Definition of an assault weapon

FirstFreedom, would that be a Swiss Army Assault Weapon.

The term "Assault Weapon" is a politically motivated statement for the purpose of scaring unknowing folks into supporting more gun control. There are no hard facts other than people just don't like th looks of them. If we were to go by true threats we would say things like "Assualt SUV" when someone gets run down or a thug tries to outrun cops. "Assault Baseball bat" when some kid fatally clobbers another one. "Assault Rope" is what BTK used to kill his victims. "Assault Penis" for rapes. You can make the list as long as you want.

Truth of the matter is there is no such thing as an assault weapon, simply assault people. The fact that we look to blame things on inanimate objects is only an attempt to move the responsibility of the ills of society away from the real problem which is the destruction of morality and personal responsibility.

To me, an assualt weapon is any weapon being used to assualt something. The Springfield Percussion Cap rifles used in the Civil war are much more of an assualt weapon than a new TEC-9, as are the 03's carried onto Guadalcanal are more of an assualt weapon than my homebuilt AR.

An assualt rifle is something chambered in an intermediate cartridge that s select fire.

The media.....

The term assault weapon is likely a creation of the media? They sure have used it to earth's end. I have heard reports that a revolver was even considered by media as an assault hand gun. True enough, anything used to attack or assault another person is an assault weapon. I think with terminology like that we could also submit these as assault weapons.

*cars, boats, bricks, sticks, fry pans, small furniture, computer terminals and the list is endless......... You know, in my opinion, I would consider someones fist or body parts used to attack another person too?

**What I think the term would likely fit with an educated person(s).
A firearm, semi or full automatic mode of fire, large capacity of ammunition, fixed or detachable magazine, often a former or present military styled combat weapon.

That is just my short definition. ;)

To answer Skeetin: Ohio's larger cities are very anti-gun and this is one of the situations where the few large cities in an agricultural state are setting the tone for the entire state. That is why it took 10 years to get concealed carry and that law is so messed up it is virtually worthless.

The comments I love are about like this:
You can keep your hunting rifles, but you don't need weapons designed only to kill!
Last time I checked, the hunters weren't out there hugging the deer with their hunting rifles.

"Assault weapon", as commonly used, is anything anti-gunners believe should be reserved to the police or military, a notion that totally fails to appreciate the purpose or even existence of the 2nd Amendment.

"Assault weapon" is also associated with a psychological disorder, a hysterical reaction to ugly rifles.

The term "assault weapon" can actually have a discrete meaning if it is used to describe a high capacity rifle on which the full-auto mode is disabled. Otherwise, it could be referred to as a "machine gun", especially when hysterical and attempting to be overly dramatic in describing the weapon..

The person you mentioned is a couple of things.

One is ignorant re firearms.
Another is idiotic.
The third is that he is a double talker.

As to "my" definition, the following definition is not "mine", however it is one I've seen in reference books that deal with small arms. It also appeared at www.britannica.com, which was a free service originally. I don't think it still is.

Assault Weapon was defined as follows. Selective fire weapon, usually of rifle configuration, chambered for an intermediate power cartridge.

At one point, a bunch of congressional whores, no disrespect intended re HONEST WHORES, came up with a reference to "semi-automatic assault weapons". Frankly, I cannot offhand conjure up in my mind an image of such things, however likely someone can.

What makes me angry is that most of the people making these silly assault weapons laws have never shot a gun in their life, but feel qualified to tell others how things should be.

let's put a TFL member in charge of all gunlaws in the nation.........and I'll prepare my mossberg persuader for open carry :D

I don't think police should have rifles with bayonets or uzi's or the like, and I think some folks feel this same way about "the people". That's about the best light I can put on it.
