Can a .22 be your main gun?

No.

A .22 will kill. There is no dispute in this fact. But with the advent of an ultra light .32 gun like the Kel Tec P32, why carry anything less? Gee whiz the P32 is less than 7 oz. empty.

If I have to go light weight, the P32 is my choice. It floats.

Everyday clothes and a Kahr MK9 fills my pocket.

My ultimate carry is the Glock G19.

The .22 is cheap, accurate, and fun, but there are better alternatives for self defense.

I carried a Ruger MK-II for a year after my divorce and I was poor!!!!! Nothing wrong with it. 10 rounds of .22LR is better than no rounds at all!!!

Great responses

Good question and good answers.

I grew up in the country and my uncle raised cattle. Every fall we would clobber several and pigs too.
He used a 22 rifle for the job. One shot between the eyes.

Being a squimish teenager back then I never wanted to be the shooter so I stood out of the way and watched. You can see more watching than you can shooting.

Talk about impressive. Those steers seemed to defy the laws of gravity they hit the ground so fast. Ditto for pigs. Kabang and down they went. My cousin and I once did a post mortem bullet recovery on one of the defunct bovines. No wonder they hit the ground like a ton of bricks. Uncle used solids and it was deformed but in one piece.

Having said that, I would not choose a 22 as my primary choice for the points listed if I could have only one firearm. Having said that....there are "times" I carry my Bobcat for SD. It's reliable and small and when I what to go mountainbiking in the neighborhood it's better than pepper spray or an edged weapon. (I carry those too)

Since I would be on the move on that bike I figure the BG will gave to want to catch up to me. That should be noticable to me, the intended victim. When he gets close enough, he gets a face full pepper spray or lead or both depending on the caliber of azzh%l& he is. I'd have to say one of the hammerless Taurus Smith clones would be a good choice too. Not much bigger but more KD power.

There are many better alternatives to a 22 as a first choice SD firearm. I go with a 45 in the car or just walking around.

JM2cents worth
