bye bye tannerite

There is a prevailing mindset at work in this country today that screams "BAN IT!! BAN IT!" whenever anyone misuses something and causes harm.

Of course, they only want to ban things that THEY (personally) don't use. After all, its no loss to them, and might save someone, right?

The most obvious (to us) is guns, but they do it, or try to with everything. Not too long ago, some kids at a college party got sick, one (at least IIRC) died. The cause? DELIBERATE OVERDOSE of a new "energy drink" and alcohol, combined.

Never mind the fact that the kids ignored the written warnings on the bottles, never mind the small fact that the kids were under legal drinking age (21), and therefore committing illegal acts. Ignore everything else, except the fact that the energy drink was involved. The result was a state wide ban on the energy drink.

On the other side of the coin, I remember, not long after 9/11 a national news network showing me where to plant explosives on the Golden Gate Bridge! OF course, they were reporting on "how a terrorist would do it", but do we really need to give these people instructions???? National media gets a pass. Things in common everyday use by the majority of Americans (like cars) get a pass. Things used safely by a minority, but misused by a handful of idiots, get banned. Double Standard? At the very least!

Back before the Internet, before "everybody" had a phone with a movie camera in it, people still did stupid shtuff. The rest of us heard about it through gossip and urban legends. Today, everyone in the world can SEE idiots doing stupid st..tuff 24/7.

I don't know anything about Tannerite, other than (at this time) it doesn't take special licenses and background checks to buy, and it goes boom when you shoot it.

No doubt in my mind they will try to ban it. If its fun, for us, and not for them, they want it banned! Look for some billionaire with a "big heart" to bankroll the effort, too....

Let's not do anything silly, like hold people responsible for their own actions. We must have the government protect us from ourselves. I live in a small town and rural county. The county commissioners will pass a burn ban at the drop of a hat, I think mostly so that they will have done something during their term of service. When I was a kid and young man there were never such things as burn bans. Now you had better check with the county even if it is pouring down rain.

"Really? Are you sure?
This needs a high speed projectile impact to "go off"."

Maybe you heard of these little things called...pistols. You could rig a spring loaded single shot .22 or even a .25 with a servo. You could have a detonator the size of a lipstick case.

Andy...breath deep....in....out....

OK.

As I said,I prefer to be low key.I do not use Tannerite. But I don't like banning things.

You are in "What if" mode.

Knowledge is dangerous.Shall we ban books and the web?
Skills are dangerous.A lot of folks who come here are machinists, gunsmiths.Yeah,we could make.....about anything.
And most of us have guns.

So,what are you all excited about?

Anyone has the means to do harm.Ted Bundy was a mass murderer with a chunk of firewood.I have about two cords.I have no interest at all in hitting anyone with my firewood.

Think peaceful thoughts,Andy. Ommmmmm.....Breathe....

I'm pretty sure tannerite needs quite a bit more than that to be set off. I seem to recall 223 was about the minimum velocity needed to activate it. Please correct me if wrong.

I'm also pretty sure there are far, far, far easier, cheaper, and less visible ways of creating illegal explosives much more frightening than tannerite (Boston bombing )

But by all means, lets ban this horrible thing and purge the knowledge of its existence from all creation. Through ignorance and submission we can at last be safely free from all thought and responsibility. This is what we've been evolving millions of years to ascend to.

"In the article I shared, they were placing Tannerite in juniper trees and blowing them up. Not only illegal, but not safe there was a fire prevention order in effect prohibiting exploding targets."

If you think another law will prevent stupid rednecks from setting fires in the woods, illegally, by blocking their ability to legally obtain accelerants...I just don't know what to tell you.

Well, maybe just that your lack of faith in humanity is oddly juxtaposed with an apparent great faith in law enforcement composed of humanity, and that you underestimate man's ingenuity and drive to do whatever the heck he wants at your own peril. You will never stop rednecks from doing stupid stuff illegally.

where in my comments did I say I supported "another law"? Where in my comments did I say anything about a lack of faith in humanity or LEOs ability to do their job or any of the other drivel you made up?

Interesting discussion. I am not for bans of most things, typically. You wanna smoke weed? Hey, it's pretty much been proven to be at least as safe as alcohol (I never smoked marijuana... love a beer or 3 or 7 on occasion).

Also, when I was younger count me in the "farmer blowing beaver dams" group. Used many a pound of ammonium nitrate set off by black powder starters. My grandpa used to have dynamite laying around, but he couldn't get it anymore and ran out of his stock when I was really young. It wasn't used to blow up feral hogs or any other stupid stuff with. It was needed for removing stumps and blowing beaver dams with. I guess enough dum-dums did stupid stuff with it that no one (not even the legit well meaning farmer) could get dynamite anymore. When I was young, it was just known that a one or two bag purchase of ammonium nitrate at the farm supply was for blowing something that needed blowing. Now you can't buy a bag for your garden if you had to.

I do agree that stupid hijinks with tannerite needs to be taken care of, but most of these hijinks can be covered under other laws. Of course, I absolutely agree with a range owner not wanting tannerite on his range. If I operated a public range I would ban it from my property myself, unless I had a long (over 600 yards) range and I would set a very high minimum distance for using it. That's the one legit purpose I see for it... long range reactive targets. Gongs do the same, but if someone wants to use tannerite for the same purpose responsibly then by all means.

Tannerite

Last summer, I was plinking, looking for brass and just generally putzing around at my favorite shooting area in the Pike National Forest near Woodland Park, CO. There were some "Airmen" from Peterson Air Force Base shooting and banging tannerite. I informed them the U.S. Forest Service has banned the use of tannerite in all national forests.

On the show, "Yukon Men", two dudes were trying to open the entrance to an old silver mine using several pounds of tannerite; they were not successful.

Another example of foolishness, over the thanksgiving Holliday one man in town here had all of his guns confiscated due to him setting off what some experienced people tell me must have been 2lbs in his back yard not just within city limits but in a busy part of town. People must learn to use things properly or a ban is usually the result. At one time there was this thing called dynamite and it too was once perfectly legal.
