pthfndr,
I've read most of the posts on this thread. I posted earlier on it. One thing I failed to mention, and I think everyone else here did too:
You initiated the first contact on this, by asking about his AR, he might have known of some legality issue, and thought you were possibly going for the X-ring. Maybe not.
While that doesn't make you the focal point on this, perhaps if you'd not mentioned it to him, he likely woudn't have approached you.. Just a thought.
I understand many of the feelings involved involving LEO, in general. I've had my "incidents" as well. Once in particular, the LEO lied on a report involving my step-son. I know, I was there during the whole darn thing. When I went to Court on his bahelf on that matter, the Judge (in chambers) told me it didn't matter, he has to back and suppoert his LEO, and he knows there are examples of likely wrongdoing on the LEO part. He further said, he wouldn't be so inclined to allow the officers statements, but he wasn't up on felony charges either, a simple misdemeanor. It wouldn't ruin him for life. I thanked him for his time, and watched the wheels of Justice roll.
OTOH, several times in my life, LEO have caught me doing stupid sh!t, and just let me go, after shooting the breeze awhile.
I also have a brother-in-law, former LEO, who would turn me over in a second if he even thought I was "dirty". I don't worry about him though, I don't need a lifetime membership to Club Fed.
The company I work for seems to encourage mamagement type harassing the grunts. There exists a quota system, whereby a management type is expected to "write-up" a minimum number of workers a month. If he doesn't, it's considered he isn't doing his job properly.
Needless to say, a guy gets written up a time or two, and your job is in jeopardy. He either finds another job, or "shapes up". That's fine and dandy, but what happens if the workers get the message, and adheres to every rule. The "officers" are having a hard time finding workers in violation, so they start faking writeups to satisfy the company quota requirement. What you have now are lies, and harassment.
BTW, this has happened already, and proven. There are lawsuits pending against the company, yet the crap continues.
No incentive to stop the practices of intimidation for personal gain of the officers.
This policy was born at the top of the chain of command, and will end there as well. Something terribly similar to what we're possibly discussing here.

History shows that all conquerers who have allowed their subjected people to carry arms have prepared their own fall.
