I had the honor of shooting a few rounds from my fil's .557 Nitro Purdy double rifle once, I agree. I didn't know T-Rex still roamed the earth.

Come out West, and get between a Moose and her calf.

You'll be wishing one of two things:
1. You had that Purdy.
Or:
2. The T-Rex was chasing you, rather than the Moose.

(And we have the "smallest" subspecies in North America: the Shiras Moose.)

Well, the entire purpose of a round like that is to provide that last bit of defense against a very large, very angry animal that wants to smash you into a fine slurry.

Granted, the .700 was developed as a "vanity" round in that someone decided it would be neat to have the biggest and the baddest, but the concept is still there.

Ross Seyfried (sp?) said that he developed the .585 Nyati, an EXTREMELY potent round for bolt action rifles (some loads churn up something like 10,000 ft. lbs of energy) after he almost became a foot rest for a very ****** off elephant.

He had a .450, one of the traditional rounds for hunting dangerous game, but he said that it really didn't feel like he had much of anything when jumbo was trying to squish him.

pretty much off topic, but Ross Seyfried rocks. :D

He's probably one of the only "authorities" that I will believe almost without question. If it has to do with African game, big rifles and big handguns shooting hard cast bullets... he's done it. Heck, he probably PIONEERED it.
A no BS kind of guy. Used to win combat pistol matches with a straight stock 1911, against others with their "race guns".

I'd like to shoot the Nyati... once. Only once.

It can hurt

I'm a stocky guy and shoot alot of 7mm and shot rounds, but my uncle passed and left me a marlin lever action 45/70. I loaded the first few rounds thinking nothing of it and then, BOOM! I had no idea that rifle had that much power and after a few more shots put it down for another day when I could take the scope off for another go. I love the rifle, but I only take about 10 shots when I bring it to the range. It's cool, but why use a large round that is not as accurate as a smaller round that is not as abusive!

A Carcano?,,, Really,,,,,

I think the hardest thing recoilwise that I have shot was a italian Carcano from WWII.

Wow,,,
I wouldn't have guessed that.

I had one of those rifles back in the 60's,,,
I got it from Alden's Mail Order catalog for (IIRC) $12.95

That rifle kicked way less than a British .303 or an 8mm German Mauser.

As Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,,,
Felt recoil is in the shoulder of the trigger puller,,,
I'm not doubting you but I am a bit surprised at the statement.

My WW-II bring-back 8mm Mauser kicks like a mule,,,
But the only pain is in that %#$^% steel butt-stock piece.
