Cost of a license??!

Just went through the process to obtain a pistol permit here in Connecticut for the first time. Not sure how we compare to other states, but i did the math this morning. When all is said and done, it will cost nearly $500 in fees and certification...just for the piece of paper!

How about other states? I can't imagine it is this costly everywhere. And I also can't help but think that the high cost is excluding many people from carrying (legally, anyway)...especially in this economy. Or is there some sort of unspoken socio-economic division amongst the masses, that this extravagant fee structure is supporting? I don't usually think along these lines, but one can't help but wonder. If it's our right as Americans...then why isnt it made feasible for all?

Here in SC it is $60.00 for two days of classes & $50.00 for the licence itself for a total of $110.00. I guess we get a bargain down here.

Is this a permit just to purchase a pistol? We don't have those in Arkansas, so it would be nearly $500 cheaper here. If it's a CCL, that's a different story.

Edited to add: If I remember correctly, the CCL in AR is about $150, including the fee, fingerprinting, etc. I don't think that includes the class, though.

Is that for a concealed carry license?

Or simply a permit to own a firearm?

I'm not sure exactly what "pistol permit" means in your state.

In Oklahoma we only need a permit to concealed carry,,,
There is no permit process to purchase handguns,,,
The Concealed Weapon License (CWL) costs.

For my CWL,,,
$60.00 for the class,,,
$10.00 for the passport pictures,,,
$25.00 to the county sheriff for fingerprint fees,,,
$100.00 to the Ok State Bureau of Investigation for a 5 year CWL.

I could have paid $200.00 to the OSBI and obtained a 10 year CWL.

Totals out to $195.00,,,
Not too bad at all.

In Oklahoma

Cost of class Is from $40 - $60 ( $60 is max you can be charged by law )
Passport photo no more than $10
Fingerprints $25
License fee $100 for 5 years and $200 for 10 years

Do not have to have permission from the state to buy guns. Just to carry them.

Kinggabby was correct,,,

I knew mine cost me $195 bucks,,,
I misremembered the price of the class and fingerprint fees.

I corrected my original post.

In Georgia I believe the cost is $77.25 and there are no training classes required. The breakdown is $67.25 for the Probate Court and $10.00 for fingerprinting.

I've had my PA permit for years, and I don't recall any costly pics or fingerprinting, just the fee for the permit and an auto-renewal. Couldn't have been more than $50 total.

Yeah some of you in other states have cheaper cost. But in some of those states I am sure that your gun laws are just a little bit more strict than Oklahoma.

Here in my county in Alabama it's show your drivers license, 10 minutes of paperwork, $20 and out the door with your carry permit.

Jim

There is no permit needed to buy a pistol in Missouri. My CCW class cost me $50 and then had to pay the sheriff's office $100 for fingerprinting and background check.

The most expensive part is buying pistols... the damn things just keep needing homes.

The Connecticut Pistol Permit is required to carry a firearm (rifles excluded, I believe). Oh, and in Connecticut, if you don't show your valid Pistol Permit...you can't even hold a gun in a gunshop, never mind buy one!

Our quite expensive breakdown is as follows:
$225 for a one day class (there might be cheaper classes, but I think this might be pretty typical)
$20 for fingerprinting
$50 fee to state police for background check
$20 fee to state police (...for more background checking??!)
$70 fee to local authorities
(this will get you a temp permit. To get the official....you've got one more fee)
$70 fee to state police

Total = $455

(not quite $500, but pretty darn close!)

Indiana here:

Indiana started the lifetime CWP handgun license in July 2006.
My four year CWP handgun license expired in April of 2006 so I decided to let it expire rather than wait 3-1/2 years to get the lifetime.
In July 2006 I applied for and in August 2006 I received my lifetime CWP handgun license and the the cost was $125.00 if you had NO permit.
The cost to RENEW a valid CWP handgun license to the lifetime CWP was $75.00, but you couldn't apply sooner than 180 days (if I remember correctly) before your valid license expired.

Come to Indiana & bring your guns n toys,,,,,,we have cookies.

The high cost is designed to make it more difficult for non-PLU to keep and bear arms. PLU is "people like us."

The right to keep and bear arms makes the self-appointed "better people" nervous. If they could rescind or repeal the Second Amendment, they'd have done it a long time ago. Since they can't, they make it as difficult and expensive as possible for the commoners to exercise a right. Naturally, they'd be twelve and a half miles past horrified, incensed, outaged, and downright disappointed were anyone to propose background checks, finger-printing, required classes, training, and police permission for buying books and magazines, signing up for internet connections, having children, getting abortions, voting, et cetera: those are rights our self-appointed moral and intellectual betters approve of. Clear?

Here in Colorado, there's no fee to buy a gun, and it can be carried openly anywhere outside Denver, Telluride, and I believe Boulder. Carrying a gun concealed involves taking a mandatory "training" class, (contents and range time not specified,) that typically costs $100–$150. plus a sheriff's department fee of about $150, plus state fees of about $25.

In Vermont, Alaska, Arizona, and Wyoming, you can carry as you please without a permit.

All that said™, I'm glad you're carrying. May you always have a gun near to hand, and may you never need it.

I have several permits and the fees range from a low of $20 to a high of $100. Some required prints, another didn't and even another required blood/DNA (ok, kidding about that one). Class was a couple of hundred but was good for all permits.

I hate to say this but it really does boil down to economics. Sometimes it does appear that the State governments are indirectly trying to prevent poor folks from carrying. :(

As Jim stated above, it is very reasonable in Alabama. I am not sure but the cost may vary slightly from county to county since it is issued by the county sheriff. It is $25 in my county, but it went down to $20 when I turned 65.

You have to renew and pay the fee each year.

75.00 for class(varies guy I went to had couple pricing for an even better deal)
10.00 for fingerprints (local price and on a digital AFIS scanner no less)
10.00 notary for paperwork.(free if you know somebody)
10.00 for passport photos(2)
100.00 for permit (4 year) or 50.00 for (2 year)

8.00 optional for a nice flat document box and postage to mail it. I'm sure the folks who have the mile high stack of permit applications appreciate the ap pack not being bent, folded, or damaged in an envelope.
