Bolt Action 308 with Irons

I realize that I am looking for a bolt rifle, and this is the bolt forum, but someone has a great deal on a 7400 308 carbine (GASP). I might have to think about that. Short, light, very handy rifle. Might be just what the doctor ordered for hogs in the river bottom.

Be VERY careful with any of the Remington autoloaders (742, 7400, etc). They don't call them Jamamatics for no reason.

Rem 7400/740 is a very nice handling brush gun, and capable of bolt-type accuracy. A lever action like Win 88, Browning BLR or Savage 99 could also be a super choice.

A Sako would be a nice choice. Get the factory peep sight and you are set. The Mannlicher full-stocked model is very cool. Oldest Rem 700s were side tapped for aperture sights, up into the A series of the early 70s. Win 70s all had side taps until USRAC.

For brush bustin' think I would go more for a .356win or .375win in a Marlin lever action. Ashley outdoor sight set and you really have something.

For a fine .308 you could use in the brush, the FN-H Patrol series has much to offer.

Own a .357mag handgun? A .35 Whelen Rem 700 or 7400 let's you load pistol bullets for pliinking, and there is the RCBS 200 35 mold. Use it in your handgun and rifle. Couirse a .358win and .356win will also interchange with handgun bullets.

Still hunting is fun, like being close enough to a doe to slap her rump in archery season. Lots more to see in the forest when you are looking all the time and moving slowly. 22" barrel length seems more versatile. If I was hunting deep brush, and wishing I had a 20" barrel, likley I would really be wishing I had a hunting handgun. Hard to beat a scoped super redhawk in a chest pouch holster in thick brush or steep hillside.

Yes, I am aware of the Jam-o-Matic reputation of the Remington Auto-Loading rifles. It's not at all an either/or situation, just a possibility of picking up a very lightly used one super cheap. Still looking for a 308 bolt with irons with a light profile short barrel. I also would prefer a good used one, just haven't found it yet.

I look at the 7400 sort of like a little gambling with a low risk at the price. No doubt can pick several nice used rifles for the price of the Sako.

Remington 700 SPS, .308 Win, barrel shortened to 18”, synthetic stock, Holland Gunsmithing muzzle brake, XS Ghost Ring adjustable rear sight / scope bases, Timney trigger, NECG front hooded sight - front sight blade .10” thick, Leupold 2-7X compact scope in Warne medium high QD scope rings.

An outstanding, super fast handling compact rifle that has become one of my very favorite's.

100 yd accuracy is about 1.5" - more than good enough for all of my needs. I'm sure I could get it down more with hand load development. This is what I shoot with my generic .308 reloads.

Regards,

Rob

gman, I'm sorry but the auctions appear to have expired. Keep looking though as those aren't the only ones I've seen. Lots of the older Savage Model 11 and model 110 rifles have iron sights.

OK, rolled the dice and bought a new 308 Remington 750 carbine. Hopefully I wont be sorry. Now that I have that distraction out of the way, I can find a bolt carbine that I like. I bought a new one because I am somewhat doubtful of used ones. At least I can send it back if it don't work.

I know, that is a sad attitude to get into a new rifle with.

look into Jeff Cooper scout rifle

Ruger offers the gunsite scout rifle
Savage has a scout rifle.
Steyr is the high end of scout rifles.
They all come in carbine length, with iron sights.

I was going to post the same thread, now I can just read yours. That CZ is a beautiful piece of hardware.
