Decocker vs. Putting hammer down w/ thumb

I agree

I hate guns with safeties and such, all my guns are either Decock or Glocks Only..... with a couple revolvers. two of my semi's have decockers, the S&W 4567 and the Ruger P90DC.

Here is an instance where you might have to Manually "decock" your Pistol is with Single Action Revolvers...... don't want to take the shoot on the deer you had lined up then what do you do with the cocked revolver.

Whoa, geeze, thanks for all the replies.
It seems to me that the wisest thing to do is utilize the decocker, and that any fears I had about it failing were unfounded.
Cool.

WHy would you want to decock a Glock or P-32 with a round in the chamber? There isnt a method to do so because there is no reason to do so. If you found a way to decock a Glock or p-32 with a round in the chamber, you would still have to rack the slide to bring the pistol into battery..ejecting the round that was in the chamber. You wouldnt you just carry it with an empty chamber, hammer/striker down...or you could do the unthinkable and carry the way they were designed, with a round in the tube.

What about Witness Pistols GRD and 9x45? Does anyone use them in Action Pistol matches? i guess in that situation you would treat it like a 1911 design. They are standared DA/SA autos with no decocker. It says in the manual that you can carry cocked & locked or hammer down on a live round. I wish the CZ clones had a decocker, but for some reason they dont, so your forced to CAREFULLY lower the hammer by pinching it with your thumb and index finger. A combat style hammer as found on most tweeked 1911's with the open loop fasilitates this much better. Never had a problem so far and I'm on my 3rd Witness and going tommorow to pick up a Baby Eagle (IMI/magnum research's version of the CZ design).

While I commonly use my decockers (on the guns that have them), there are times where I just use my thumb.

IF you are not capable of safely decocking a loaded pistol with your thumb, then you should probably not be in posession of a firearm.

It's a matter of competence.

Just my two cents.

C-&-L Witness

I just eject the live cartridge and THEN lower the hammer (by pulling the trigger. Check my brain size again!)

Why this seeming need to 'hammer-down' your pistol? Cocked-and-locked, or Glock.

Well, I like decockers but not to the expense of a safety. Most decocker guns are decocker only, with the few obvious exceptions like 92's and USP and so on. For example there is no safety to be seen on a Sig and on a CZ you get choose one or the other.

Now, for MY taste, I would like a cambo, mounted on the frame, with decock being UP and safe being CENTER and READY being down. Hey anyone make one of those? For now my CZ gets manualy decocked for the few times I need to do that, most of the time its chamber is empty or its cocked and locked. On the CZ I know I can decock as safely as any mechanical device. I place my thumb between hammer and pin and depress trigger. When the sear is disengaged I release the trigger and let the hammer go to half cock. This means that even if the firing pin safety gets bypassed by the trigger pull my finger acts like one. Your milage may vary.
