Cabelas Grand Opening - What to Expect?

Sure... Gander is better, if you hate money and like throwing it into the wind for no good reason.

They are the most over-priced "sporting goods" establishment I have ever seen. Their employees are uneducated, lazy, and inept. Their stores are disorganized, dirty, and poorly stocked. And the items that they do have are priced at 150-300% of the competition.

Cabela's is overpriced and overhyped, but Gander Mountain makes Cabela's look fantastic, in comparison.

I couldn't agree more!

I avoid all the big box stores like the plague.

Smuggy Buggys; customers....

Like fine wines, cigars, cars, knives, artwork, etc there are the "smuggy buggys" who want the best(or what they think is the best ) & pay for mark-up/sales pitches/etc.
I don't follow the crowds or get sucked into the hype.
I compare prices, wait to see if a new firearm or product gains support, review the +/-s of a new gun, and trust brand names/proven designs.

Places like Cabelas, Bass Pro Shop, Gander Mountain, Dick's, etc are filled with the new shooters & gun owners who will pay thru the nose for guns, ammuntion & gear.

For me the best part of Cabela's is the gun library. There are always some interesting and beautiful guns on display.

Paying for a credit card, in order to get discounts on overpriced products, seems counterintuitive to me. Perhaps not everyone feels that way

Who is paying for the credit card? My money makes more in the month I have it and the card gets paid off - I'll take the discounts and points for further discounts. I use a CC for just about every purchase - have paid for a cruise, way too much ammo and other things by using their money for a month

High prices, long lines. We had one open up here last Spring and it was lined up around the block to get in the first day; I didn't notice anything special inside, except that they actually had ammo unlike everyone else back then. I actually walked in one week two of it's opening and was able to pick up some 8MM Mauser and .22! They had .22 when no one else in town did. Funny thing is, now they don't have it and everyone else does.

Anyway, congratulations, I don't always necessarily buy at Cabela's due to price, but shopping there is a blast; here, a whole mini-mall has evolved around this Cabela's, and it was already next to a mall in the first place. There's an Ulta for my wife right next door, a target for groceries, restaurants to eat at, including the cafe inside Cabela's and their fudge samples. My Daughter loves to look at the animals too! Especially the fish.

What I really like is the used gun section though; nobody else in town has a comparable used gun section. Heck, their gun section and selection is about as large as the local "gun megastore." It's nice to have options; though the price are usually a little higher at Cabela's. The clothing is outrageous.

Hard to imagine that I'll have a whole day to wait in line...I'll probably go the week after, although it is fun being somewhere on opening day. When Casino Gambling opened up in Central City we went on opening day. All the media types were there...give aways...It was quite entertaining...

Actually Sarge, YOU are, by paying cash. YOU help pay that 3% credit card fee they have to pay when I swipe my card when you buy the same item I do. Thanks!

i used to log airline miles off credit card purchases

it became impossible to redeem them for the time i wanted to fly
it was when the airline would let you......major pain in the neck

i have "bought" three very nice guns from my cabelas points

didnt have a hard time with that at all

i guess every one's mileage varies

i will stick with my cabelas' card

I'm going to DIA tomorrow evening and will be driving right past the Thornton store, so I'll head out an hour or two early and stop by and check it out. Heading to Alaska for a few days, and I have some club points that might go toward a light fleece jacket. Or something.

The best chain store in my area is Scheels, which has excellent prices for our area (prices in our area run high in general, though). Gander Mountain is by far the worst. Cabelas falls somewhere in between.

I bought a Gen 4 G19 a few weeks ago and the prices were:

$540: Scheels (St. Cloud)
$699: Gander Mountain (St. Cloud... about 1000 feet from Scheels....)
$599: Cabelas (Rogers)

I have visited the Scheel's in Reno - a VERY nice store covering every sport around and then some; makes the Cabela's lodge there look small - but prices are your basic full retail like all of the other big box stores (at least the ones who don't charge MSRP PLUS 15% like Gander)

Visited the one in Lone Tree about 4pm yesterday. Mad house. Most of the ammo shelves were already bare. Their Nagant 91/30s were on "sale" for $169 with no accessories. I might go back in a month or so, but I'm not terribly excited.

agreed, i was thinking about going up this morning but think i will wait, not sure if their online store is up to date, if it is it shows only shotgun powder, the only stuff that i need to buy i can get online, would be nice if they had rifle powders in stock.

Forget about "accessories" for Mosins. Rotten leather slings and corroded oil cans are of no use to anyone.

I just went on line and ordered what I wanted, it will be delivered to the store on the 28th. The crowd should be thinned out by then.
