Carry/concealment for swimming, other water activities?

The original poster has had 4 posts to date...this question especially with regard to the "pool" scenario smells like a troll to me...Gotta say BS to this one. Rod

That's right. I'm new to the forum. That's why I wrote:

I also didn't think going to a pool is such a weird scenario. Personally, I don't carry anywhere, but I know that a lot of people do, and I was simply curious about what they do in such a circumstance (which is why I clarified that I was asking to satisfy my own curiosity). There's been a lot of informative answers and discussion, and (until now) I didn't feel like it was an unwelcome question.

Now you've got me thinking...How much trouble could one get into, while fishing with a Tazer? No rod and reel, just two leads, some voltage and voi-la'!

Although I am not a big fan of swimming or the beach on those few occassions when SWMBO insists I go with her I take my Freedom Arms Mini revolver in a ziplock bag carried in the zippered key pocket in my swim trunks. Better than no gun at all and should be more effective than harsh language.

OK, I want berate him for being paranoid and thinkin he need a gun at the local pool. But there are such things as stupid questions and yes, I am judgmental and "profile" people. Only prudent to do so in life. As for the pool, don't go.

As for the canoe/kayak scenario........ On day trips I leave the guns at home. I've thought about buying a mouse gun to fit in the pockets of my cargo pants and a fanny pack isn't a bad idea. No need to protect the gun from water. Make sure it has some oil on it and go. A few hours of water won't hurt most guns, clean it when you get home.

For over night trips I usually have a handgun. We pack em away in the dry bags when boating and take em out at camp. Pack some cleaning supplies.

You want to believe Deliverance was based on real events go right ahead.

I carried a P3AT when I went rafting the New River, just clipped in my shorts with its clip. I went out of boat for about a half mile, floated some little class 1-2 in my PFD. I fired the gun as it was without touching it 4 days later. 3 failures to fire in the mag that was loaded in the gun, the chambered round fired. All rounds in the spare mag fired fine. I surmise that the spare mag dried out faster. Had I been more prepared I would have picked a round with primer and mouth sealant and I suspect all would have fired. My usual swimwear is a spyderco knife. Good enough to be of use, cheap enough I won't cry when it's lost, tight enough it won't open on my person when a wave dumps me.

We keep a marine ss 12 ga 870 in the boat. Swimming at the pool? I dont know of any gun that I could conceal on me when I went in for a dip. Now I will be looking and wondering if that person has a gun or ???

I never felt a need for a gun at a pool, well because i have one at my place here :) no public pools out in the country yet.....

Kayaking or canoeing why not a ss gun in a fanny pack? watrerproof of course.

Isnt there a glock can be shot underwater? Maybe one of those would be best?

Opinions are typically prefaced by such disclaimers as, "In my opinion..., IMO..., Personally I believe..., etc."

I'm sure the poster sees your point. BUT, I take everything I read here as a particular person's opinion. In fact (or opinion), it would save a lot of typing if persons would only preface their comments when they actually are stating facts. For example, "This is a fact, nobody needs to carry five handguns on his/her person for protection when at a swimming pool." If you disagree, just know that this is my opinion.

Regarding the crotch holster...
The one situation where NO ONE will argue against a manual safety.

Certainly better than a decocker.

In any case, although not an ideal solution, perhaps one could simply have a friend at the pool (perhaps this was already suggested), and alternate swimming and staying poolside with the weapon.

Well, like everything else, if I knew I needed a gun there I wouldn't go. At the ocean I will often stick my j frame in my nasty shoe, followed by my nasty sock. I don't wear shoes you'd want to steal and there is always someone sitting with our stuff.

Swampy weekend

This is a great subject because I just spent the weekend in a Florida swamp. Fishing, boating, kayaking, hiking, camping, etc. Saw snakes, lizards, snapping turtles, foxes, a HUGE owl, and about 100 vultures and eagles mauling some poor unrecognizable dead thing. I usually see deer and gators but not this time.

I had my usual carry piece, the NAA Black Widow .22 Mag/.22LR. All stainless steel with rubber grips makes for low maint in wet conditions. I duct-taped my little pocket holster to the outside of my shorts right at finger level for easy access. Snake shot in the first 2 chambers of the .22Mag cylinder, CCI Maxi-Mags in the other 3. The LR cylinder was full of CCI SGB.

No critters were damaged in the making of this weekend. I didn't shoot anything except a rotating squirrel target. The snake wasn't poisonous, the mama fox was with her babies, and I didn't feel like making turtle soup.

also, could you offer me some advice on what gun I should wear when I shower? And sometimes I like to go skydiving, anyone have any ideas on what I should bring there?

Honestly...I know some of you feel completely naked without your gun on you, but its ok to take it off now and then. If you absolutely cant take it off, don't go swimming...

Not sure why there is all the vitriol over a simple question. My wife and I often kayak. It took a while, but I finally found a Stohlquist PFD that has a molded firm (will not silhouette) accessory chest pouch. I had a kydex holster made just for it. I now have easy access to my glock even while buttoned up in my kayak. Paranoid? Last summer while on a calm stretch of river, I had the opportunity to see a very large black bear in its native habitat: where I am lower on the food chain  . The bear stayed well away from us. However, I did feel a lot better knowing that I could quickly get to my weapon if the situation arose.

Korbec, I hate to break it to you but a 9MM Glock will not be much defense against a bear that surprises you and launches at you to kill you. You may want to look into a .44 magnum revolver, or something along those lines. Revolvers offer very powerful rounds that can stop a bear attack quicker than some more underpowered pistol rounds. Not to mention that the reliability in a dirty and moist environment will probably be better than with a semi-auto pistol.

Depending on the size of these black bears, a large caliber rifle may be a better choice, but at the very minimum, please go with a large caliber revolver or you might find yourself in a pretty bad spot.

I cant fit my 300 win. mag in the pouch I described. I have some sweet loads worked up for it. Would be nice though. Also, my glock is not 9mm. I was trying to add something constructive to the thread. Ie: give the original poster an example of how someone can think outside the box for safely carrying a firearm and an example of why to carry it that way. That said, I am not going to get into the what size cannon would be best "if" argument..... :D
