Bolt Action 308 with Irons

Gman, I might add, they have a cheekpiece, more the Bavarian style, not quite as rounded as the American style, and a square opening in the top of the front sight hood to allow plenty of light to the sight ---- lots of compliments at the gun range and of course the black powder guys go nuts over the full length stock ----plus the end cap and front sight look cool ---

I just acquired a .303 British with the barrel shortened to a little over 16''. It is insanely handy and quick to the shoulder. Instead of a peep sight, it has a forward mounted optic. It would be hard to outfit a surplus military rifle with a nice sight if you don't like the one on it. I am a huge fan of sporter military rifles as many that have been sporterized are quite a bit less expensive and shoot as well as many new production weapon. I have 3 of these and I can vouch for two being shooters. I shot a 7 point with my .303 and I can group about the size of a half dollar at 200 with my american enfield. Dad paid $35 for the enfield about 15 yrs ago and I paid a little over a 100 for the american enfield. I have seen them in .308 but they can be a bit hard to come by. I am sure a good gunsmith could help you out with changing the caliber of that is the route you want to go. Just saying you can get a lot of bang for your buck.

OK, I saw the one on Buds. Have done some studying on them. There are a few issues that I wonder about without seeing and handling one.

Is the magazine follower plastic?

I hear of a so called "Wood Lottery". As in you may get very plain wood, as in not at all what the stock photo shows. Not trying to be picky guys, just like nice wood.

Inconsistent bluing of the barrel and receiver (different colors).

Any input on any of these potentially disappointing possibilities?

BTW, still looking for a 308, but also found a 1941 Mod 1894 that looks pretty good. Probably going to grab it up. Also saw that Buds has the same rifle in .30-06. Also a possibility since I have as much of that stuff as .308, one more couldn't hurt.:)

Assume you're talking about the CZ?
Steel mag follower.

Wood does vary some, I have a great stock on a 455FS that's figured almost like tiger stripe maple, other 455s have been a little plainer.

My 550 has a dark straight-grained figure that I think looks nice.
The loaner 550 Safari has fairly plain walnut without much figure to it.
Two loaner 527s have dark-figured grain patterns.
The 557 loaner also has a dark grain pattern.

None of the CZ wood here is anything I'd call ugly.

Bluing's consistent on all of the ones here.

Thanks, yes I was referring to the CZ. Think I may go with 30-06. Looks like they are all long action, and the shorter cartridges use a detachable magazine due to that. I prefer the hinged floor plate type internal magazine which looks less bulky to me. 30-06 with a 20.5 inch barrel should be a real blast to shoot.:)

I chose the .30-06 for my 550FS because of its feeding and its power capability with heavier bullets.
Yes, it's the long action, but I can live with that.
Still a fairly short rifle.

Chronographed it & the 557 Carbine in same caliber on Wednesday.
At the range a week earlier both were about equal for accuracy.

My preferred .308 "shortie" is a discontinued Ruger Compact Magnum with irons & wood.

One other nice thing about the CZs is that the company will sell you more spare parts than some others.
Never hurts to have those on hand.

Gman, let us know which one you decide on--- this has been an interesting thread ---- personally, I think if you go with that full length stocked 06, you will be surprised at the ease of handling and pleased with the CZ accuracy ---

Still letting it simmer a bit in my mind. Thinking hard on the 550 FS 30-06. Shot my Husqvarna 640 t30-06 hat I bought last week yesterday. 1.5 inches at 100 yards on the steel plates, (what's left of them) so I am getting into the irons a bit. I like it.

Here you go...carbine length, rugged iron sights, nice hardwood beech stock and .308 NATO caliber. :D

Looks like a small ring Mauser. What is it, and where would one find it?

Numrich has a very nice Bavarian stock for the Mauser. Could be an inexpensive alternative that you have brought to light there. That would be about the limit of modifying a rifle for me anymore.

After considering building a 7mm WSM from parts, I found that it was going to be more trouble than I was interested in, and more money than I wanted to spend.

Also my brother recently reinvented the wheel with a 6.5 Swede on a Mauser, not inerterested in going through that mess either.

But, if I found one already chambered in 308 that is already carbine length that all I had to do is change to the type stock I want, I would be interested in that.

I think it's a Model 1916 small ring Spanish Mauser that was converted to .308 at some point. Bought it because I liked the idea of a small carbine in .308 and it was cheap (had a C&R license at the time, too). However, some feel it is unsafe to fire full power .308 in these rifles and I can see their point. I believe there are a few large ring mausers out there that were converted to .308 NATO. They should provide a good base to work with if you can find an inexpensive one with a good barrel.

I just ordered the Savage Hog Hunter in .308. This rifle stood out more than any other bolt action .308 I looked at. Quickest decision I ever made on a gun. I’ve been wanting a CZ for a long time, and would have bought a 527 a few weeks ago, but nothing in stock anywhere. When it comes back into stock, I will buy it. In the meantime, I couldn’t resist the Hog Hunter.

Of course, there is a plethora of aftermarket wood stocks for the Hog Hunter.

Still leaning towards the CZ. Although I saw a LaCoruna FR8 Mauser 98 large ring action carbine in 308. The price is a bit high for what it is at $400.00, but it is strangely interesting. Said to be one of the rifles that originated the "Scout Rifle" concept. The sights seem sort of crude to me also.

30-06 or 308 is still causing me to waffle around a bit. Either is OK though. It's really just a matter of finding the rifle that speaks to me.

I had a .308 Hog Hunter here.
Shot well.
Decent gun.

Not the equivalent of the CZ in build quality, if that means anything.

You can find plastic .308s at cheaper prices that shoot well, if that's what you want.

If you're tired of plastic & kinda like real wood & old-school quality, the CZ has it.

Whichever works for you. :)

FWIW, I've had my 7.62x39 CZ carbine for about ten years, and it has survived many buy/sell firearm cycles. It's simply a ton of fun to shoot. I really don't think you could go wrong with the 557, or a used 550.

A short 308 makes a lot of sense to me. This one is in '06 but that's pretty close. Does wear glass.

Had this built from a 1924 Mexican Model 98 (can you tell I like full stocks?). I specified 308 caliber but it was delivered in 7x57. No problem, I like that one too. You can see I left the receiver not drilled for scope mounts.
