Bush OK's 700 Mile Fence?

Put gun towers and mine fields on the border. May be then we can slow down the flow of illegals. The GOP wont do anything as illegals to them are cheap labor. The democRATS wont do anything as they view them as potential voters.

Bowing to anti-immigration hardliners in the House, President Bush today held a White House ceremony celebrating the signing of the “Secure Fence Act.” Bush told reporters, “The bill authorizes the construction of hundreds of miles of additional fencing along our southern border.”

Bush is right, the bill does “authorize” the constrution of a new fence. But that doesn’t mean the bill pays for it. As the Washington Post reported earlier this month:

No sooner did Congress authorize construction of a 700-mile fence on the U.S.-Mexico border last week than lawmakers rushed to approve separate legislation that ensures it will never be built, at least not as advertised, according to Republican lawmakers and immigration experts.

hortly before recessing late Friday, the House and Senate gave the Bush administration leeway to distribute the money to a combination of projects — not just the physical barrier along the southern border. The funds may also be spent on roads, technology and “tactical infrastructure” to support the Department of Homeland Security’s preferred option of a “virtual fence.”

The “Secure Fence Act” has everything to do with motivating the right-wing base, and nothing to do with securing America’s borders or passing comprehensive immigration reform.

Bring the troops back from Iraq and let them secure the borders, thats thier job, to protect America, not to "liberate" Iraq.

Give them the authority to shoot any of these invaders whom dont follow orders when told to stop.

So then we can get on TFL and read of them JBT soldiers stopping and killing good folks for no reason. I can hear it now, All I was doing was driving through the desert and this JBT stopped me. Who is he to question me? Don't they have some war to fight? Their using our own troops violate my right to drive through the desert. Private Snuffy accidentally shot Joe Citizen, he should be hanged, then crucified, then sent to jail for the rest of his great grand kids life.

This fence is such a bad/stupid idea IMHO only lol It IMMEDIATELY reminds me of the Berlin wall. People say its too keep people out not in. O yeah the Soviets said the same thing to themselves I'm sure.

So what you're saying is that it is really meant to keep people in the US? (Despite no restrictions on travel out of the US.)

Nah, let's don't use our troops on the border; let's use 'em somewhere other than Iraq, though, and use the money saved to build a 100' wall on the US/Mexican border. Another MUST is to not grant citizenship to offspring of illegals. That's absurd.

Amen to that! Unfortunately, it will never happen. the mexicans might get mad

Mexican Border Facts

Nearly three-quartersof the cocaine and half the herion consumed in the U.S. enters through the Mexican border.

According the the Center for Immigration Reform, treating uninsured illegal aliens costs about $2.2 billion a year. Another $2.5 billion is spent on Medicaid for illegals.

Each year 65,000 illegal aliens graduate from U.S. public high schools. Costing us $1.4 billion a year in federal aid to schools.

$1.9 billion is spent on food stamps, WIC, and free school lunches.

About 30% of our federal prison population are illegal aliens. Costing us $2.1 billion a year.

You do the math. $10 billion of your and my taxpayer dollars each year.
We could build and power a 3,000 mile electric fence like the Jurassic Park T-rex pen for a lot less than that.

There are less than 2,000 federal agents assigned nationwide to interior enforcement to round up and deport illegals.

Stretches of fence in high-crossing areas are helpful to the Border Patrol. That which was built along the border at El Paso has meant that the would-be crossers must try outside of areas where they quickly can disappear into the barrios, or quickly get to transportation.

The fence idea would help at places like Douglas, Arizona and in the lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas. The short reach of fence near San Diego has been helpful, already. Probably be a good thing around Tijuana.

I ran across an article that said that the changes in illegals' work patterns, coupled with BP efforts, have had unforeseen results. Fewer are coming over for seasonal work, as re-entry is more difficult after any return home. Thus, fewer farm workers and more full-time workers in cities. That caused the labor problems in harvesting pears in California.

The downturn in housing construction will mean that those who were in that work, fulltime, will have to seek work elsewhere or return to Mexico. Since there aren't that many jobs available for all those workers, odds are that Economics 101 will have an effect on in-migration efforts.

I can't believe some people want to pat Bush on the back for signing this worthless document.

It's 10/29/2006, and approx 6 million illegals after 9/11/2001.

Incedible!

My guess is that a fence just begs to have bolt cutters taken to in on a dark night. I have lived in Tucson and Nogalas AZ for many years, I have seen the Illegals crossing in the desert many times.I think we should suspend any American Aid to Mexico until the Mexican Government works to stop people from crossing Illegally. Vincente Fox is real put out that we are considering a fence. But, by the same token,, I have seen little if any effort by the Mexican Government to try to halt it. For the most part, Mexicans can simply walk through the Border station at Nogalas by saving they are going shopping here.. Occasionally the Border Patrol will have a road block to check cars and trucks, but not enough to matter. I still think it is better to put teeth in existing laws against hiring Illegal's. I was in construction when I was in Tucson and many of the sub contractors are American born Mexicans that hire the illegals to work..There is no real punishment I am aware of towards these employers at all. I bet if they were treated like gun shops by the BATFE and put out of business and possible jailed, the problem would cease quickly.

As to the Mexican government under Mr. Fox or anyone else really acting to check illegal immigration of their nationals to the U.S., forget it. This immigration to the U.S. is, for Mexican governments, a safety valve. Nobody in their right mind ties down a safety valve, and that includes President Fox.

A big ceremony as Bush signed a bill to build a 700 mile fence on the border. Only problem is the border is 3,000 miles long! Thats like fencing 2 sides of your yard, then wondering how the dog got out. Bill T.

True , but it's more like partially fencing one side. ;)

There wouldn't be a political stink if we called the fence, ART. Didn't some artist use nylon to create a colorful wall across someplace? So, we build one of concrete & barbed wire & minefields and put guard towers with machineguns and sniping posts. Having a fence provides walls for graffitti artists to ply their art upon and as for the defenses, they're to keep the vandals out. :p

Somebody may have already posted this, so if it's redundant, then get over it... But...

Isn't there already some existing fence across the border of Mexico, in some of the larger cities? If so, does anyone have the numbers of how much of the border will be left unfenced after this next 700 miles goes in?

Or, does that 3,000 mile figure listed in the original post reflect only that portion of the border that's currently unfenced?

Just wondering...

If it cost $100,000.00 per mile to build a good solid fence, thats only $300,000,000.00, (THREE HUNDRED MILLION), for 3,000 miles worth. A bargain considering what all this illeagle slop is costing us per year. At $100,000.00 per mile that plays out to $18.93 per foot. Fence companies would jump out of their shorts for a job like that. Bill T.

The current administration has done more to secure our southern and northern borders than any prior administration. And yes there is much more to do. Bush has beefed up Customs and Immigration agents (number and their salaries), added electronic surveillance, supported the border fence, and deployed select National Guard forces to border... All great efforts. Yet, there is much to do. States should bear some cost for said fencing; it should not be a totally federal expenditure...

I am pleased with this administrations efforts to ratchet up the border issue and make immigration changes... More work needs to be done...

Hell ... Cut the $2.5 billion dollars worth of spending on this farce we call elections , and you could build a fence around the world at that price.
