decent cheap 9mm plinker and truck gun.

Ohh and one more piece to add to the puzzle.. im from the great commi state of ny, so it needs to be "ny safe act" compliant. Because every one knows a gun is far more deadly with 15 rounds vs 10.

I have shot and loved some very cheap guns... however, I find that it is best to choose 3-4 guns that you would LIKE, ideally that you have shot before... and look for good deals.

I was looking to get a full size .40 to add to the collection. Something under $300 that I could bring to the range, and honestly, leave at the cabin. I found an MP40 (S&W, not the sub machine gun :D ) police surplus for $275. Great gun, lots of holster wear, not THAT many rounds through it. I was thrilled with this deal!

You simply Can't beat the value of the TP9 series. Heck it comes with everything, holsters, two mags, cleaning stuff, mag loader and a hard case for sub 350 dollar range. I want one so bad I can't stand it. But I'm holding out for the TP9SF to come back in stock. That is the version they should have made first. As far as a C9 that old ugly brick will SHOOT!! Well once you get a knack for the trigger. The only pistol I have that the C9 won't out shoot is my CZ82, another cheap (in price) fixed barrel blow back pistol.

What about a Walther PPX? My wife bought it for me, at for a $300 gun it shoots fine.

My daughter has a Taurus PT111G2, we paid $225 for it and it's also a good shooter.

But honestly if you are carrying a SR40 as your primary, I would pick up a SR9e as it has the same manual of arms.

For $350 you'd be hard pressed to find a better gun than a Canik TP9SA or SF. Much better trigger than a Glock and very reliable.

Just can't get past the looks of the Hi-Points, but that's my problem.
If it were me, I'd be looking for a used Israeli Browning Hi-power or a Star Super B 1911 style. Seems to me that AIM and Classic Arms have some around that look pretty good.

Trade your SR40c in for an SR9c. There is a lot to be said for having your carry gun be your range and plinking gun.

If you want a dedicated truck gun, the SCCY CPX is hard to beat for price and warranty.

I haven't actually owned or shot one (yet), but there are plenty of CZ clones out there with very good reviews. The Sarsilmaz (SAR) guns seem to be pretty hot right now, with both the K2P and B6P getting attention. Then there are the EAA Witness, and the Canik/Tristar series as well, that appear to have proven themselves. I've heard good things about the Zastava line too. Lots of options out there in your price range.

Personally, I think that the Stoeger Cougar 8000 (in any of its forms) is one of the best buys for the money. It is essentially a Beretta made in Turkey, which cuts costs. I do happen to own one of these, and I love it. I got mine off of Gunbroker through Shoot Straight for $309 after shipping. Add in transfer fees, and it should still come in under budget. Academy has been offering them at the same price, but it's a question of whether or not they have them in-stock locally.

It seems to me that the disparity between firearms is starting to close in terms of reliability, with name brand recognition and true craftsmanship being the only major differences, which are starting to bare less importance as well.

If you don't mind getting into the surplus market, I've heard fantastic things about the Star Super B pistols.

I apologize that my post is drawing entirely from secondary sources, but as a college student with a budding interest in the hobby, research is about all I can afford :D

Another recommendation for the Stoeger Cougar. Same exact gun as the Beretta except now made by a Beretta subsidiary company.

Alloy frame, 15+1 capacity, DA/SA with decocker, great trigger and super accurate (even with its only 3.6" barrel length).

You can get them at Acadamy Sports for $299.00.

Best 9mm gun deal out there.

Just for grins, here is my Super B. I think it was something like $225, plus about $25 shipping and my friend at the LGS usually doesn't charge me an FFL fee (we discovered that our ancestors had served in the military together).

It is 9mm and looks like a 1911, but no grip safety, easier to field strip, and uses the locking system of the Browning High Power. It is accurate, reliable, and made of steel (I am not a polymer fan). It is probably the best deal I have gotten on a firearm in the past few years, and I have gotten some good deals. :)

I own a CZ P09 and a glock 19. I've owned a canik s120 (steel frame cz75 clone) and it was a very nice firearm. My girlfriend owns a canik tp9sa. The tp9sa has been every bit as reliable as the CZ and the glock. Great gun. Trigger is better than the glock (IMO). It's a little looser kind of like an ak47 compared to an ar15. The tp9sa seems to have a little more space everywhere making it kinda loose but ultra reliable. The glock is just as reliable but seems a tad bit more refined. Worth an extra $300? Up to you..its a damn good shooter for the money and I plan to get one for myself to match my FDE g19 and FDE p09 haha

My first handgun was a Hi-Point C9 that I replaced with a S&W SD9VE. I paid $289.99 for the SD9VE that replaced my slightly used C9 I paid $125 for. The looks and lighter weight was worth every penny of the difference. It is also much easier to field strip and it had performed great with about 600 rounds through it. Both have a lifetime warranty.

