Definition of an assault weapon

I don't like using the term "assault weapon" in reference to any firearm. You have a point about the "pistol round".... ie 9mm or 45ACP with regard to Uzi's.

But, you know that there are rifles chambered for both the 9mm and 45ACP (Rugers). Even the AR-15 is available in 9mm. I consider that a rifle.

I always thought that submachine guns generally had barrels less than 16" long. But, I could be wrong on that point. My Uzi carbine had a barrel longer than 16 inches.

Military style rifles aren't assault weapons, they're combat rifles. An assault weapon is any object that a person uses to cause another harm ;)

The term "assault weapon" (applied to civilain firearms) is just democrat propaganda used to scare people into voting for them, nothing more.

What baffles me is that they say that an "assault weapon" is more dangerous than a bolt action or something like that. Do they both not have the ability to kill? When one starts saying and thinking that x gun is more dangerous than y gun is when people get careless and someone gets hurt.

Was the guy the Brady campaign is named after a democrat? Anti's come in all shapes and colors nowadays. Dems just have more than the Republicans but the republican anti's should not be ignored or dismissed. But your right about the term "assault weapon" being propaganda for anti's.

The term an 'Assault rifle' has become as meaningless as the mythical 'Saturday Night Special'.

Essentially however it is a rifle chambered for an intermediate cartridge that does not have the power of a full battle rifle but which is more powerful than the pistol rounds used in a Sub machine gun.

Such a firearm is has selective fire.

In keeping with modern military firearms generally It usually has a pistol grip, a magazine capacity of at least 10 rounds, bayonet lug etc

Assault rifle-usually accompanied by apepper rifle :D

Data shows that puns cause more people to die than assault rilfes. (they kill the guy who says the puns) :)

The AWB ended partly because there really is no evidence that it had any effect at all on violent crime and just made more unknowing criminals of unwary gun owners that attached something harmless and aesthetic to their rifle after a certain date.

"any gun with only one purpose killing"

Whew! I've installed a corkscrew in the stocks of all my guns, so the are not those nasty assault weapons, since they have TWO purposes: killing and opening wine bottles.

novus collectus, thanks for the correction. I try not to call dems anti-gunners for the reasons you stated but sometimes I don't think about it.

Rangerdude,
I do it too when I say neo-cons. So I shouldn't be one to preach really. I apologise if I sounded holyier than thou.

First Freedom,
LOL

I have to say this was educational about the finer definitions of firearms. So, where does one look up these terms (definitions) or are they just developed by popular usage?

Too true any gun could kill people even those friendly little daisy air rifles could kill  , if they hit the eye. This is much too broad of a statement, since in reality anything that is a weapon is meant to assault. 7 of my nine guns are tools and strcitly tools as use them not as weapons but means to releive stress. The other two are weapons but only for hunting and they are a savage 30-30 and a muzzleloader.

I know of one homicide that used a BB rifle by Daisy. One shot to the ribcage. I have been attacked by a guy armed with a baseball bat, I considered it an assault weapon. I have even had a Sony 19" portable TV thrown at me.

I always stop someone and ask THEM what weapons do they mean by "assault weapon".

If they can't give a clear and concise of what they are talking about, then I usually prod them like.. "You mean an automatic rifle"?.. they'll usually say "yes".. and then bring up the laws/act of 1934 and 1968..

most of the ignorant people think "assault rifle" that was "banned" are fully automatic M-16's, Uzi's, real AK-47's/74's, Thompson/Grease guns etc..

The term "assault weapon" is entirely a fabrication of one Josh Sugarmann (IIRC) of VPC. Previously he wrote an article espousing the utility of confusing terms used in the world of firearms. "Assault Weapon" was introduced into general usage via a compliant press. Congress in the form of Senator Feinstein who introduced the AWB. The definition used of "Assault Weapon" was purely cosmetic. A particular shoulder gun was included in the list because is scared the good senator or her aide. That explains why the legislation had a curious absence of any reference to cartridges used. An "evil" appearing rifle was illegal while the civvy version was perfectly acceptable. It drove the firearm cognoscenti stark-raving berzerk.

Just remember that any discussion with academic anti-selfdefensers (and that is what they are) will be an exercise in emotions. You may well have to engage is a multi-phased debate. Get the emotions vetted and out of the way then come back and work on a reasoned debate. Take a gander at GunFact appearing at a Google search near you.

the assinine thing is.. the 2nd amendment has *nothing* to do with purposes OTHER than killing another human!

NOTHING about hunting, sport, etc!!

As stated, the term "assault weapon" is meaningless. An "assault rifle" is a select fire weapon firing an intermediate sized cartridge. It was coined during WWII, supposedly by Hitler himself, describing the series of rifles starting with the Maschinenkarabiner 42, the Maschinenpistole MP43/MP44 and ultimately the Sturmgewehr StG44.

Technically assault wepon is a useless term. Anything can be used as a weapon and weapons are meant to assault thus the term assault weapon. I dont consider a shoe an assault weapon it is a very broad term. But since a shoe can be a weapon and it can assault people it is an assault weapon

Well columbus just banned these scary assault weapons because they are weapons of mass destruction.
I didnt realize ohio was anti
