CMP 1911s ...1/3 of the way there

I've seen so many people complain about these old war guns and being rattling. Guys lets face it, you want a tight 1911, go by a Dan Wesson, Ed Brown, Nighthawk, etc. etc.. For me I'll take that old war gun and wouldn't hesitate to carry it, after I tested it of course. My grandfather still carries his Remington-Rand 1911 daily. I think he bought it in the late 40's-early 50's. Main thing I know about the gun is I've shot a bunch of rounds through it and he probably could fill a tractor trailer with the rounds he shot out of it.

Heck, I've got a stock SR1911 and a stock Delta Elite and the Remington Rand beats them both. The Front blade is so small and the notch so tight, it forces you to aim small.

I appreciate the CMP and agree that $730 for a service grade is still a good deal. But the fact remains that they get their stock for free (ammo and accessories included) and the price just keeps climbing g on everything. I guarentee everything is more expensive on January 1st. And while I appreciate their mission to promote marksmanship, I guess I fail to see how they do that for those who don't live near one of their stores. I hear about their great ranges and mobile air rifle range, but I don't get to enjoy them in Pennsylnvania.

And I guess I fail to see how in raising the price every year on guns and ammo promotes marksmanship. I buy 2 loose cans of HXP every year at Christmas, but I only shoot 1 can. It's 120 bucks shipped per can. That's 60 cents a round. Yeah, it's cheaper than most 30-06, but it's still expensive and it's 50 year old ammo that they got for free. Seems to me they don't have to raise the price EVERY year.

But I love the Garand and will always keep mine. Just not cheap to feed it, CMP or not.

Picked up 3 garands from camp, 2 service grades and 1 special grade. I consider the service grades to be very good buys at what I paid (695, 730). The special was an ok deal, still on the fence about it. I may be wrong, but I thought the last price increase was a net $0 increase if you were shipping? It used to be $695 plus $30 shipping and I thought they went up to $730 w free shipping. The only impact was to those buying at the store... Maybe I'm misremembering.

I guess I fail to see how they do that for those who don't live near one of their stores.

The conduct other matches, OK, MN, Eastern and Western games

PLUS

They train Master Instructors who conduct clinics and matches all over the country.

Plus they sanction EIC and other Service rifle matches throughout the country.

I conduct there a summer in this little town and there are several more through out the state

Their web site list Upcoming Matches and Clinics.

The must be doing something because CMP GSM games are reported to be the fastes growing shooting sports in the country.

The CMP's rifles, except new commercial .22s and air rifles, are free other than the cost of inspection, storage and preparation for sale. Bayonets, 1911 magazines, rifle cleaning kits, and parts scavenged from rifles are probably also free, but the other items the CMP sells are not. The CMP's current supply of ammunition was not free; the days of free US-surplus ammo are long gone. The CMP sells commercial ammo, except for Greek HXP .30-06, which was purchased from Greece.

I live 30 minutes from a local CMP affiliated rifle club that shoots weekly matches on a schedule posted by CMP each Summer. There is a master instructor who gave a clinic I attended. The club has carbines for ANY shooter to borrow for a match. In my experience youth are not charged for ammunition. One of the experienced shooters will put up their rifles and coach a new shooter through the match.

How much of that has to do with CMP and how much with the local club? Not sure, but there wouldn't be a club if there was no CMP and there certainly wouldn't be carbines to loan.

The president is expected to veto the NDAA on Monday.

A compromise regarding the Guantanamo Bay detention camp is what is likely to secure the president's signature.

I received an e-mail blast from the CMP today. The National Defense Appropriations Act has been vetoed. CMP says they have no further information, so stay tuned to see if the veto will be overridden.

You know, I wish there was a way to sell off those surplus 1911' s and have the sale proceeds go directly to the Wounded Warrior Project and other veterans support groups. Most of the Vietnam-era veterans are retired or retiring. I'm one of the last of the Vietnam-era vets, but I have a ways to go yet! These milsurp guns should be liquidated and the proceeds should go where they can do the most good. This is a political p!$$!ng contest all snarled up in bureaucratic red tape!

The revised NDAA was approved for a vote on Wednesday by the House and Senate Armed Services Committees.

A vote will likely happen on Thursday or Friday of this week. It's not that radically different from the original, so if the president decides to stick to his logic, this one will be vetoed as well.

The CMP provision for transferring the 1911s is still in the bill.

Perhaps even HE will see the folly of delaying the NDAA, under current circumstances. He DID authorize more "special" troops into the sandbox, as long as nobody calls it "Boots on the Ground". Maybe he'll let the CMP provision slide as long as nobody calls it "Allowing guns on the streets".

The president says he will sign (the veto proof) bill.

The 1911 CMP sales are still in the Bill. Once signed, the CMP has to up pack the crates, have the pistols inspected by armors, come up with a plan for sales and pricing.

The Defense bill authorizes 10,000 pistols a year to be sold.

Its pretty much a waiting game. The CMP already has the pistols, I saw the crates when I was at the Advanced Maint. Clinic in Aug.

I believe CMP saw this coming. They started a As Issued 1911 match a couple years ago and have been selling new USGI M1911 Mags. I got 10 (the limit).

My hopes is they also will sell surplus Hardball, but I haven't heard anything about that.

I got one, but wife bought me a new gun safe so I have room for another.
