Canadian Handgunners

Having watched the NRA infomercial on TV, and read some of the comments here regarding firearm ownership in 'foreign countries', I'm curious as to what our American friends actually *believe* to be the situation regarding handgun ownership in Canada?
Hint: It's not as bad as you may think...<g>
Regards,
Mike/BC

I couldn't guess, I live near detroit and have a CCW and I do know that by no circumstances am I allowed to carry my sidearm over for defense reasons, concealed or not.

If you don't get any replies for a while, please reply back, I'm really interested in what the facts are across the river.

Mike:
A question for you. I have read several articles in newspapers that say the new Canadian law is breaking down. The RCMP is quoted as saying they predict only 10% compliance with the registration and liscencing provisions. From what you see and hear what is going on?

the laws are very restrictive to use and transportation, you have to get an authorization to transport if you want to take in out of your home and there use is at a shooting range only( no self defence or hunting)

I was just up in Vancouver BC a couple of weeks ago. Everytime i was in a store with a magazine rack i looked to see what gun mags were available.

None.

Geee... ya think maybe there is a attempt to filter what is read by Canadians?

Not even ONE hunting magazine, much less a straight gun mag...

Vancouver also has a higher crime rate than Seattle. Seattle has CCW.

I really had a good time up in BC, as i do every time i go, and i must admit BC is a little more "awake" than the US in alot of ways, but, personal protection is clearly not one of them. When i am there i dont feel "free" at all. I feel like "the people" there only exsist and have what they have in order to facilitate benefits to the rich and royal.

The really sad thing is that the US is rapidly becoming smashed the exact same way, and the only thing that is slowing the smashing is the US Constitution and the people that protect it.

GOD BLESS THE 2nd AMENDMENT and the rest US Constitution!!

God bless FREEDOM and God bless THE PEOPLE!!

Reality ALWAYS takes precedence.

The Canucks have a board of RCMP censors that monitor literature coming into their country for harmful influences. Guns must be harmful, but what the hell, it is like torture anyway to show people what they can't have.

Hey up there in Canada...any you Mounties got a Colt Newservice or S&W big bore revolver frame. I'm trying to build a couple in .44 special caliber. Glad to help the crown... sorry...your government get rid of your nasty old guns.

I live in Toronto, and like guns a whole lot myself...dunno what it's like in BC, but i'm sure you can get gun magazines there. What the store sells has more to do with demand than anything...bookstores over here carry the usual Guns n Ammo and SOF and a whole whack of other publications.

Sure, it's too bad that we don't have a second amendment to allow for CCW. Then again, the number of criminal shooting deaths by handgun in Canada last year was in the double digits: less than 100. From what i understand there were more criminal shootings in New York (city, not state) alone...

I'm not positive on the numbers, so don't go all jumpy on me, but i'm fairly glad that i don't personally know anybody who's been shot. Almost all of my south of the border friends do.

Safe shooting for life

Hey, we're running out of guns down here trying to kill each other off. How about those Newservice's I requested. Send em, send em.

Jim

When I was in Toronto a while back all I saw on the news was how Asian gangs were pretty much running the place. Several years ago I had a Canadian from N.S. come down to work with us for about 12 weeks. I sold him 2 handguns while he was here. In order to take them back he had to write a request to the RCMP and wait about 6 weeks. He was then granted permission to bring them into Canada on a certain date at a certain border crossing in Maine. He arrived there a day early and had to spend the night because he could only take them across on the specified date. I think he finally made it back ok with them. God save the Queen!

Asian gangs still run the place...good call. They're not particularly well-armed though: either that or they don't use any of the stash, since there's been almost no news about them in months.

Sure, the guy made it back with the guns, but can he carry? I doubt it...kinda sad. Still, it seems like the odds of getting shot are in my favor in this city, with the laws the way they are. Tough call.

US citizens (nor any other citizen) are allowed to carry a handgun over the border into Canada, unless actually competing in a competition. I have a permit to carry my handgun over the border into the States. It does not stipulate *why* I am taking my handgun(s) to the States, however. What is important, is that I can bring it *back* into Canada. :-)
CCW is very, very limited in Canada. I know of no civilians that are CCW qualified. My brother is a detective and carries concealed, of course...but non-LEO's? No way.

Your information is quite correct..even if EVERYONE decided to register their (long) guns starting today, only about 10% would be registered by the Dec 31,2003 deadline..therefore 90% of Canada's gun owners would be instant criminals. Handguns have been registered for nearly 70 years here...it's the registration of rifles that is causing the backlog problem. I have also heard that the CFC (Canadian Firearms Centre) lost thousands of handgun registrations in the process of migrating the old files to the new system...I can't confirm that, but it really wouldn't surprise me. The irony of all this is that the CFC is one of the most pleasant government departments that I have ever had to deal with....
One or two of the political candidates who are running for the leadership of the opposition have vowed to scrap Bill C-68, the new gun control legislation...so we just have to wait and see. The important thing to remember here, is that it is now EASIER than it has ever been to purchase a handgun in Canada...and I'm not kidding.

Quite correct...however, they are not as rigid as they may seem. If I am going to shoot in a competition that is away from home, I can take my handgun with me either in my car, or as checked baggage on a plane, and keep it with me in my hotel room...all quite legal. As for self-defense..well...if I happened to be cleaning my gun when someone kicked in my front door, the baseball bat wouldn't be my first choice. I clean my guns a lot. :D

Most of the larger stores here, like supermarkets and drug stores, have not had gun magazines for a few years now. Yet if you look on the top rack, there's the usual filthy trash magazines...talk about selective morals!! :(
Vancouver has at least one murder a week..usually 'crime' related, but it's a murder nonetheless...and yes, personal protection is a concern to us.
I would never have dreamed of purchasing a handgun just two years ago...it was the threat of NEVER being allowed to own one that prompted me to act, when Bill C-68 became law...this law has had exactly the opposite effect..handgun ownership has quadrupled in Canada over the last 12 months.
Power to the people? Indeed.... ;)

Toronto: Do you have the large bookstore chain "Chapters" there? They stock dozens of gun mags on their shelves...kind of curious, as their clientel seems to be the liberal, granola-bar type.
You're right about the murder numbers...that's what is so infuriating about Bill C-68 and our new 'gun control' laws...I don't know anyone who has EVER been threatened with a gun, never mind shot with one. We simply did NOT have a problem..the anti-gunners fabricated the problem, using bogus stats.

Asian gangs are both the shooters and shootees here in Vancouver...and what are the chances that these guys are registering their guns? The latest murder occurred at a midnight booze-up behind a high school..a 17 year old Asian kid was stabbed to death...no guns involved.
I do not feel the need to carry a firearm when I'm (say) out walking the dog (yet..).

I have just purchased a S&W Model 27..it is factory nickel plate with a 5" factory barrel..big, nice looking gun, and is in very nice condition for a 25 year old revolver. I paid CAN$250 (about US$160)for it...we're not suffering TOO badly here.. :)
It shoots beautifully, with the recoil more akin to a .38 than a .357mag.
Anybody recommend a good load for this fine gun? (for target shooting, of course, this IS Canada....) ;)

Hello Mike,

I am a dual citizen (born in Canada and have us citizenship through my mother, who is a us citizen), living in VA with a conceal permit. I am considering moving to Canada in the next few years, and wonder about bringing my firearms to live on a farm. Any thoughts on this?
