Across the country, there is a lot of debate on carrying handguns .

What are your opinions / concerns of citizens carrying concealed handguuns?

Hello. I am retired after 25 years as a LEO.
When Texas offered CHL, I became an instructor while still in law enforcement.

When the street officers learned what the law actually required and the caliber of person required to get a CHL, about 90% supported the new law and a goodly number sent their wives through the course.

Best.

I work in the Nashville area and TN generally has pretty good CCW laws(not perfect, but pretty good). I would love to see a national carry law and alot more "good guys" armed. Alot of co-workers feel the same way.
As to the ones that don't...my opinion as to why they fall into a trap follows... I deal with amazingly stupid(NO...I mean stupid) people daily. Day after day you begin to think these types of people are the norm and not the exception. The thought of these folks breeding is scary enough, but packing heat...and you start to arrogantly think your above the general public when it come to firearms. I DONT DEFEND THIS WAY OF THOUGHT, BUT I SEE WHERE IT COMES FROM.
To this I say...Just because you carry a gun 40 hrs.a week, doesn't neccessarily make you an expert with it.

Everyone has the right, I carried prior to being a LEO. When asked by an acquaintance, whether they should carry a firearm: I tell them that if they wish to carry a firearm that they should train hard and often. Concealed carry requires a "DIFFERENT MIND SET" and a lot of dedication to training. If a person is willing to train as hard and as often as I do, I'm glad to have them out there. I'm glad to have them on my side. Besides "A LOT" of LEO's I work with do not carry "Off Duty." Go figure?

P.S. Trained Armed Citizens Make Less Potential Victims! BG's hate GSW's!

Very good topic, but it really is a General Discussion question. Please look for it there...

Nevermind. The [expletive deleted] software is broken and the move wouldn't take. Carry on.

Where I work it is illegal for non LEOs to carry concealed. I am in favor of the law regarding this being changed...which it probably would have if Harris and Clebold hadn't tried to blow up a high school in Colorado. That kinda stalled the bill.

I'm not saying that I do not have my reservations about having to encounter some of the people I deal with daily, carrying guns...the pervious poster was right...POWERFULLY stupid people. FABULOUSLY stupid. I'm talking STOOOOPID. And I'm not talking at all about the evil people- they already have guns, if they want them. I'm talking about the 'good' guys that Darwin forgot. Jim-Bob the Toothless Wonder with a .44- scary. Yes I know he's not the norm...but he's a part of my daily scenery. *shudder*

But all policies have drawbacks...and I think in philosophical terms allowing CCW is far better than not allowing it, and in practical terms I think it is better as well.

Mike

My feeling is that any law-abiding citizen of this country who wants to carry a weapon, concealed or not, should be able to do so. I also deal with people every day who are not generally considered to be rocket scientists. However, I have more than a few colleagues that are not members of MENSA either. If a person abuses the right to carry a weapon, I think the penalty should be harsh. The concealed carry stats show that an armed society is a polite society.

I think lawabiding person should be able to carry a firearm. I also can't figure out why somebody would not want to carry one.

I have no problems with responsible citizens who have passed the requirments to get a ccw in my state carrying. I do think that people should not carry before they are given some basic handgun training and passed a background check with no felons of coarse and no violent misdemeanors.

I intend to go into harms way.

I work in Southern Indiana and we have a good CCW law. I am in favor of CCW. In ten years I have never taken a weapon away from someone who can legally carry. People with CCW permits are responsible and understand the gravity of the issue. Criminals by definition carry illegally so why have only the criminals running around armed

Hi, guys,

Maybe $.02 from a former LEO. The wrong word is being used here. "Able" to carry a gun? Anyone is "able" to carry a gun. We should well know that "able" and "legal" are two different things. If they weren't, no LEO's would be needed.

Does any real LEO think that anyone who wants to carry a gun will let a law decide if he is "able" to do so? The only ones who worry about the law are people who don't break laws anyway. They are not the ones who should worry LEOs.

The fact is that anyone who wants to carry a gun badly enough will carry a gun, law or no law. For a real BG, arrested for armed robbery or murder, illegal carry is just another charge, and one that will always be dropped before the case ever gets near a court.

Jim

These are very good points about the BG's carrying anyway.

These politicians don't realize that if a BG wants a gun, he can get it quickly. I KNOW that I could get one illegally in about 20 minutes, some of my friends took a turn for the worse.

Isn't it sad that LEO's can't really tap in on illegal gun supplys before and even after crimes are committed. A BG can carry a gun and not get caught unless he has a traffic violation and/or is being monitored for criminal activity. So please tell me how reducing magazine capacity, screwing with serial #'s, etc will get these criminals to turn in their guns.

Oh well....

Guys I travel a lot, I fly for a living, (Fortune 50 company, and not the scareline). I carry everywhere I go within the United States. As PIC (Pilot-in-Command) of the aircraft I am the final authority as to who brings what onboard. I only have a permit to carry in my home state, but I have on many occasions carried concealed in places I have traveled to. I have stood next to Leo’s of NYC as well as many Kalifornia cities, in a fast-food restaurant or quickie store where it was illegal to even possess a gun muchless pack one. And I have even carried on a conversation with them while my P7M8 rode comfortably inside the waistband of my back, covered by a suit jacket or a light windbreaker.

People talk of mindset, people talk of training and manor of carry. I have never let a Leo know I was carrying or will I ever let one know. Why? Because I am the good guy here, my sole purpose for carry is to protect my life and the lives of my loved ones. Not to get an ego boost from it.

I agree with AZTrooper, any “law abiding citizen” should be able to carry NO QUESTIONS ASKED! And there is a reason for it being called Concealed carry.

Now some folks will cry foul because I’m carrying illegal in some cases and I could give the anti-gunners something to whine about, if I’m caught. To them, and the Leo’s of those Communist cities, I say this. Ask your wife or child how they would feel about it if you arrived home one night and said, honey I was almost killed tonight. But a private citizen shot the man who was trying to kill me.

Folks I have said it before and I’ll say it again judged by 12 or carried by 6? It’s your choice.

Vote for your right to defend yourself this November; vote for the good guys.

I'm an ex-LEO, so I'll answer.

I support right to carry laws.

Most, about 70%, of the other LEOs I know, do to.

I have been and remain in favor of carry like the CHL law in Texas. Background check and minimal knowledge of law and deadly force applicability is about all that the permit requires. Heck, I'd vote for open carry for that matter. As has been stated many, many times, the bad guys are going to have them and the cops can't be everywhere the unarmed victims will be.

I'm not an LEO, but my best friend is US Park Police in DC.

He's strongly in favor of law abiding citizens having the right to carry a concealed weapon.

In fact, many times when we go out together, such as Home Depot (we're doing a lot of work on our respective houses) he'll ask me if I'm carrying a gun (I ALWAYS am), and he'll leave his at home!

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

The only cops I know that are afraid of Armed civilians are the cops with "Barney Fife syndrome" they know more and can do more than anybody and that's why THEY can carry. us mere mortals realise that we cant be everywhere and that we aren't responsible for the protection of individual people only the society AS A WHOLE! I cant be expected to protect everyone! I dont even expect to be able to protect my wife adequately as I'm too far away from her during the day to make much difference in her life. I expect her to be dillegent in her own defense and I expect that from you too. if you're not prepared for your own defense needs change that fact quickly, I've broken dept. policy before by telling victims this and I will do it again.

Gonzo,
My feelings exactly. Plus, if someone is not willing to put their own life on the line to save themselves or their family, do they think $50,000 a year is enough to pay me to do it for them? That's why my signature line is.....