Ditto on the Walther PPX, see below link;

Forget CDNN, they will hit you with a restocking fee when they cancel your order since the 16 rd. mags that come with the Walther PPX ain't NY compliant. You sure don't want to buy any gun with 10 round blocked mags, these aren't reliable. See if you can get the Walther PPX locally with 10 round mags (which are available), which will cost you more than what CDNN is selling the PPX with 16 rd. Mags for, but at least you're NY liberally legal.

OBTW, good luck finding a Canik TP9SA with 10 rd. Mags!

I would be looking for a S&W 5906, they make factory 10 round mags for it and being that it is a stainless gun it is easy to use for a range or home defence. They are good solid shooters, I like them so much I bought one for each of my sons.

I'll second the Walther PPX. It's a DAO but has a smooth and fairly light trigger pull. The couple that I have shot were all really accurate. The have a 4" barrel and 16+1 capacity and are going for $299.00 right now.

A good friend of mine sent me a youtube video to watch on the Hi-point C9. My buddy knew I had one, and he's got a number of fine handguns, old and new, semi and revolver. Knowing that, I thought the video was going to be one of those, "oh, no, I can only imagine..." deals, but it was not. I watched the video and it was of two (maybe 3) idiots that tried to, and did, destroy a standard C9. After doing to that pistol about everything imaginable (and unimaginable) you'd never do (and I do mean EVERYTHING) as a normal, safe and caring gun owner, they had to pound a bolt down the bore, chuck it in a vise and set it off with some ungodly powder charge in the cartridge to do the deed. Then, as it was really funny to them, they had a good laugh about that completely destroyed C9.

What I just shared here, is pretty much what I remembered about the video; might be a few things a bit different, but you get the "Hi" point. BTW, after just about every kind of abuse you can think of, that pistol came out shooting, pretty much flawlessly, and that's why my buddy sent me the video (the vise test, of course, rendered the gun useless). To me, that's quite a demonstration of extraordinarily and durable reliability, and my buddy thought so, too.

I don't think I've ever seen such idiotic folly, and it's for any and all to watch if anyone would like to; just enter Hi-Point C9 on youtube and you should be able to find it easily (there's actually more than one episode by these guys destroying the C9). The comment that sets with me after the readouts on the video was, "why don't you do that to a Glock and see how far you get with the same tests as on the C9." I haven't seen that test yet... Then, in a separate C9 episode I believe, they put the totally abused and dead C9 in a pot with a propane burner under it, and melted the pistol to a puddle. Yeah, and that was really funny...

I bought my C9 near 10 years ago now, and I probably wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't offered NIB for 70 bucks at that time; shoot, 70 bucks? Why not? There was a huge shipment at at a local gun dealer and the sale lasted for quite a while; long enough for me to get talked into buying one (wasn't going to during that "quite a while" sale time, because of negative comments about them), and it's got to be one of the best gun buys I've ever gotten. My particular C9 has been completely reliable with FMJs, and the Speer Gold Dot personal defense stuff. It's ugly, heavy, very accurate and fits my hand quite well. I have no reason whatsoever to trade it on something else, though in the future, I may just purchase a Glock 19. Another reason I really like my C9 is that if I ever lose it, I'm not out for much. I don't think anything really bad can happen to it while I have it, because it's built like a tank (point certainly made in the video). One thing those awful videos did show me, is that I have a great little "9" that cost me little of nothing. Say what you might, I have nothing bad to say about the C9. With all this just being typed out here, I don't believe I'd pay 150 bucks for one now, though, as I'd just wait until I could purchase a Glock 19. I'll also keep my C9, just because, and from what I understand, the Hi-Point guarantee is about as good as it gets, too. After having that handgun for near ten years now, I've never had to try out that customer service yet.
