I voted OC spray as my backup but in actuality it's my first choice. My Commander is the backup if my initial assessment deems the spray would be ineffective for the situation.

I have never felt the need to carry a backup gun, in fact my usual carry gun is a S&W 640 in .38 special which is many peoples BUG. I went through most of my life without carrying or needing a gun as I have only been carrying a few years now. I know how to defend myself well enough without a firearm, so a 5 shot snub makes me feel plenty safe. I do carry extra rounds in the pocket though in a speed strip.

@Nocturnus31, You're right. My bad!

Thank You for pointing that out, sir. I'm not thinking that I'll be able to save the world or whatever by carrying a backup. I like and carry automatics, but a small snubnosed revolver or a pocket auto is so easy to carry, so why not?
My dream setup is to carry an XDM9 3.8 IWB, Ruger LCR .357 inside left ankle, and a Kel-Tec p3at in a back pocket (wallet holster). Carry three mags with the XD, one extra w/ the .380, and at least one speed strip for the revolver. I'm right-handed, so the XD will be on my strong side in a CrossBreed Qwik Clip tuckable, double mag pouch IWB on my left side to hold 2 - 13 rd. mags, then I'll switch up the other reloads accordingly. Not to mention me carrying a backup weapon or two is really no different from what a cop carries; i.e., oc spray tactical knife, duty weapon, spare mags (2), backup weapon, baton, flashlight, radio, and in most agencies, a taser.
Oops! I forgot to add: handcuffs, plus the vest, and a tape recorder!

I guess I carry a bunch of stuff around with me but it's all in a messenger bag that I leave in the car. On my person I usually have wallet and phone ID in my back pockets and my Airweight in the front. I'm one of those people that hates to lug a bunch of stuff around with me. I don't know how people can carry 2 guns, reloads, cell phone, knife, flash light and car keys.

OC spray is a good less than lethal alternative to your firearm but not as a back up.If the attacker isn't fazed by bullets,he/she won't be fazed by OC spray.As a last line of defense I'd rather have a second gun or a big,sharp knife.YMMV.tom.

I carry a Commander in .45 and a spare magazine. When I carry a backup gun it is a Kahr PM .45 and it replaces the spare magazine for the Commander. Most auto pistol failures are cause by a magazine, so my thinking is that I can transition guns as fast as changing magazines. The pocket gun is so nice during travel stops at strange gas stations and rest areas. It's very comforting to casually stick my hand in the pocket and get a full grip on "Bertha Boom Boom" if I get feeling sorta condition yellow.

I voted ".38/.357 revolver", but it fits the "snub nosed revolver" and "pocket pistol" catagories as well.

My primary is a .357 revolver, either a Colt Trooper or Ruger SP101. BUG is a S&W 342Ti. It is so light and easy to drop in the pocket, I kinda figure, why not carry it too. I also like having it accessable on the left side, as I doubt I could get to my primary if my right hand/arm were out of commission for whatever reason.

If I was in a high risk category, a backup would make sense. But I'm just a run-of-the-mill workin' stiff who doesn't draw much attention. It's inconvenient enough carrying one piece. No backup for me, thanks.

When the primary is a Full Size 1911 Colt then the back-up is a SP101 357 with 3 reloads for each stateside. When abroad a Sig 239 9mm and a Walther PPKS 380. 4 reloads for 239 and one for 380.

I carry a second magazine for failures, but not a second handgun. I can understand those who do, especially those who are in higher-risk professions, but I have a hard time figuring out where to put a BUG after filling up my pockets and belt with a primary IWB, spare mag, wallet, cell phone, a couple of sets of keys, and a comb and handkerchief. (Yes, I carry a handkerchief, and I use it a lot more often than I do my pistol.)
