My first handgun was a Ruger single-six .22/.22mag. My current .22 is a Ruger MKIII. Somewhere in between there was a Dan Wesson 6" .22 revolver. There was nothing at all wrong with the DW except I found it to be too bulky and heavy for me.

first Hand gun I owned was a S&W K22 still have it and shoot it often. I did have a single shot 22 rifle before the K22.

first handgun: my Dad's service revolver .38 Spec. Colt Pos Police @ age 10.
I'd save my $$ to buy a couple of boxes of .38's to take on vacation upstate NY, every summer. Man, could I make those rounds go a long way!

My first gun was a Red Ryder BB rifle ... first one that went bang was a Taurus 85 which I bought for HD ... still have it, still works perfectly ... I have a Smith 22a and an NAA Pug currently if I feel the need to shoot rimfire, and if anybody asks, I always suggest they start their shooting career with a .22LR ...

My uncle taught me to shoot when I was around 10 yrs old so I've been doing this for about 27 yrs and up until recently I had never fired a .22 of any kind. The first gun I ever shot was an old .32 revolver and after putting thousands of rounds through that I moved up .38 then to 9mm.

About 2 yrs ago I decided the cost of ammo was getting out of hand and decided to buy a .22. After shooting a dozen models I decided on a S&W 22A and it's been a great piece since I got it.

Winchester .22 short single shot bolt action when I was 6 yoa.

Oops! Handgun forum. Yes, my first handgun was a Ruger Standard .22 pistol I bought for myself when I was 16 yoa. Bought it at Sears.

I voted yes, the first handgun I fired much was a .22LR. Grampy's High Standard as I recall.

Ironically, the first handgun I bought was a .44 Magnum. But I had a parade of other firearms I was allowed access to on a regular basis well before then; 9mms, .45s, .22LRs, a couple of other .44s, .357s.

Honestly, I cringe sometimes watching new shooters trying to learn with major calibers and lightweight poly frames, etc. While some can learn to shoot passably well, most of what I see on the range makes me think that's a small minority. A little time with good instruction and a quality .22LR can make a world of difference.

Nope, my dad's New Service Revolver in .45 Colt, given to me when I got older. :D

He also has a Titan .25 Auto, but it is rather uninspiring to shoot and neither of us has shot it in probably 20 years.

First handgun I shot in high volume was my Browning Hi Power 9mm.

I did not start with a rimfire. It was a mistake, which a soon realized. My next purchase was a rimfire.
20 years later, I still shoot more 22 than any other handgun caliber.

Did you start out on a .22lr?

Could have, but didn't.

First handgun I bought was a Taurus .357. At the time I ordered it I looked over a Ruger Mark II Target, stainless, that was the same price. I was mightily tempted, but passed it by. It was 20 years before I rectified that error.

I actually started with my fathers Daisy Co2 6 shooter BB pistol. I couldn't begin to remember how many BB's I shot out of that thing. When I got old enough I bought myself a Ruger single six for plinking and small game. Several years later I bought a Ruger Stainless MKII .22 and shot indoor Bullseye competition for 10yrs. In between that time I bought and hunted with a Ruger 44 magnum Super Blackhawk.

.......I see a lot of replies mentioning rifles/shotguns, but this is the Handgun forum and the question clearly is regarding handguns.

The first handgun I remember was a Mattel, Fanner 50. Matched set I might add. :D

My first "real" handgun was a Smith & Wesson .357.

I didn't get a 22 for years after that. I'm trying to catch up now.

old ass re curve
sling shot
paint ball gun
BB rifle
pellet gun revolver style

in that order

BUT the first time I ever fired a gun that uses a primer and powder it was a .38 at the age of 11 and I was hooked
