Church carry and spouse

Do you and your spouse have a difference of opinion when it comes to carrying in a Church? While I think there is nothing wrong with having my weapon concealed on me during service my wife thinks it is wrong. She seems to think it is ok to protect yourself while at home or anywhere else other than Church.

Touchy subject. I would like to know if off duty Law Enforcement carry's in church? Other than that I would think this issue hinges on personal choice. Some States C/C Laws have restrictions to do so. Traveling in another State other than where the permit/license was issued and wanting to C/C into a Church. I would be careful about doing so. Unless you check first:

1. to see if your C/C permit is valid in that State your traveling in.

2. And if State Law allows for this type of venue >no matter where one is.<

3. If in home town and allowed to do so under State Law. I would still ask my Minister, Priest, or Rabbi for their permission first before doing. SSMcG

I see no reason as to why the church is different from the coffee house or the boardwalk or the mall or the park. Many shootings happen in places of worship.

As a pastor, it is my feeling that if there is a difference: it is in the perception by the bad guys that the church would be more of a pushover place than Starbucks, McDonalds, or the local 7-11.

That is THE reason I took my elders to the back room, . . . and while I did not TELL them to carry at church, . . . I gave them personal 100% permission to do so any time they desired to.

Ironically, . . . within a few minutes of my meeting, . . . in Columbus, Ohio, . . . a church was robbed by 2 guys and a gal, . . . one had a gun. That is just 40 miles down the road from us.

NO PLACE is immune, . . . and to think it is so, . . . bespeaks of the "ostrich syndrome".

And in answer to the OP question: my wife is a bit uneasy when I carry to the church, . . . but she understands the logic. I do not carry when I am officiating as pastor, . . . only on my "work days" there.

May God bless,
Dwight

In Georgia you cannot carry in a Church buildings or in parking lots, but I believe that is being challenged in court right now. As a matter of fact I believe it was a Pastor who actually brought the law suit against the State, but I could be mistaken. At the end of the day I believe each Church should be allowed to set their own guidelines for their facilities.

My wife doesn't care where I carry. Walking out of the movie theater LATE Friday night we discussed how it was a good idea to carry 24/7. She fully agreed.

Walking through church doors does not necessarily protect you from all of the PHSYICAL harm that evildoers may want to inflict.

Actually, regarding church carry in GA there's a definite gray area written into SB308 that was signed into law summer of 2010. It says to approach the management or supervision and advise them of the presence of your weapon and to FOLLOW THEIR DIRECTIONS EXPLICITLY as to the removing, surrendering, storing OR SECURING of the weapon. Technically, that means to secure it wherever you have it. Hopefully on Tomorrow morning that restriction is going to be stricken in committee mtg @ 8. There's more info regarding that over on Georgiapacking.org.
*EDIT* Carry in church parking lots was made legal with SB308. I'm sure of that.
In that court case that BarryLee mentioned the state won because the judge ruled that the gray area I mentioned already granted church carry with permission from the church. He felt no need to strike down that whole section. Also mentioned in carrying with permission are courthouses. Uh...no thank you, many police already don't know a lot about carry. I'm not trying to walk into a courthouse with my gun....no sir.

church carry... or any conceal carry...

My wife has differing thought on conceal carry than I do.

So, it boils down to... if she doesn't know... she doesn't need to know.

Don't make it a point to let her know.

Don't put it on in front of her.
Don't go out of your way to point out you are carrying.
Don't let her know... out of mind - out of sight and therefore not an issue.

The church that I attend has a uniformed police officer present during all services. The way I look at it, if the head pastor thinks that its prudent to have an armed cop present, then its probably prudent for me to be armed just like I would in any other place as well. Just to be clear, there have been no incidents that I know of during my church's services and I've seen the cop directing traffic after the service more than anything, but it still gives one some food for thought.

Nope, we don't go to church. We don't practice any religion for that matter. Plus she doesn't have any interest in getting a CCW permit for herself. I will keep trying to convince her though...

She has no qualms about where I carry though, she did at first.

Dear Dwight, that is my pastor's take on this issue as well. We also have an 8th degree black belt instructor who is also in the Karate hall of fame. He carries as well interestingly. He is 65 and still strong as an ox and a marine with combat time in Viet Nam. In our very small church, we have about 5 that carry, one is a retired LAPD transplanted to Idaho. No problem with CCW in church up in Idaho. Don't try to rob this place, you will have at least five guns pointed your way. I would follow the lead of the retired LAPD and the black belt, but I would certainly be there for back up.

God bless and keep preaching the WORD.

GA church carry update

SB98 has been amended in committee to remove govt buildings and bars from restricted carry locations, but dang it, it appears that clarification re:church carry was not! Therefore, the gray area in SB308 remains. That's just great...I'm never in bars and rarely in govt bldgs.
Oh well, GeorgiaCarry has still gained/taken much ground vs. where we were a few yrs ago.

[QUOTEjreXD9][/QUOTE] Been watching your post waiting for the outcome. Sorry to hear about your disappointment in Georgia. Concerning your SB98 C/C Law in regards to: Religious Structures. SSMcG

My wife has no problem with it. My pastor is aware, and has no problem with it either. Since were are a progressive church and often make decisions many radical fundamentalists disagree with (we have received threats) he is happy we do it.

The bible says thou shalt not murder; taking another life in your own self-defense is permitted.
