Boston Bomber's firearms?

When I've gotten into discussions with anti-gunners I have always brought up the Aurora shooter. Typically psychopaths desire a certain tool to do what they want to others, if he wasn't able to be fulfilled choosing a "hunting" rifle or shotgun or whatever, or felt the capacity not to be to his liking, who's to say instead of linking his apartment to explode, which apparently could destroy the building and the next door building. Who is to say he not blow up the movie theater? A confined space full of people, if they use film still tons of flammable material, plus adjacent theaters nearby and typically one narrow exit or two out and one fire exit per theater. The death toll would be more akin to the Oklahoma bombing. Kitted guns that look like evil guns have a place, they are there to protect store fronts, families, and they are designed to scare those who wish to cause harm to the carrier. But they also can facilitate a mad man's desires, and in this sort of circumstance that can be a good thing.

There were calls for stricter gun control after the Oklahoma City bombing. Much was made of the fact that McVeigh was an NRA member, and that he'd made disparaging remarks about the Assault Weapons Ban.

There were real efforts to paint all gun owners as domestic terrorists over that.

I would swear that I saw a news report last night that they only firearm they had between them was a Ruger pistol. Too busy to look it up right now, but I'll see what I can find later and post a link if I can come up with it.

That's what NBC is reporting. The only gun recovered was Ruger semi-auto with the serial numbers removed:

So much for the arsenal. Though I suppose there could be guns not yet recovered at the bottom of the Charles river or something.

In the pictures of the actual gunfight between the two and police, one of the brothers is clearly holding some sort of rifle.

He's also holding it in the classic untrained low hold and pointing it not aiming it.

Four words: Who the hell cares?

Big brother's dead, little brother's screwed, and it makes not the slightest difference what guns they used.

The media and politicians do, and that makes the issue worth watching. They'll try to spin this into appeals for new gun control.

The rhetoric will be something like, "bomb-throwing terrorists used guns to kill cops." It's not about cause and effect, it's about associating guns with terrorists.

It's the same thing they did with Timothy McVeigh, and I've no doubt they'll try it now.

I don't think they had a rifle. It sort of looks like he has a rifle because of the lighting and his shirt, but looks like he's aiming a handgun to me:

the most recent report I have heard is that they were armed with a single Ruger 9mm pistol, and their homemade bombs.

Also that things went south for them when they carjacked a car that was basically out of gas. When one of them got out to pump gas, the jacked owner was able to get away....

and from there, things got even worse for them...

its a good thing that Murphy works on the bad guys, as well....

According to the latest from CNN the younger brother was not even armed when he was cornered inside the boat. The hundreds of rounds fired came only from police ( a gauntlet style firefight) the injured LE was a result of friendly fire.

I don't think they wanted to the guy to live.

So basically the claim that he shot himself in the mouth was manufactured.

The media will absolutely misrepresent this. We had an LE in my town killed by a drug dealer with a shotgun. The whole
Story was about how he had an AK-47 assault rifle and why they new to be banned. It was the cops who had to set the record straight but the media never got off the AK 47 hype. The AK was still in the box.

I've been wondering if at least some of the weapons used were from the MIT police officer they killed. It would not fit the gun control mantra to talk about how a police officer's guns had been taken on a rampage by terrorists. If the guns were someone black market assault weapons they would be talking that up to push the president's gun control agenda.

On the TV coverage there was a guy stripped naked and put in a patrol car, who was that ? What happened to him ?

Found it. CNN left it out of their head line but lots of other played it up. Appears it is not "official" though?

The manhunt for those responsible ended last Friday, when Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured after a tense standoff after he'd hidden in a boat in the yard of a home in the Boston suburb of Watertown, Massachusetts.

The teenager was unarmed when he was wounded in a barrage of gunfire, and there was no firearm found in the boat, said several sources from difference agencies familiar with the investigation.

Aside from the improper English "several sources" is hardly official making me somewhat skeptical.

There once was a time when sources actually named the person and or the agency. In my experience "several sources from different agencies" means things I overheard or something other reporters were saying that I was too lazy to confirm or was unable to confirm.

So far since the article was published there has not been a newer article claiming anything different (to my knowledge).

Plus most News organizations are (usually) quick to pull articles that they feel they might have made a mistake with.

So I tend to not be skeptical about it.

Only time will tell.

But as it stands, it appears to be a "gauntlet". All it would have taken is one panicked officer to fire a bullet and the whole thing probably erupted out of control.

If the bombers actually had an "assault rifle" at any point you can bet your ass that would have sparked another run on awb by gun control advocates. So I don't think they actually had one.
