Definition of an assault weapon

Today at school in our politics club the issue of gun control came up. Our guest speaker mentioned that he recognizes shooting can be a sport, but he does not support assault rifles. When I asked him exactly what a definition of an assault weapon was he said " any gun with only one purpose killing"
I would like to ask all the TFL's out there what is your definition of an assault rifle

Assault weapon: Meaningless term used by anti-gunners to describe any firearm that frightens them.

Assault Rifle: A select fire rifle that utilizes an intermediate power cartridge.

Let's see here ...

assault - An unlawful threat or attempt to do bodily injury to another.

weapon - A part or organ, such as a claw or stinger, used by an animal in attack or defense.

so i guess that 'assault weapon' means your mouth.

Any gun that is black, scary looking, or has been in any movies; or any combo of these.
That is too true. I expected some flack beacouse I go to a liberal school but when I said a semi-automatic gun was more humane if you missed the first shot hunting. I was told that millions of deer are killed each year for no reason but us gun advocates sick pleasure

That's a debate you just can't win, because the speaker will simultaneously claim the ability and authority to determine which firearm has a purpose other than killing, and which doesn't. Usually, they find very few firearms that fit into the first category.

I'm afraid I have to agree with Mr Kloos. The problem with an arbitrary term is that it is indeed arbitrary and can be used to label or not label whatever the user wishes.

I realize that I probably wont win this debate but I still want your definitions. I also want to end the ignorance that shooting concentric circles only has one use learning to kill other humans. Since when are humans shaped like concentric circles  Visit rugerdudes thread ingnorant people at school in the general discussion forum for more info

Skeetin'870 - You first have to understand whom you're dealing with. Most of those folks-particularly the loudest ones likely have never handled a firearm in their lives, and if it came down to them harvesting game, would be pushing cattle out of the way so they could graze.

That is their choice-don't let them make your choices!

Dont worry these people will never make my decisions for me. I realize that they are jus talking out their @** but it still pisses me off

Bestiat has the definition about right. True assault weapons have the capability of full auto, but do not necessarily to have the select fire feature. A good example are the Uzi conversions which do not have select fire. The anti-gun definition is essentially any gun that looks "bad" and probably looks like a military weapon such as the AR-15, SKS, any Uzi rifle, AK-47 clones, and so forth.

You have to understand that it is legal to own full auto firearms in most states as long as they are properly registered.

You see you have fallen into the definition trap as well. An Uzi is not a rifle it is a submachine gun. Another example of the anti's using the definition to define a gun they want to ban next. Next you know they'll be calling bolt action rifles assault weapons because of the bayonet lug.

Thank you Novus Collectus. I knew some one would point out some tiny fragment of my comment as being incorrect terminology. I guess you are saying that a submachine gun can not be a rifle too.... BAR? :)

BAR fires rifle ammo. What is an assault weapon (if there really is such a thing) is a rifle that shoots an intermediary round (as mentioned above by bastiat) that is larger and more powerful than a pistol cartridge but less powerfull than most rifle cartridges. A submachine gun fires pistol ammo only.

Correct on the submachine gun definition. When you get to .308 you pretty much leave the 'assault rifle' range and get into 'battle rifle' territory.
