Christianity and Guns

Lou,

Its funny you should mention that. I wanted to write just such a book a few years ago. With the many different projects, and distractions since then, I never got around to it. Right now I am in the process of writing a book. In order to keep the cost down, I plan to condense it and use a soft cover and fund it from my own piggy bank so I can give it away to anyone who wants a copy. It is the result of questionare that I've been using the past few years. I've started a tape ministry which has been put on hold until I get this out of the way. Just spread a little thin right now. Thanks for the request. I take that as a very high compliment. If I see that there is enough demand, it may eventually get off of the ground.

Considering the length of this thread, the subject matter, and how many folks have joined it, I am very pleased how civil it has been. In the past I've noticed how very easy it is for people to get angry over differences. Just want to compliment all who have joined this discussion for "reasoning with them out of the Scripture..." Acts 17:2 instead of getting emmotional where it would serve no purpose. I think that most of us know that everyone brings their philosophical, religious, and spiritual beliefs into many seemingly unrelated topics. It is a good thing, I think, that we can express our views and learn from one another in this type of context. I don't know that we'd get this much firearms/self defense expertise in the specific Christian forums. Thank you very much DC and all of you moderators for allowing us this liberty. :)

"It is impossible to think with the emmotions. We are designed to think with our mentality rather than emotionality. Reasoning with the emmotions is like sawing a board with a hammer. It is not the appropriate tool designed for that job. Emmotions are intended to be a RESPONSE to the TRUTH in our soul." --EQ

"But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip; and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one." -Jesus Christ (Luke 22:36, see John 3:15-18)

While I disagree with what a lot of you think,
I would still defend your right to think it.
It comes as no surprise to me that you do
have those ideas.
After all,we are what we are because we have
been what we have been.
Surely nobody is surprised that the face of
Jesus appeared on a tortilla in Mexico?
Not in a chow mein in Shanghai,or a goat's
eye salad in Arabia.
As the Jamaicans say "Duppy know who to
frighten".
And your ideas are all your own?-yeah right.

This post is *slightly* off topic, but should cast a light that I have found amusing. Almost everyone I know, Christian or not, owns a gun here locally. The anti's are DEFINATELY in the minority. Most of the people at my church of 1200 own, and many of those shoot regularly. So- guns, self-defense, and Christianity aren't opposed to one another. This, which we take for granted here regionally, couldn't have been illustrated any better than when we took a little trip back in November. :)

I took a group of kids from our church (located in east Tennessee) to northern Indiana for a conference. We were the only "southern" church represented at this particular convention, but we weren't alone; the speaker was also from Tennessee.

Part-way through the convention, the speaker noted that he was in New York once, and had a CCW- so, "if you see a car with Tennessee tags, you can rest assured they own a gun, and they're packing- so don't hack them off." This was said half-jokingly, half-seriously. :)
An audible gasp was heard through the crowd... Several groups of kids turned to look at us (perhaps for confirmation or denial) and we just sat there, smiling and nodding, giving our affirmation; knowing a true kindred spirit was laying down the law up front. Our groups' pride flowed. but alas! There were plenty of confused looks from all the other groups. Needless to say, we got into all kinds of interesting discussions after the conference was over. :D

That said, self-defense in Scripture is a given. I'm surprised that nobody mentioned Nehemiah 4: 16-17 where they were rebuilding the wall with one hand, and a sword for self-defense in the other.

Ah! I was looking for that verse.

I congratulate the majority of posters in this thread for their civility.

For myself, I'm an agnostic, but if we take a belief system largely based on a body of work, it should be a fairly simple analytical exercise to see if any particular view is expressed therein. Since a significant part of the voters in this country claim this belief system, their beliefs impact me. Therefore, having a basis in their belief system serves a political benefit.

I regret the immaturity of the few. Just as I know that the ones standing on the streetcorner screaming that I'm going to hell do not by any means represent all Christians, please know that these few do not by any means represent all of us who have other belief systems, and accept my apologies for their behaviour. I would like to believe that we can all be joined in the purity of our intent, and the strength of our purpose.

Regards,

John
