bye bye tannerite

Local news 8 in Dallas is airing a story about the potential power of tannerite. I bet it is off the shelves soon. I have never seen it used.

I have seen it used. My buddy loves shooting Tannerite targets. Personally I think it is kind of juvenile and a waste of money, but I guess it is okay if it thrills you as long as you use it safely and don't be obnoxious with it. It could be dangerous I think if used improperly but then there are a lot of things in this world that are dangerous if used improperly. I am not sure of how much impact channel 8 will have statewide or nationwide. I haven't watched it in probably well over ten years, at least. It doesn't come over my Dish as a local. It might have some impact in your area though, being urban.

I never saw the need for the stuff .....but if it had been available in every sporting goods store like it is now, when I was younger and more easily impressed with "Boom!" stuff (The Field Artillery will make you kinda jaded in that area.....), I'm sure I'd have blown money on it ......Lord knows I blew lotsa money on dumber stuff back then ......

..... if it goes away, that won't stop the farm kids from making their own, just like they did when I was a kid- it's not rocket science: powdered aluminum and ammonium nitrate fertilizer in the right proportions .....

.... between that and the homemade thermite (aluminum and iron oxide, with a sparkler for a fuze), and the ersatz napalm (gasoline and Tide detergent) ...... dumb stuff, but nobody got hurt.....

I am not in favor of banning it.Too many bans, laws, regs, fees, taxes, etc!!Enough!!

Yet,I've never used it,have no plan to.

I like to be low key,not draw attention.Minimum impact.Keep my welcome.

It does not matter to me how much you can assure me Tannerite won't start a fire.I'm not the one who has to be convinced.
Its the Rancher that is kind enough to grant me permission to shoot on his property. We have a mutual Trust factor going.

No matter what I say, shooting at Tannerite,or even asking to shoot at Tannerite, will cause him to doubt that I have proper regard for looking out for the Ranch.I want to be trusted like family.

As far as I know, its outlawed on public land.

But,if I owned my own section, had my own 1000 yd range,GEE GOLLY that would be fun!!

It's already a violation of local laws to discharge firearms or set off fireworks within the city limits of virtually every North Central TX city.

Although AFAIK municipalities have the statutory authority to ban the sale of Tannerite as well, most of them have bigger fish to fry. As you're surely aware if you live in this area, several dozen cities have to ban something around here before there's any serious impact on its availability. :)

I just don't see a great moral panic being created by a single TV news story about Tannerite.

If I am not mistaken, there are already alternatives to tanerite which do the same thing. Ban one, another pops up. I also am not in favor of more bans on anything. We get much more of that we might as well add the suffix "bloc" to whatever region of the u.s. we happen to be in, and I also feel it's a bit childish. Never needed to mix explosions with shooting to get my kicks from it but hey it's their money.

There's not a whole lot people do with tannerite that helps our cause,

My cause is freedom. I want tannerite legal, even though I've never used it. As far as the video goes, Feral hogs do need to be eradicated, but it should be done humanely, if possible.

+1, but IMHO it would be more productive to stop this practice by amending the TX General Hunting Regulations to prohibit the taking of non-protected or exotic nongame animals by means of explosives.

I can't believe tannerite can still be sold in places that do not allow fireworks. Fireworks in the hands of irresponsible people are dangerous. Gasoline, well, what can you say.

HiBC is correct, DO NOT use Tannerite or tracer ammo, or anything like them, on Federal land, such as BLM or National Forest lands. You will end up in Federal court at best, or paying the costs of suppressing a fire.

I've used it once.
It was fun.
That was it.
It made long range shooting interesting because a small amount in a small container was a definite "reactive target", above & beyond the gong itself.
*DING* was a hit, but *BANG* was a bullseye.

I don't get the way shooters can't see that just because you wouldn't do something shooting related no-one else should. Different strokes for different folks kind of sets the theme for me.

There is actually a club of "Extreme Tannerite" shooters who deliberately push the envelope with the stuff.

I just think most people who buy it do stupid things with it...

Now that is just narrow minded internet babble, right there!

How on earth would some one come to the conclusion that MOST PEOPLE do stupid things with it?

Sounds an awful lot like an Anti-Gun person there!

I know, from reading this board, that dakota.potts is all for shooting and firearms freedoms - so why this comment?

For your information, my thirteen year old daughter likes to blow a few canisters of tanerite up every now and then. Every now and then, she brings along a friend, and they really enjoy it, too. That is unless the ear to ear smiles they carry around for the rest of the day are examples of "stupid things"!

I love the stuff.
Just fun to blow stuff up.
Like anything of this nature and destructive potential common sense must be exercised.
There is always going to be someone who miss-uses a product.
Can't legislate crazy or stupid.

As long as they don't outlaw propane tanks & road flares, I'm good.

Living proof that nothing is idiot proof. I just saw a video where they crack the valve on a tank, light the escaping gas & then push it onto a lake & shoot at it, instead of using a flare.

Everybody knows you can't light propane with even a tracer round but you can certainly perforate a propane cylinder with one. Tank explosion? Nah what could possibly go wrong?
