Buy once, cry once.

There is some merit to your thesis.
These days, I only buy S&W revolvers and good quality 1911s. However, I have been burned by Colt and DW 1911s...so my system is not perfect.

Aaron...if you have one, you know...kind of like dating a redhead...everyone else just knows how beautiful they are, but they don't know how really fun they can be until they've got one.

Better you than me. I've loved three redheads in the last 30 years or so, and been burned each time.

Going forward, they are all yours. :)

aarondhgraham,

I think you need to forward post #17 to Washington as we are on the brink of 'falling off the proverbial fiscal cliff' so to speak ;). Can you imagine if the politicians would heed to such simple logic ...

Sorry Stressfire. A Beretta 87 is just a classic.

Yep and the thing about buying a nice .22 is that after a few thousand rounds it is less expensive than a cheap centerfire.

I rather have a high quality 22 than a cheap 9mm

I just committed to a vintage Sig P210. Still trying to reduce the impact to my funds. Selling off stuff I don't need or use, working extra, juggling funds, etc, just to buy a couple extra mags and a holster. I hope it is all I have heard they are. For my remaining years of shooting, I wanted something so accurate that I cannot blame the gun when I miss. :)

Hello, HamsterHamster. I had just bought a house, got married 8 months later..money was tight! Old fellow I bought many firearms from when single invited me over. He had an old Colt Bisley that wasn't working..gave me a break on price, but still had to sell a couple of mine to pay for it. This gun was converted into a .22 rimfire sometime in the 1930's..the cyl. holes were bushed with steel bushings that had a "head" the same size as a .45 Colt to preserve headspace. c' bored for .22 case heads. fit was extreemly snug for .22 long rifle. replaced brl. had wrong taper, so ejector rod housing didn't quite fit right. I took apart..hammer 1/2 cock notch gone..I didn't know who to send it to..no money anyway!..so into a shoe box she went in back of closet. 20 years pass..I talked to Hamilton Bowen..he said he could restore the old gun..I had waited this long..by golly, I was going to do it right!
Sent off to Shillen for a match grade chrome moly 1-15" twist brl. blank..even sprung for hand lapping! Hamilton called and asked me if I wanted a new cylinder fitted? This was to have a 7 1/2" brl. Nothing wrong with old one..just thought he would ask.."think about it" he said.
several weeks later he called and said he hoped I didn't insist on a new cyl. Why, I asked.."because I am not sure I could fit one to shoot as accurate as that gun is shooting!
Hamilton did a complete action job including lightening hammer pull & sight-in.
Once Bowen was finished, it was shipped up to Doug Turnbull, for authentic carbona blue, color-case hardening of frame & hammer, fire blued screws, pins, & cylinder pin. I had exhibition grade 1pc. ivorys fitted.
I was almost afraid to take it out to range..it was so pretty! But I hadn't waited 20 years to look at it! I brought out every brand of long rifle ammo I had..Hamilton was right..it likes Lapua match..at 25yds rest, it puts them in under 1/2"..it shoots as good or better than my 1960 era S&W K22. I think it's that tool-room fit in the cyl. holes...or course that Shillen match brl. doesn't hurt. Only drawback is this thing is heavy!

@Aarond,

I set my eyes on the Beretta 87 because I mostly shoot in the Range. I grew up around guns and I just want a few guns that are well made and a pleasure to shoot.

I have looked at a lot of .22 and I wanted something that strips like a combat handgun. The Rugar or buckmark probably is more accurate but I see cleaning and proper maintance as part of gun ownership and marksmanship.

Like you I am fiscally responsible and even though I can pay for in cash this moment I prefer saving and austerity for a want. A handgun thankfully is not a need for me.

I rented a 84FS at the range and was impressed with it and I would like the same in .22LR.

I hear ya HamsterHamster,,,

I bought my Model 87 new about a year and a half ago,,,
Believe it or not the price was $666.66,,,
Ominous number wasn't it. ;)

But like you,,,
It was something I simply wanted.

I own several .22 semi-auto's,,,
This is definitely my favorite of the bunch.

It was described by a member of this forum as,,,
"A real pistol that happens to be chambered for .22 LR."

Very soon after I got the 87,,,
The Evil Pawn Shop Guy got a used Model 85BB,,,
He knows I have a thing for matching rimfire/centerfire pairs.

This is my pair,,,

I put 100 rounds through the 87 just yesterday evening,,,
It's an extremely pleasant pistol to plink with.

You bet--Heck, I would have told him to round it up to $667 ;)--You never know...

In 1982 or 1983, I popped for an S&W Model 41 and a High Standard Supermatic Citation 106 Military because I was a pretty good shot and I thought "Some day, I'll have the time to run these hard to see how they perform." It was a fortune in those days and I kept them all these years.

Now, I'm retired and have the time to shoot but decided to get some new glasses yesterday to sharpen up those sight pictures. Found out I have cataracts in both eyes. Ain't that the shxts? Now what?

I'm looking for a Beretta 84, also a fairly pricey gun compared to similar ones. Only seen one once but was too cheap to buy it. Next time it will go home with me. It's always been one of my favorites and seems like the perfect gun for me. From now on it's at the top of the list regardless of the price.

Wouldn't mind a nice S&W 686, too.

I finally decided to sell off part of my collection of cheaper guns and save some and order a 1911 built the way I want it. It's a considerable amount of money (for me) and a very long wait, and comes from a very reputable builder. BUT, in the end I will finally have a gun built to MY specs, having every feature that I want.
I guess I've gotten to a point where I would rather have a few very nice guns than a lot of "dime a dozen" guns.

If the beretta 87 is the gun you want....it will be worth saving for.

Between the price of the pistol and ammo and convincing myself "its more than a .22" I bought a FiveseveN. Its easily my favorite pistol and just makes me smile ear to ear when I shoot it. The only problem I have is I reload but have no desire to reload the 5.7x28mm round.

The other pistol I want badly but dont see me spending the money is a Sig P229 Dark Elite w/threaded barrel. $1000.00 for a 9mm is asking alot when my ARs cost me less.

I finally decided to sell off part of my collection of cheaper guns...

I understand that completely,,,
I'm at the point now where I could easily peddle several of my handguns.

For the better part of my life I couldn't afford what I truly wanted,,,
I had to "settle" for what I could afford instead,,,
So when I did get some money ahead,,,
I bought whatever struck my fancy.

That's not a bad thing at all if it's financially feasible,,,
But I do have several very nice handguns I no longer shoot,,,
They truly intrigued me at the point and time of their purchases,,,
But somehow they never made the list of guns I always take out on range day.

Some of them I will no doubt peddle off,,,
But a few are suitable to be given as gifts to friends.

I've decided that from now on I'll satisfy my new gun ya-ya's by renting,,,
H&H has a long list of guns I just want to shoot a few times.

If I find something that truly lights my eyes up,,,
There's always room in my cabinet for "one more handgun".

Ya gotta stop showing me that M87 Aarond. It might just push me over the edge to get a mate for my M85FS. :)

Hey Aarond, I shot the 84FS before but not the 87. Do you mind showing how the thickness of the Grip compares between the two pistols?

I know yours is a 85 single stack but from you photo it looks the grip is different.

BTW, how is the accuracy of your 87? Whould you say it is above average for a handpiece?

Hello again Hamsterx2,,,

I don't have any pics of the guns that would show a comparison of the grips,,,
But I can take some for you tonight and post them in the morning.

By my recollection though,,,
They are virtually identical in thickness.

As far as the accuracy goes,,,
That's kinda subjective since I'm a mediocre shot at best.

But I seem to hit just as well with the 87,,,
As with any of my other .22 handguns,,,
Despite the shorter barrel it has.

Perhaps it's because it fits my hand so well.

Anyways,,,
Grip pics tomorrow.

Hello Pilot,,,

(To a 50's tune)
Oh yes, I'm the Great, Enabler,,,

But I'll help you out,,,
The 87 wouldn't be an exact mate to your 84FS,,,
The FS series was the first one that had the combat style trigger guard.

Does that ease the urge a little bit? :o
