Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants state handgun registry!

I'll say again, its about money

both proposals increase revenue.
increase ammunition taxes
create registry so that they can get more money.

i think first has some chance of passing. registry never.

on other note, lets stop bickering on this and GET A LAW IN FOR CONCEALED CARRY - NOW.

I don't think it's completely about money, I do think there is an underlying ideological battle going on. The city itself could have made money on gun sales, ammo sales, range fees, registration fees and all that a long time ago and they've chosen not to.

Emanuel's reasoning behind the proposal is very old and basic anti-gun rhetoric.

The idea of getting all the guns off the street, registering guns etc., so the crime rate will fall or so LE will have a better idea of where or how many illegal guns are around, is so outdated...and proven ineffective.

I'd have to be veeery leery of his true intention's.

He gets an F for his anti-gun originality.

No surprise here.

Rahm Emanuel is a savvy anti-gun politician. He was senior advisor to the president when congress was considering the "assault weapons" ban. He put pressure on congressmen to support the AWB. Emanuel and his boss enlisted three former presidents who made an appeal for the AWB: That put it over the top.

Gun owning citizens of IL should take this one very seriously.

Amen. Unfortunately, so many gun owners figure they can believe what the politicians say or the NRA will fight it for them, so they do not have to worry about it.

I can honestly say my politicians, local, state and federal, know how I feel about guns and gun rights. You do not even need to pay for the price of a postage stamp, just go to the politicians website and send them an e-mail.

When they get enough letters/e-mails, they might actually begin to consider the repercussions of voting against your rights.

Ok, not totally about money, there are other political agendas going on. But I don't seriously think that the reason is to register handguns. That as Canada has just proved it does not. They might think that end result will be less guns and hence less crime.

But the Mayor is smart and knows the statistics. Registering handguns does not and will not ever produce any major reduction in handgun homicides - what they all want.

The only way to do that is to get tough on criminals as New York did a while back when Giovannie was in charge. That is the way to do it.

I think you meant Giuliani.

Giovanni would be the normal spelling, if you meant somebody named Giovanni... But most of the Giovannis I know go by Johnny or Gianni.

lmao giovanni, thats absolutely hilarious. Why is it so difficult to get any positive gun rights in this state? Its absolutely ridiculous that we cannot retain our basic rights within the constitution and the state of illinois not wanting a piece of it...

Then, by all means, tell us what you've done to change the situation. Are you active in the ISRA? Have you been in touch with legislators? Have you supported any of the 2AF's litigation in your state?

yes, im active with the nra, and have written countless emails and made phone calls to representatives to halt these legislations from becoming law. Please dont call me out simply because we had one discourse that you didnt approve of.

For IL citizens, here is an additional way to express disapproval of the bills

It's the practice of "witness slips" Illinois allows electronic or "virtual" witness slips.

You have to go to the Illinois House of Representatives Witness Slips website:

http://witnessslips.ilga.gov/

So you go to the website, click hearings, choose Executive Committee, choose Wed, Feb 29th, choose 11:00 a.m. Capitol Building....

And you will see a list of bills.

There are four bills in Executive Committee that we should state opposition on: HB4149 = Private sale at FFL; HB4456 = Private sale at FFL; HB5167 = Ammo Tax; and HB5831 = Handgun registration.

Fill out the contact info on the slip, under "Firm/Business
Or Agency" I type: Myself

Under Section III. Position - check "opponent".

Under Section IV. Testimony - only check "Record of Appearance only".

Click on the button "Create Witness Slip"

Repeat this process for each of the four bills.

People from out-of-state can fill out electronic witness slips if they want, there is a field for other states in the address section.

Only select “Oral” if you plan to appear in person and provide oral testimony.
Only select “Written Statement Filed” if you plan to provide written testimony.

Please don't select the above options and then not show up to give testimony.

It was a simple question that I, and I'm sure other members, were curious to know.

And, I would highly recommend not airing out dirty laundry in public...

Here is the composition of the executive committee:

Chairperson : Daniel J. Burke D
Vice-Chairperson :Joseph M. Lyons D
Republican Spokesperson : Dan Brady R
Member: Edward J. Acevedo D
Member: Luis Arroyo D
Member: Maria Antonia Berrios D
Member: Mike Bost R
Member: Eddie Lee Jackson, Sr. D
Member: Robert Rita D
Member: Ed Sullivan, Jr. R
Member: Michael W. Tryon R

I think they'll make it out of committee since there are really only 4 members who could be considered pro-2A, and if you notice, Ed Acevedo is on the committee - as anti gun as they come.

Well, I also am going to defer getting either a Rohrbaugh R9 or Kahr PM9 and make campaign contributions with that money... but that's a way off.

Politicians that pursue this kind of backdoor political socialist agenda feel very uncomfortable with consistent push backs and media attention to the fact that they are trying to take away rights of Americans so they can dictate what they feel people should think, act and do.

The only course of action here is to keep consistent heavy unyielding political and media pressure on Emmanuel so he gets the message he's the one that's getting the blame for it.

It is also a very effective strategy to paint his efforts as anti American using accurate depictions of his methods-and to try and dry up his political fund raisers and his political power base all at the same time.

Don't think for a minute someone else will do this because that is what people like Emmanuel hope for a vacuum of oppisition to move into a conform to what he believes.

The famous old saying applies-

When good men do nothing ,evil grows strong.

Illinois State Rifle Association offers alternative to Chicago's proposed ammo tax:

http://www.prnewswire.com/news-rele...ve-plan-to-fund-trauma-centers-141054953.html

This makes great theater but basically the bill sends a message to Chicago from the rest of the state that the city is a money pit and the city should resolve it's own problems with its own resources.

The places that would be taxed under the ISRA are areas that don't have a tax base to speak of. There are hardly any businesses, and most of the people are on public assistance. Even if housing values weren't depressed nation-side, the home values in these gang-infested high-crime areas are horrible as you might imagine, not even taking into account the schools which are some of the worst in the nation.

A lot of state and federal subsidies and assistance/entitlement money fows into these areas, but tax money doesn't come out...

The proposal also highlights the underlying ideological differences that drive this debate:
