Bolt Action Rifle

I want to get a bigger caliber bolt action gun like the .308 and I was looking at the Remington 700 ADL scope combo for $450 at cabelas. Does anybody know any other gun for about that price that you think is better??

Thanks,
Zach

Better for what? What do you want to do with it? What are your requirements?

They're fine rifles but it helps to know all the extra.

My rule of thumb, when you touch the barrel just in front of the chamber, if you can't hold your hand on it for more than a couple seconds, you need to let it cool. I can't say how many shots it will take to get to that point, it all depends on how fast you are shooting, how hot the ammo is loaded, what the temp is outside, etc...

Letting the barrel/chamber get too hot causes premature throat erosion and also can cause your shots to start "stringing". Instead of a nice little group, each shot hits above or next to the last one.

For about $100 less, you can get a Marlin XS7 combo. Every bit as good as that Remington combo (and probably more accurate). The scopes on both of them are "servicable" but not high-quality by any stretch of the imagination.

Personally I would recommend adding a more quality optic to the gun, as if you want to shoot to the full potential of the gun at more than 100 yards it would be a big hinderence to accuracy. Preferably a Leupold, but if those are out of your price range, even a Nikon Prostaff would be a nice upgrade.

Re: Scope.

Leupold is good, but I would also look at Vortex over the nikons. Vortex has the best warranty in the business, should you ever need it, and offer more features for the money over other brands.

The Crossfire II from vortex is a good entry level scope.

Precision Shooter , if I ever shot 3 rounds at a rang in 20 seconds do u think that would hurt it that much, if I ever did I wouldn't that often and of at all

No, 3 shots in 20 seconds won't hurt.
3 shots every 20 seconds sustained with no cool down time is a no no...

I can see that you are wanting to stay with that $450 budget...
If you can't wait and have to have something now, buy a rifle then a scope. You can get a better scope than what comes on the package guns for about the same overall money...

It isn't that it "hurts" anything - it's just that as your barrel heats up your point of impact can change. You can blast away as fast as you can pull the trigger and reload and you won't hurt a good bolt-action gun. However, don't be surprised if your groups look like shotgun patterns. A good target shooter will slow down, take his time, and work with the gun rather than fighting it.

Are there any bipods that are around $50 and are good ? Cause I don't want to spend a lot on a bipod but I would like to have a bipod to use to shoot at the range. And I know you can spend a lot of money on a nice bipod.

I have put:

10 shots through a barrel in 60 seconds...

24 shots through a barrel in 50 seconds...

20 shots through a barrel in 10 minutes...

30 shots through a barrel in 20 minutes...

and there was no shot stringing whatsoever; all shots went to call.

So have thousands of others.

'Tain't the barrel getting hot that causes problems. It's the poor fit of the barrel to the receiver. Square up the receiver face and the above will happen.
