DA "Cheating" at the Range

May I first answer dvc comments.What else can one do if not practice on paper oand steel?You can't go out and pick gunfights so you can practice in real situations!!!
I shoot a sig 220.I shoot a lot of DA with it.I know how important the first round hit is so I train for it.At 20 yards I can consistantly hit a 8 inch plate first round with quite good speed.If that isn't good enough I really do not know what is.A DA first round is something that you must practice.If you are not willing to do this its too bad.You are missing out on a whole class of very fine firearms.
As for the statement about the sig 220 being a fine paper puncher,it is,but it allso a fine carry weapon.
Thats my say on this.If you will not put in the time and ammunition no weapon will be good enough.

We have a criminal jury system which is superior to any in the world;
and its efficiency is only marred by the difficulty of finding twelve men

Most cops I have seen do not take advantage of the training opportunities available to them. Most cops fire their gun only when told to do so by the department. That amounts to, what, a few times per year? IMO thats not enough, and, frankly, I'm not sure that they even qualify as 'trained' in the sense that we use here...that when put in a high-stress situation, proper technique is the dominant response.

It IS possible to achieve that level of response, but the only way to do it is via constant, dedicated practice. And even if most/all cops recieve superb training in the academy and in annual in-services, if they do not keep up with drilling it in, a lot of it is lost...
