Convincing

Hey everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone had any tricks on how to convince your wife to let me have a handgun in the house. She says it's not safe-.- the whole point I thought was for safety but she thinks otherwise and has no care for discussion. Am I fighting a lost battle??

Funny you bring up not shooting her that's one thing she is scared of. She said the news tells bad stories about guns in people's homes. I'll have to take her to a safety course so she can see

Having a gun in the house for personal protection and family defense is very practical and logical, so naturally you need to go about explaining it a completely different way. i suggest a pink gun with lots of external safeties. this is how my girlfriend came around.

My wife has no issues with you owning a gun, she doesn't know you. :)

As for you convincing your wife, taking her shooting and getting her to realize that it can be a couple activity is a good step.

I must admit I kind of  at the let me attitude. My wife is my wife, not my mother.

My wife says it's fine if you have a handgun in the house but she wonders why you need her permission?

:D:D:D:D

Your making me chuckle. Yes I meant my wife not yours. But I'm gla I have permission from someone else. At least of I stand up to her she won't be able to shoot me with a gun :):):)

I got robbed at gunpoint. That is how I convinced my wife to let me get some guns and a CCW permit. Now getting my wife to carry a gun that is difficult battle.

Use scare tactics about what happens to people when intruders come in and the homeowner is not armed or prepared.

Have a riot.

We were living in L. A. Shortly after the Rodney King riot, my wife says, "we should have a gun in the house."

All you need to do is figure out a way to make that happen.

Put it in your truck. She can't say anything then. After she becomes "ok" with that, then walk the pistol into the house like a new puppy. She'll get over it or over you....

Or tell her that you're becoming a "doomsday prepper"

It depends. Some people have a tendency to refuse to be reasoned with. There isn't much you can do if your wife is the type that makes a conscious effort not to listen. If she is a reasonable person, then there are some compromises you can make. The first thing to do is demonstrate how safe modern handguns are. One way would be to take something with a safety/decocker and key lock. Hand it to her at a range along with some ammo. Then, while making sure she follows the safety rules, get her to try to load and fire the gun. I did this with a friend's mother once. After nearly ten minutes of just trying to figure out how to make the gun shoot, I asked how safe she thought the gun was. She shouted, "Not safe at all! How can anybody defend themselves with this?!"

That was the turning point. It isn't hard to show that guns are as safe as you could ever want them to be. The question is which gun or which mechanisms will provide her with the comfort she wants. Give her that much, and you learn to shoot whatever that is.

Thanks for the advice maybe I'll try a few of these out. Worst thing that could happen is she still says no.

Be persistant. Show how serious you are and be patient - don't push too hard for it all at once.

In the meantime, buy a gun, keep it at the range and train with it. Be ready for the day she says that she's cool with it in the home.

Then buy ten more guns.

Good luck. It took me almost 30 years to convince my wife to become proficient.

The only reason I got guns in the house, including pistols, was that I had them and they came with me.

PS I think she wants my AR. I was doing a familarization with her. She went through 15 rounds before I could stop her to continue the instruction.
