on a SIG 229 (as the guy points to the Mag release)

-That a .243 is in no way good enough for hunting but a 5.56 is a real deer-gun

-That you can shoot .40 S&W in a 10mm autoloader if you want a cheaper practice load

and on and on and on

The best gunstore guy I know (Hey Chris!) frequently looks at you and says "I don't know, give me a minute to look that up".

Depends on the size of the magazine. STI 2011 frames take double stack magazines - I believe they typically hold 12, but it depends on the length of the magazine.

Actually not. If it is not fully interchangeable with the prior US service pistol it is not a 1911. A Para-Ordnance, STI, etc, etc, may look and operate somewhat like a 1911, but it is not A 1911. I won't even get into the details about 1911, 1911A1 and Government Model.

And who defines what "is" and what "isn't" ? This has got to get interesting at some point... is there a 12-man panel and a constitution? Does a Wilson Combat pistol qualify? (FLGR) How about a Kimber? (Schwartz safety) What about one with a bushingless barrel? Can: open. Worms: Everywhere.

I'm not complaining... I'm just sayin'!

As for idiots on the dealer's side of gun counters, here's the most recent one I can forward. Guy at work who is familiar with firearms (had some rifles in years past, never owned a handgun) gets the Obama fever last fall and figures it might be a decent idea to buy one for home use. We talk daily and discuss brands, calibers and options. He shows up at work one day after visiting the local Gander Mountain the evening before.

"There's a real wacko working there" he tells me. Some of the lines he recalls, amongst many similar, from the gun salesman behind the counter:

"These Kimbers are nice and pretty, but if you need to go in to the bush, Glock is what you want. Put it this way... I show my Kimber to my friends, and I show my Glock to my enemies!"

"Now a Glock will get it done but you might consider a revolver if you are worried about leaving evidence behind. See, the brass stays in it so you don't have to pick it all up AFTERWARD."

Now I'm not concerned about my buddy getting poor service at a gun counter... he's not an idiot, he knows to keep looking and keep doing his homework and to avoid this particular guy. (he ended up with an XD9 compact from a long established large local gun store, not a gun counter run by a mall ninja in a sporting goods store) But I am quite concerned about the rest of the unknowing public who's first contact with the idea of buying their first handgun comes from this camo-clad moron.

Suffice to say, I see where you are coming from in this thread!

If you want one you can buy a big ugly drum mag for your 1911. The point here is not what is or isn't out there for sale, but rather how stuipid some of the people are who are trying to sell it to us. Those of us who care about the future of guns in this country (most here) hate to see this. It isn't when they try to pass $h!# off on us so much as knowing that they are spredding it allover less informed folks who don't know anybetter. Bad info is worse than no info. I don't know what to do about it. Maybee some of the imployers will read this thread and take note of things being said in their shops.

The best thing to do would be to repeal the NFA, then no one would have to concern themselves with abiding by its asinine requirements.

What does the NFA have to do with idiots in gun shops?

My all time favorite gun store super-genius line was from some retard in the Michigan Cabella's "The .50 Desert Eagle is the standard issue sidearm for all members of the Israeli Defense Force. Men and Women!"

LOL I've been part of the culture for almost 18 years now. This nonsense STILL burns me! Bunch of har-tards....

As far as the ".45 holding 12," the old guy was talking about the BE .45 holding 12. I know this is a lie because my old roomie had a BE .45 and I've had 2 Witness .45s (same company makes the frames). They hold ten (10). Unless you have CPMI +2 extentions. Which Brownells hasn't had since late 05 or early 06.
