buckshot or slug?

are talking about in the house where your kids are sleepinin in the next room. If so through the slugs back in there boxes and load up the buck 00 will do the job and wont go through 2 layers of sheet rock and have enough energy to kill the kids in next room. slugs -the kids in the next house will have to duck for cover slugs great for game not great for hd

I like the buckshot slug combo rounds. That way you get some spread and the slug to follow. In my home our bedroom is actually under ground on two sides. There is no concern due to over penetration in the most likely shooting areas. Vermont houses are built weird.

I used to buy beers on sunday when I was younger in brattleboro, VT and my buddy was from Fairlee, VT(both on border). I remember some houses and mainly a business like this. VT had some questions marks for me back in the day. lol, but I respect their CCW law of having no law.

yeah Asavo, I dont mess with the slugs at home- I saw one go theu four seperate things before hitting a tree one time(another story from back in the day). lets just say my friend shot one in his grandpas home by accident out of the shotgun

I have my 870 loaded with 00 buck shot on all but the last round which is a slug... i know a lot of people dislike loading 2 kinds of ammo but I don't think maying the last round a slug will hurt any think and it may help if the thing invading my home is a bear (not that it would happen where I live.)

I have my 870 loaded with slugs, my kids are grown. I read too many buckshot failure stories to keep confidence in 00 Buck. I know slugs will do any job I ask of them and only one heavy slug to control instead of 9 lightweight ricochet prone buckshot.

I prefer slugs, but my neighbors are too close to make them my first choice.

So, I load with 000 Rem buck and keep slugs in the butt cuff. Will try out some of the Fed Flight COntrol 00 buck soon, though.

No candy-cane loads for me. I wanna know what's coming out of the pipe.

You dont honestly believe that do you???

WOW... some of the things I read on gun forums frankly scare the crap out of me.

Do your family/loved ones a favor and check out this site: http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot3.htm

#4 buck for me, but over-penetration isnt a huge concern. Its a nice balance of pattern density/recoil/energy for me.

The overpenetration crowd:

You do know that 9mm, .40, .38Spec, .45ACP will ALL penetrate more than 00 buckshot pellets?

I am aware that there are 8-9 8mm pellets flying at a single target, but if you pattern your shotgun, you should know what those pellets will do at certain distances.

I'll just leave this here

Well Hell's Bell's!

The above looks like Ballistic Gelatin...NOT Drywall! WTH?

As a police firearms instructor, and a bottom line keep-it-simple-guy, just buy Remington, Winchester, or Federal 2&3/4" Buckshot for short money. If you have to keep up with the Jones, and spend money doing it, then buy the "reduced recoil" stuff.
;)

Any shotgun loaded with nearly anything, including birdshot, will penetrate drywall at close range. I've personally seen the result of a 16ga loaded with birdshot (#7 if memory serves) that was fired indoors (accidental discharge) and it went through multiple interior walls.

Personally, I have no need for slugs in a HD situation because I have other more penetrative firearms available. My HD handguns will easily penetrate almost any intermediate barrier in my home with the possible exception of my refridgerator, and I've got rifles that will penetrate that. To my mind, loading a shotgun with slugs basically turns it into a large-bore rifle, and I've got higher capacity, lower-recoiling rifles that I can use.

I just posted this in another thread, maybe it is better being discussed here
=======================================

I don't know much about the tri-ball I mentioned in my last post and I am not sure if I am hijacking this thread or maybe I should start a second thread about ammo. Three pellets of .60 balls in each shell

The tri ball load seems effective on paper, but regular slugs are not exactly NERF loads.

I see little need for slugs for HD. However, every HD shotgun's also a potential Militia tool and may needed to be deployed outside during a crisis.

My HD shotguns are loaded with 00. Slugs are nearby if I need 100 yard threat management capability.

Use environments can vary greatly. 00 is often the best choice but we ALL need to devote some thought to exactly what we need our defensive ammo to do, and not to do.IMO, birdshot of any size in hardly ever the best choice.

Anything capable of stopping a threat is capable of overpenetration. It's up to us to practice until we can place our shots where it counts.
