Let me throw a wrench in the spokes- A 15 year boy steals a car or knocks off a 7-11. Twenty years later he totally turns his life around, a good and contributing member of society. Why should he not be allowed to enjoy firearms like we all do? Best, J. Parker

That hypothetical 15 year old boy will not have a criminal record for a crime committed under the age of 18. Hell even after that they can requset youthfull offender status.

Hey Fast Eagle...GO NAVY

I am presently employed as a Police Chief. I have risen through the ranks from Patrolman to Chief at my agency, in the past 23 years. When I was a Sergeant I was sent to FBI LEO Firearms Instructor School. This was back in 1985 and since then I have trained hundreds of my fellow citizens, here in my city in the use of handguns for self defense. Our local County District Attorney has helped me with these seminars and he has a two hour segement, on the use of deadly force. We teach them how to safely store a gun in the home, how to choose a handgun, mental awareness and a each student gets about 4 hours range time. We present them with a certificate of attendance, suitable for framing. We are doing this for our citizens, because we do not want to have an unintentional discharge that takes a human life, especially a childs life. The antigunner seem to revel in the death of a child by gunfire. We also have the NRA Eddie Eagle Program in our Elementry/Middle Schools. This gun safety/firearms seminar along with Eddie Eagle is one of the cornerstones of our Community Policing Initative. We have had wide spread exposure in the media and it has all been very favorable to us.
As a Police Chief, I am not so vain as to imagine that when you are one of your loved ones, has a lethal encounter, that I or one of my Officers will be there to save you. When the SHTF is will be you and the felon, a cop will not be there to save you. Anybody that says differently, is depending entirely upon luck as their savior. I feel that all decent people need a gun and the knowledge to go with it. I have a real problem with guns in untrained hands. You weren't born with ability to drive a car, it is an accquired skill. By the same token you weren't born a pistolero with the know how to safely and skillfully use a handgun. It to is an acquired skill. One problem that I have found as a Firearms Instructor, is that most males in this country, imagine themselves to be born pistoleros, and will not listen to you, until you get some little 100 pound female on the shooting range, who did listen and he gets his know it all A$$ shown up by the lady shooter. That is a humbling experience for most men.
By the way these seninars are completely feee to the residents of my city. We even furnish the handguns and ammo if they don't have their own yet. We have a large collection of really good handguns, that we have taken from the BG's and had condemned for our Departments use. If any of you other cops on this board are Firearms Instructors, why don't you see if you can't get something like this started at your agency. It is great PR and the city fathers love it, when they are invited to speak to the captive audience, of graduating citizens shooters. Along with their certificate I also hand them an CCW appliction already signed by their Police Chief. Don't think that you can't do this at your agency, I wasn't the Chief when I started it at mine, I was merely a lowly Sergeant. This is one of the ways that we can make a difference and all of you guys, became LEO's inorder to make a difference, well here's your chance.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL POLICE, KEEP THEM INDEPENDENT.

I worked as a LEO for 25 years. I am now a parole officer and dont see the same things on the street that the real officers do. I would readily support a national right to carry law. Some training must accompany the excercising of the right and some type of re-training as time passes. From what I have seen most dedicated concealed carry folks train more than the police do, and thats not saying much.

7th Fleet, I had a very similiar program many years ago when I was a lowly sgt, it never got the support from the top and it finally fell apart. Keep up the good work.

Actually, I know a young man like I mentioned. All the talk I hear from the "justice system" sounds like his life is toast. It's sad because I think he's basically a good kid. Best, J. Parker
