Notice how easily one crazy subject can manipulate and cripple the law enforcement activity in an entire region of the country. LAPD and many other agencies in the Southwest are suspending many day to day law enforcement activities due to the the manhunt.

And notice how quickly (understandably, in this case) law enforcement recedes into self-protection mode due to the actions of a single perpetrator.

Now imagine that, due to natural or unnatural emergencies, the unrest was widespread and imagine the complete absence of police protection that would immediately ensue. This is not a reflection on LE whatsoever, but an acknowledgement of the inherent limitations and folly of relying on police agencies for protection during truly exigent circumstances.

Yet, there is no reason why a citizen might need 30 round ammunition magazines. :rolleyes:

Our sense of security is based on a historical relative normalcy that is far more fragile and fleeting than we realize, despite many moments of clarity that should inform us otherwise (Rodney King, Katrina, 9/11, Pearl Harbor for God's sake).

I don't know if this is "Law & Civil Rights" material, but if not I hope the moderators move this thread as this is an interesting story I would like to follow.

If you own a truck in that area I wouldn't drive it! Apparently the police have a hard time distinguishing between Hispanic old ladies and the 200lb+ African-American former cop.. They have opened fire on two vehicles whose paint nor occupants did not even remotely resembled the suspect. I drove through the heart of the "manhunt" yesterday - Corona to Irvine - and the amount of LEO activity was incredible. I have been driving around down here for about 40 years and this was so far beyond anything I have ever witnessed. If they think he is in the mountains they are crazy. It is snowing here and I'm only at 4,000 feet. He is down the mountain back in the zone. Waiting for the other shoe(s) to drop. LEOs shoot first and think second. Blue Toyota with two ladies and gray Nissan with big dude? I'm sure there must be a couple few decent LEOs down here, but the rank and file is rank. BTW, this truck shooting is exhibit "A" of the dismal LEO hit/miss rate.
 
I disagree on the inappropriateness of this subject matter for LCR. It is appropriate for LCR because it goes directly to the reason for the amendment in the first place. It is specifically related to the need for the civil right to self-defense and defense of community with sufficient firepower.

As often as the rhetorical question is ask, 'why would anyone need an assault rifle' or a 'thirty round clip', well, here is an example that points to the impossibility of LE protecting the citizenry when the need is the greatest. Again, that is NO reflection whatsoever on the brave souls in LE.

Not in my experience. Nearly 30 years ago, while driving to a night class at a university, I was pulled over by the police, and soon had 3-4 vehicles surrounding me. I was driving a red and black Dodge (Mistusbishi) Ram mini-pickup.

A police officer had been shot the previous week by a suspect described as 6-feet to 6-feet 3-inches tall with red hair driving a full size red pickup. So, they were stopping every pickup that was red no matter what the make or size.

BTW - at that time, I was 5-feet 10-inches tall with dark brown hair and beard - and they still ran my license and registration to see if there was any possibility I was the person or wanted. The whole affair took nearly 45 minutes before they released me to proceed on my way.
 
I'm somewhat amazed at the fear one person has generated within the LAPD. Maybe it's the way the TV reporters are hyping it, but they seem to be in panic mode out there. Makes you wonder if the fear is because the LAPD is made up of minimum skilled-politically correct-gender balanced personnel?....or is that just the TV reporters slant.

If you think he represents a good reason to have 30 rd magazines and a rifle they fit in, how would you phrase that argument to someone anti gun?
 
There is apparently no logical argument that would sway someone who is ideologically anti-gun.

Equalization of the disparity of force being the primary, if not the only function of the 2nd amendment, combined with the fact that that criminals will have any such weapons they desire ought to be enough.

But, as we know, logic, reason and the facts are not important to someone who has already decided the amendment is not worth insisting upon.
 
For one he is a left wing extremists. He is a big fan of Obama, Biden, and Anderson Cooper. In fact he sent a package with a letter dated december 8, 2012 to Anderson Cooper. Anderson Cooper claims the package only arrived a few days ago. That would be the slowest postal delivery since the 1800s. Someone had to have known about this package and the letter in it, long before the present killing spree.

Furthermore in his manifesto he argues for an assault weapons ban. He wants happy guns banned and standard capacity magazines done away with across the US.

Perhaps that is so his war will be easier to wage.

I bet that there are a few more recent shootings involving left wing extremists as well. These people are such true believers in their cause they are willing to ruin their own lives to ruin the lives of millions of american citizens who own guns.
 
Anderson Cooper and CNN have been caught in so many lies lately that their credibility is pretty much zero at this point.

BTW, didn't I read somewhere that this guy had anti-terrorist training?

Is someone pro gun succeptable to logic if wrong? I think i am logical and am pro gun. But you think it is impossible for someone to be anti gun and logical? Why cant they just be wrong in their logic?
 
With this amount of 'work factor' put on finding / stymying him, it's only a matter of time (and potentially unfortunately, lives). Look at the work factor placed on the DC sniper: Besides everyone being on the lookout, you had classified military flying assets enlisted... ultimately being spotted by an alert truck driver. It's just a matter of time.
