Cabelas Grand Opening - What to Expect?

Two in the Denver area and we can't get one in the entire SE US; have been to a few and the above comments are correct. When Cabela's, Bass, and Gander were only catalog places, they had good US-made stuff at good prices. The minute they opened these "lodges" with $500,000 of taxidermy inside, their prices went to MSRP PLUS 15% and everything is now made in China. Walmart carries more US-made stuff. Their only saving grace, IMO, is that you can sometimes find a nice used higher-grade gun in the Library

They are building a new Cabelas in Greenville S.C., about 30 miles from my house. Academy sports will be across the street. I have found prices to be very good at Academy. Never shopped at a Cabelas but I heard from a friend that shopped at one in South Dakota, had a seamstress on staff to do alterations. That is especially good for me when I buy hunting apparel. Never can get the right length. I hope the one in Greenville will have someone to do alterations on site.

im looking forward to the taxidermy stuff, I used to spend hours in my gramps basement full of his taxidermy tools, pelts, fake eyes, traps ect... its a trade that is being lost.

SW rarely has decent stock in the shooting department.
Gander is better.

Sure... Gander is better, if you hate money and like throwing it into the wind for no good reason.

They are the most over-priced "sporting goods" establishment I have ever seen. Their employees are uneducated, lazy, and inept. Their stores are disorganized, dirty, and poorly stocked. And the items that they do have are priced at 150-300% of the competition.

Cabela's is overpriced and overhyped, but Gander Mountain makes Cabela's look fantastic, in comparison.

I forgot to add, they will be trying to shove the cabelas credit card program up our rear end.

That isn't too bad though as the points you get from using it anywhere help offset some of their costs. get enough points, catch a sale or closeout, and use the card for free shipping and you can get stuff for reasonable prices that way

Paying for a credit card, in order to get discounts on overpriced products, seems counterintuitive to me. Perhaps not everyone feels that way.

I take offense to the idea that my money is paying two or three people to greet me at the door and try to sell me a credit card. Again, not everyone may agree.

It's not your money Sarge. Once you've made a purchase it's theirs to do with as they please, and let's not forget that the people at the door offering the card program have a job that they probably need to feed their family.

I don't take credit card offers from anybody. I have only debit cards linked to my bank accounts. I just ignore the pitch be it in person or by mail, so I'm with you on that, but let's not get all offended because somebody presents an offer.

We have found the Cabelas store here to have many products at fair prices that other stores don't even carry.

In particular I was looking for the Berger VLD Hunting 155 gr .308 bullets and they had them at the same good prices as Powder Valley who is out of stock!

Not only that but after 60 years of gun owning I got two really fine custom rifles at Cabelas!

The last one is on a pre 64 M70 action with a really nice stock. I got it for $529 with a 2-7 Leu on it. It's a .300 Win. Mag.

Here is that rifles forend. Look at that checkering, Super Grade type swivel etc.

And that's not the best rifle I got there! :)

While I do love ogling their gun library, I am amazed at the ridicoulous prices of their firearms.........$200 Mosin Nagants
The one in Hammond IN today had 7 or 8 (I wasn't counting) MNs for $170.

But yeah they are generally higher, about the same as Bass Pro Shops, never been to a Gander Mountain. All that decor isn't cheap... nor is maintaining such a massive selection/inventory of outdoor gear. I wonder what those fish tanks alone cost them?

eta: the Cabela's in Hoffman estates has the unfortunate problem of being located in Cook County so any firearm bought there is subject to the idiotic $25 firearm transfer tax enacted this year on top of the ridiculous general sales tax. IMHO they would have been better off locating in Kane county less than 2 miles away. But they probably got some sort of tax breaks/incentives to locate where they did.

Major chains....

There are a few "big chains" in my metro area. The places that used to be mail order or online way way back in the 1980s/1990s/2000s .
Be ready to get a lot of; "nos". No pistol rounds, no magazines, no CLPs, no 3XL t-shirts, etc etc etc. :(
Most of the shops have friendly staffs & the property is huge. There are a few "weekend Rambos" & "lookee-loos" that gagle around the counters but those customers are in many firearm retailers.

I still lean towards the web for 75/85% of my firearm & gear buying but big places like Bass Pro Shop or Cabelas are good too.

i agree, no need for one of those plastic thingies--- I have never had a credit card. i get 2 offers everyday 1 for credit cards and 1 to refinance my home loan usually to a ARM~~~ stoopid losers- i anit no sukker fish.

i figure ill go to check it out on the first day and see what the rules are, or if they have any stuff i really need. All i need now, is a tumbler and deswager and more componets.

When Cabelas opened in Springfield OR there was traffic backed up for miles. The place was so packed people were elbow to elbow and don't even thick of trying to take a cart. There will be lots of stuff on sale but not any cheaper that I can get at Bi Mart on a daily basis. When I go to Cabelas its either because I want to touch something with my own hands or because no one else has it in stock. They do carry things most other local stores don't.

Expect lots of oows and awwhhs over the stuffed animals and fancy displays. But this all wears off like that new car smell does. After that it's mostly just a giant sporting good store.

Nothing against the Cabela's, I love them just a bit over Hyped.
