Best shooting .22 pistol

rugers are the par which a good .22 pistol should judged by.

Not saying they are the most accurate..., but I was blown away by the capabilities of my stainless 5.5 inch barrel 22/25. Eats crap bulk ammo like nothing else with no jams and flawless functioning. the fixed barrel design makes these ruger mk series the flag ship of Ruger.

People complain that its a pain to take apart, but I never fully take mine apart.

just take the bolt piece out and you can do all the necesarry cleaning needed. 10 shot groups under an inch at 25 yards says that I got more than my moneys worth.

"aproaching 4000 rounds with only 2 duds and a few malfunctions that i can count on 1 hand is something else to behold for a .22lr." The 2 duds came from dirty crap bulk remington subsonics;)Wish I'd gotten and MKll now but I still won't ever let go of my stainless champ. so many upgrades and modification options... what more can I say

Hello
I myself like Revolver's over Pistols. ;) Here is the one I qualified with to obtain my Hand gun permit. Many laughed when I showed up with it to qualify with. By the end of our shooting session No One was laughing anymore. It is a S&W 1947 Transitional K-22. Shown below it is a Target I shot with 6 rounds off hand from the 20 Yard Line....If you are looking for supreme accuracy, get your self a K-22 you will Not be unsatisfied ;) Hammer It

I would think the best .22 pistol would be the brand model of choice the Professional Hitman or Goverment Trained Assasin would use.

Custom modified and tweeked Ruger Mark II

Ruger Mk II and III are excellent pistols for the money and I've owned a couple. In revolvers try the S&W model 17 or 617 family. But if you're getting into serious target shooting you'll want the S&W model 41 and you can find an excellent used one for $800 + or -. I have three model 41s and consider them the premier of American made .22 target pistols.

nice shooten hammer it

:)This is my 15 shot group at 25 yards rested with my 22/45 from yesterday.

excluding the 2 mess shots the 1 hole group measured .80 inch center to center.

ammo was fiocchi sm 320

The range master commented that i had an excellent squirrel gun.:)
Not too shabby for about 5 inches of barrel travel....

:) S&W model 41 used
Hi Standard Ciation, Trophy, or Victor. Older models.
S&W revolvers, models 17, 18, 617

Get one of these and you will never be sorry. Don

For me, the Ruger MKIII is an absolute hoot at the range. Mine has VQ "innards" (which taught me a great deal about this gun), a Burris Red Dot and custom grips... She's a tack driver!!

i love my walther p-22 target model. dont have a clue why more of these guys dont mention it.

The P-22 is a decent gun for the money, and they can be a lot of fun to shoot. That said, they don't begin to compare to some...shall we say, better made .22 LR chambered handguns.

My personal favorite is a Colt Woodsman. Being a revolver guy, perhaps one day I'll put forth the money for one of the better made S&W .22 revolvers.

One can never own too many quality .22 handguns.

If you're looking for something well under 800...

I'd primarily suggest (like a lot of others have) the Ruger MkII target or III. Affordable, customize-able and nail drivers. First pistol I've ever shot and definitely a favorite pistol of mine. You can't go wrong with it.

I've heard good things about buckmarks as well. Browning also has come out with a 1911-22 pistol that holds 10 rds and is 85% the size of a normal 1911 chambered for .45 acp.

Though if you're comfortable spending around 750, I'd suggest looking for a gently used S&W Model 41 target. They're incredibly accurate and a blast to shoot.

it helped me out shoot 7 "better made" guns in the last competition i shot in. 5 had malfunctions. mine had none. how do you define "better made"? older? heavier? brand name? cost?

FWIW - Guns & Ammo "Handguns" issue June/ July 2011 had a .22 pistol shootout. They compared the Beretta U22 Neos, Browning Buckmark, Ruger 22/45, Smith Wesson 22a, and Walther SP22 M3.

The Ruger and Browning received the highest ratings, and the Walther SP22 had failed (numerous misfires).

The Walther SP22 ...that's the space age looking model, totally different from the P22 which is a fine pistol indeed. My brother has a P22, shot it , loved it.

Keep in mind that the ratings don't necessarily reflect which pistol is the best for you or me. One thing is for certain - a reliable 22 semi auto pistol is more fun than a barrel of monkeys :D.

That is a very good point and question. I don't have an answer. I do know that some folk shoot the Rugers very very well. My best slow fire score still to this day was shot with my Mk.II. The "but" is that I personally have not seen any championship match won by a Ruger (but then, I haven't been present at every championship match either). Of the number of Master class shooters that I know, none shoot a Ruger. There are quite a few Hammerli 208s and some FWB AW93s.
