Disappointed in the Glock grip

Hi,
I am
shopping for a new 9mm and have decided between the M&P full size or a Glock 17. Before even handling either, I really was leaning toward the Glock, but
this morning I went to my local gun store and for the FIRST time got to handle both gun and to be honest, there is no comparison, at least to me! the M&P immedlately felt SO much more comfortable and better in my hand to the Glock 17!
I actually was a bit disappointed because I REALLY wanted to like the Glock more but I can deny the obvious. The grip on the Glock is just not pleasing or
comfortable and the M&P is the exact opposite.

Anyone else here have the same experience with the first time handling a Glock 17, or any gen 4 Glock for that matter??

Thanks!

Don't feel guilty or upset ! The fit in your hand is important !
They have improved the trigger on the M&P though you can still get a good aftermarket trigger if you like . Enjoy it !:)

The grip on the Glock is just not pleasing or comfortable and the M&P is the exact opposite.

This varies by person. I'd agree that on the whole I think the average person prefers the grip on the M&P over the Glock. I've owned at least a half dozen of both and ended up shooting the Glock better and for my hands the frame shape and layout really works well. There's really no right or wrong answer here. Get what you like and enjoy!

I traded in a G22 because of the grip. The gun beat the H out of my hand every time I shot it. I liked the gun, but did not like shooting it all.

just dont handle a Browning HP....with the plastic grips....or you will be wanting one....huge difference between Browning wood and the plastic....the wood feels too "blocky to most...the plastic feels perfect....but....you can get several aftermarket wood grips that are very very nice....makes the BHP point to where your minds eye wants it to point

your two main points of interaction with a pistol are the grip, does it fit your hand, and the trigger, can you pull the trigger without upsetting your sight picture?

HK VP9s have great grips (interchangeable) and great triggers.

find one you like. don't settle.

First time I had ever handled a Glock I thought it felt like something you'd get in the sporting goods department at Walmart that shot plastic airsoft pellets. I own 2 now.

A professor once told me while I was studying piano, that no matter how bad the action is or instrument given you, that you must adapt to that instrument. You do not have the luxury of taking your instrument everywhere you go, like a violinist or vocalist.

To me, firing a Glock and a 1911 side by side, the 1911 points naturally, is well balanced in the hand, and feels all around like a firearm. After firing the 1911, picking up a Glock feels like somebody just handed me a 2x4 with a weird feeling bump on it.

If I could only own 1 handgun it would be a 1911. But since I can own both, I do. Without practice you'll shoot a 1911 as badly as anybody who never shot, and certainly worse than with practice you put on a Glock.

Those in the military and armed forces are issued weapons. They don't have a say in the matters of choice. I know guys from Vietnam, who carried M14s, to this day, have not, and have no interest in, firing a "mattel" toy. Or how great the M9 was, to them, because they are left handed, and loved the ambi safety...until they fired a Sig. And don't personally own a Beretta anymore. All personal preference...

If I'm a 1911 guy, I should be a Glock basher...by internet standards...but I can't bash up something that fits my needs and useage. H&K already builds them.

If the Glock grip is a poor fit, more than likely it would shoot high for you.
The grip has more of an angle than the M&P.
Another vote for not wanting a grip with finger grooves.
Not a great idea unless your hands are a match for them.

thanks

Don't get my wrong, the 4 gen Glocks are amazing and I actually love the look of them, but what is the sense in buying on if it just doesn't feel right in hand?

Also, as you can see, I am in NJ. I have two open permits. I WILL be buying the M&P this week, so I have another permit.

I picked up and handled the CZ 75 P-01. WOW!!! Melts in my hand, it perfect!
Of course being all metal, quite a bit heavier than the M&P, but I will have diversity with one polymer 9mm and one metal 9mm.

I agree that the glock grip is not ergonomic in any way for average sized hands. I also agree that the M&P has a very nice grip. However they can have horrible triggers. And magazine disconnects are hated by many. Some M&Ps have them some don't. Go handle a PPQ from Walther and see how you like it.

yes

P7,

The triggers on current production M&P's has vastly improved to the point when it really is not necessary to do any trigger work, especially for the non-competitve, casual shooter like myself.

The PPQ, just not for me. Way to toyish, comical looking for my taste. Kinda looks like something you get at Toys R Us......just my opinion!

Im a HUGE Glock fan. Ive carried them all over the world and put them to serious use.

That said the M&P points better and feels nicer. My shooting partner put an Apex forward set trigger into one of his and its NICE.

So,i brought home an M&P this week, ordered the Apex trigger, and will start running that gun. See how i like that package.

ok

You really dont need to run out and install Apex trigger in current production
M&P's! I find it comical that guys are still doing this will brand new 2015/2016 production M&P's!

At least shot it first, and than decide!

For those of us who wear X-large & XX-large gloves,
you have to retrain how you hold a gun, to hold a Glock & get the most out of it.
Even with the SF versions...

On the other side, I can pick up any of my other pistols,
and get an immediate lock-grip, & shoot the stuffings out of it!
S&W has long been known for wonderful grips, they learned well from Hogue.
(or stole well, depending on your view ;) )

S&W's are quickly catching up in the Toy department as well...
granted, it'll take anyone a few decades to catch up with Glock Toys,
but they're quickly making inroads :D
Now if they'd go ahead and make a 10mm M&P, I could replace my G20SF...

I have a Gen3 17 and a Gen4 21. Based on my own experience, there is no disputing that an ergonomic grip helps a lot in being able to shoot a particular gun well, and the Glock grip is not the most ergonomic design out there right now. However, IMHO, the only thing that really counts with these guns is consistent reliability and accuracy, and with a reasonable amount of regular practice, I can always vouch for these Glocks.

I don't have enough long term experience with the M&P's to dispute the notion that these are more reliable and accurate than the Glocks, with the same or less amount of practice.

Not to take away from this thread, but I know how you feel, the glock grip has always seemed to fat and angled for me to shoot well. Compared to the glock the S&W feel much better but if you want something in the same price range I would suggest looking at the Walther PPQ :) I finally got to hold one a couple weeks ago and since them I have fallen in love with it. Ergonomically it is the best feeling polymer frame handgun I have ever held. :D just some food for thought

There is a huge difference between the G17/G22 grip and the G19/G23 grip. I much prefer the mid size and I shoot them just as well. I can use the larger mags and give up nothing.
