conceal carry a 4 inch??

Good suggestions abound in this thread. Remember that most folks are so bound up in their daily concerns and routines that they wouldn't notice if you were wearing Ronald McDonald clown shoes. A decent holster/belt combo, covered by a garment will get you by quite easily. I carried a 4" model 10 as a young copper for years until I could afford a j frame.

Until the last month or two, I carried a 10mm full-size, all-steel 1911, during all my waking hours, in a homemade under-the-shirt vertical shoulder holster. Concealment and comfort were both near-perfect. Then, after a close, eye-to-eye encounter with a mama black bear and her two cubs, I bought a S&W69 (.44mag 5-shot 4-1/4" L-Frame). I was surprised, and delighted, that I could conceal-carry it in a similar holster, just as well as the 1911. And it continues to work well, even after I replaced the stock grip with the slightly larger "500" grip (the stock grip for the S&W500 X-Frame).

[Addendum]
I should add that there is one thing about my carry method that might be a "show-stopper" for many (maybe most(?)) people: disguising the slight bulge (due to the grip butt) just at the outside edge of my left shirt pocket requires that I carry a lot of stuff in that pocket. For me, that is a "zero-cost" item, because I carried all that stuff in that pocket long before I started carrying in an under-the-shirt shoulder holster.

Sounds like you finally found the right gun forum

What ever that other forum is it is clear that they have little experience with CC. What you are planning to CC is puny compared to what I carry on occasion. As the others have stated you need the right holsters for IWB and OWB and from there you have to dress correctly. With the right holster I CC my Automag IWB or even my Walker during the summer months.

Skeeter Skelton was initially quite enamored of the 2.5" S&W M-19, then he realized a 4" was no harder to conceal and easier to shoot.

I use an old (late 80s early 90s) era Bianchi model 7 Shadow (pancake style) for my 4" S&W model 10-8. It works very well depending on the clothing I wear. I find that the clothing is almost as important as the holster when concealing a carry gun. In the last two weeks I have gone back to the begining (as far as my choice in guns go). I use a 1979 vintage Bianchi model 5BH when I carry my 6" Colt Python. The cover garment is usually a 5.11 vest or a winter style jacket. My brother knows I carry and what to look for and even he couldn't tell I was carrying the big 6" Python when I visited him a few days ago.

picked up my ccwp yesterday, took my service six out in a suncraft molded nylon pancake holster i got on gun broker. it rode good in it but i know i need a better one for the long haul. i just can't see it lasting a very long time. but thanks to ya'll i gave it a shot and now i know it can be done. a new gun ain't cheap and its good to know my old service six is as good as a new gun and maybe better. i wonder how comfortable this gun would be iwb holster? thanks

but instead of getting answers i asked for on some forums i get this.( get rid of your current gun, it's too big to conceal, trade it to a smaller gun or sell it and buy one.

What a crock of bovine droppings. Use what you like and pay no attention to others that can not provide constructive suggestions.

I am basically a semi-auto person now a days and carry a 45 ACP compact 3.6 inch pistol, but have had in the past carried a S&W model 27 3.5 inch 357 mag in an upside down shoulder holster that was extremely comfortable and easy to conceal under a coat.

Today I prefer to wear a gun on my belt at 3:00 o'clock and find no problem doing so.

Good luck and shoot straight.

sure

A lot will depend on your physical size, dress style and a bit on climate. Holster type will matter.

Back in the day, it was not uncommon to unscrew the big "target" grips, and replace with the smaller "service" grip, for off duty or concealed carry, I did it pretty regularly with a 4" M66.

Later I bought an early 4" Security Six with a service grip, as a spare, and carried it routinely concealed and quit doing the grip shuffle. These days I occasionally carry a 4" M28.

A 2X2 pouch carried 6 extra rounds. Sometime I put a speed loader in a jacket pocket.

All of this was done with a double thickness leather belt that fit the slots on a Bianchi #8 pancake style holster. I can just get away with it in warm weather using an untucked "river shirt/fishing shirt". A vest, sport coat, or leather aviator jacket works better in cooler weather.

I carried a S&W 686, .357 magnum, 4" barrel a few times. I used a shoulder holster, a belt pack, and a belly band on various occasions. None of these I consider a 'Quick access solution'. They simply allowed me to have a handgun with me that was concealed.

I have a Ruger Police Service Six 4 inch. I have carried this revolver with a IWB Blackhawk holster. I wear a sport coat or a shirt that will conceal the revolver. It is heavy but can be done.
Good luck

i have a chance to get a choice of an iwb holster at a good deal, one is nylon the other leather. the leather one has a steel clip and is $8 more than the nylon which uses leather straps connected with chicago screws. which would be the better one? thanks

I prefer a J frame for cc, but if I only had a 4" K OR L frame it wouldn't be a problem with the right holsters. I have carried a 4" L frame with shirt over a pancake holster.

old fart ... 'Better' is a personal opinion. I have both leather and nylon. Both work for me. The nylon is my choice if the weather/environment is wet, otherwise the leather gets the nod.
