Bob Munden vs Jerry Miculek

Do you know ANYONE that has hit a 6x8 target at 1000 yards offhand and standing? That alone is a incredible shot. Most guys here couldn't even see that plate, much less hit within 10 yards of it.
It was a demonstration of phenomenal skill. IIRC the range was 600 yards and it was done with a .44Mag revolver.

I have met and watched Bob Munden perform, I was not impressed. He is good, no doubt, but came across as arrogant and condescending. I was not the only one present who thought so, my friends agreed.

roklok: I owe you an apology. Sorry for being rude. I REALLY liked your well worded explanation of WHY you did not enjoy his show, and, why his credibility is in question.

For what it's worth: I used to work for an ex-Green Beret. He was an incredible martial artist, athlete, a very good shot, liked to kill people, accomplished business person, but he lied, and, I knew it. I confronted him on it one day and he just caved in and said,

"Your right."
I asked why he lied, since his REAL accomplishments were absolutely incredible.
He said,

"I don't like to tell the same story twice."

Socrates, thanks for trying to translate my thoughts, but your translation skills suck. The OP wanted to know our impressions and thoughts on these two shooters. I have no problem admitting that Munden is a phenomenal shot, in a whole different league than me (or you, or most anybody else). His shooting was amazing, no doubt. However, after each shot, he felt he had to explain to the crowd the difference between hundredths and tenths of a second. As if we could not comprehend the difference. It went something like this........ "now you all are going to go home and tell your buddys that you saw Bob Munden draw and shoot a target in .2 tenths of a second....wrong.....that is .2 hundredths of a second." It really got old. As if the crowd was a bunch of uneducated inbreds that could not comprehend how good he was. He also went to great pains to explain how he was "the fastest there EVER was" and how no one in the old west would have been able to match him. As if being the fastest in his lifetime(which is also disputed) is not enough. He MAY be the fastest there ever was, it just came across as arrogant and unneccessary to claim he could beat anybody who ever lived.

I am an avid shooter, and have done my share of competitive shooting, and am able to recognize when someone is in a whole different league. Of course, Munden is one of them. He is also in a whole different league when it comes to bragging about how good he is, as if his shooting alone is not enough. It detracts from his skill, in my opinion. And I am certainly not the only one who thinks so.

Here is a good read: http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1069253/1/index.htm

I've met both and watched both perform and in my opinion Jerry Miculek, no Bob Munden, no.....they're both great at what they do but Jerry Miculek impressed me the most.

Yep, Miculek impresses me the most.

Roklok is right. My favorite is when Munden tried to explain how his draw was faster than the speed of light.

Mr. J is a most unassuming person, a genuine nice guy.

I have his autograph on a S&W poster......

Yes he is. You'll never talk to a more modest and personable guy. A real upstanding fella.

I shot in the same 3-gun match as Jerry a few times. Walking back from lunch once, our paths crossed, and he asked "if I shot that slug stage yet" and I had not; he is very approachable, and not all competitors at that level are. Also, at a match at his range in La., he used his old bicycle to get across the range. THAT was a sight. :D

You're not talking about the one they held back in the middle of October are you?

I have never seen Jerry in person, but I have seen Bob Munden in person. They have a diifferent style of shooting, in the quick draw and trick shot arena Munden would probably come out on top. In the fast accurate lead on steel matches Im sure Jerry would come out ahead. I think both of these guys are awsome to watch, this is my opinion but I don't think anyone has the right to say how bad one of them sucks unless they can beat em!:D:D:D

Howdy Terry A., and et al.,

I have very high regard for both gents. They both have a number of parallels that are impressive talents. What I know of them are devoted husband, father, outstanding gun smiths, marksmen (Bob's 600 yrd shot with the 44 mag and Jerry's 200+ yard upsidedown shot with a 22LR), and entertainers. I appreciate each of them as individuals for their contributions to our country and the shooting sports.

I have not had the pleasure of meeting or shooting with Bob, I have enjoyed being squadded with Jerry on several occasions at United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) matches here in AZ. I've also been fortunate enough to have bested Jerry on an opening stage by 0.01 seconds. Oh don't let me forget to mention the fact that he was running his wheelie and me a bottom feeder. (a diminutive victory for me but a prominent demonstration of his talents) Jerry is quite the gentleman. A very courteous professional and one of the best spokespersons that Smith and Wesson could have on staff.

Jerry frequents AZ quite often as he shoots several matches in the state throughout the year. If it has trigger, he can run it well. One of the best demonstrations of his character was several years back at the Mystery Mountain 3 gun during one of the challenging stages he had his shotgun fail catastrophically after only a few rounds on a jungle run. He stopped and professionally informed the RO. “She won't play anymore..” as a disappointed Jerry walked back. No cussing no swearing, no excuses. A true gentleman and a level of class that is rare in competition in these areas.

In closing, I'd like to also extend my gratitude to Jim Scoutten and crew for providing us all the opportunity to know and watch Bob and Jerry for all these years. (Jim used to be the newscaster on KTVK Ch 3 in PHX way back when. Both my father and I admired his professional style then as we do now.) Also to their professional and personal support of our country and the shooting sports!!

Well Done to each of them!

Cheers!

That was a fascinating read about a complex and controversial individual, Munden.
According the the 4 page article, Munden is an excellent shooting performer and an even better self-promoter.

Munden is faster!

In a gunfight, Munden would win I think... (joking) Other than that, they are both top notch shooters who most people would love to be even close to their ability.

I like both gentlemen. Munden seems misunderstood. I take all of his talk as tongue in cheek, that he's having fun with us. I don't think he comes across as arrogant at all, it's his thing. Never having met the man, that's how I take it anyway.

Both are excellent shots at different types of shooting. Their personalities are very different however.

I agree with Zenner 22....I think that Bob Munden's "schtick" is his tongue-in-cheek humor. Jerry is just so down to earth, matter of fact, and unassuming.
I really enjoy both these guys and both their styles a lot. Again, I would pick Jerry to be with me in a gunfight over Bob.
While we're at it, Tom Knapp is one heck of a shooter and his personality is terrific for exhibition shooting.
These are all great guys with enormous talents. I still can't understand how they payed for all the ammo they had to have shot before they got their sponsorship! That's DEDICATION of time & money. No wonder they're so great!

By the way I loved that article about Bob Munden, from Sports Illustrated no less! It's from 1989, but I never thought mainstream would ever care about any of the shooting sports.

One thing I really liked about the article is that nothing like that would ever be published in any gun magazine. It was a bit critical (honest?) of Mr Munden. Regular gun magazines would never do that kind of profile with that kind of honesty. The mainstream gun press is far too polite to do something like that. If they don't have something nice to say, they say nothing at all. Not sure whether that is a good thing or not.

I love them both but they are two different type of shooters. I have talked to Munden and he and his wife seem very nice. I LOVE watching his demonstrations.
