What do you guys think? I mean, lets say you dont have one (ha ha) and are in the market for a sniper rifle for home defense. I would prefer 308 win because ammo is so easily available, but what do you think is the best rifle?

I'm not exactly sure what you'd be fighting to need a full powered rifle for home defense. I suppose if we were being invaded, it might be handy, but otherwise.. :)

You won't be needing any "sniper" rifles, though, because you won't be "sniping" anything..

Scoped rifles are next to useless for home defense.

Home defense implies that you are defending your home, an area typically ranging less than twenty feet.

At twenty feet, a scope is only a hinderance. If you are considering targeting an intruder at 100 yards or further, I would seriously suggest that you consider keeping an attorney on retainer.

LawDog, at 100 yards, I hardly think that "intruder" is intruding on much of anything pertaining to one's home. :D

Using or contemplating a scoped rifle for home defense simply shows a stunning lack of information as to what the term home defense means.

May want to take a look at a red dot sight, but not a scope.

If you need a scoped .308 for home defense, you must have a house that puts the Biltmore to shame. What possible scenario would have you engage threats to your life at ranges that necessitate a long-range precision rifle? If you need a scope, aren't they far enough away not to be an immediate threat?

scoped sniper rifle ?

Pretty Boy, A scoped sniper rifle is used to shoot at a longer range than you would need for home defence. And if you did use one for home defence, think where the bullet would end up. Maybe trough the BG "bad guy" the walls in your house and into your neighbors house killing someone next door. You are talking about a gun that can kill someone at 1,000yds. Get a pistol 30 cal. or a shot gun.

Man, when the sh#t hits the fan you guys are gonna be out of luck... I wanna be able to start dropping bad guys at 1000 yards at the closest. Pistols and shotguns are fine AFTER its too late...

And dont even get me started with the 30 cal carbine, i guess thats what you meant anyway... Thats just gonna make em madder.!

'Scuse me, but at 1000 yards, unless they telephoned, telegraphed or telegrammed, how does one distinguish between a bad guy and somebody on legitimate business?

Here comes the some college kid trying to sell magazines. Blam! Here comes some Seventh Day Adventist (or any other holy roller) to talk about Christ. Blam! Here's some guy trying to find his buddy's house so they can watch the game tonight. Blam! Avon calling...Blam!

I don't know any self defense laws in any state which permits one to "snipe" at someone they "think" is a bad guy. Finally, if one is going up against the military, don't forget how the Brits dealt with known sniper posts in WW II. "Hallo? Can your battery (pronounced, "batt-tree") kindly send a few shells over to XYZ? Jolly Good! Thanks Old Boy!"

Sniper rifle for home defense.........

Pretty Boy........YOU got to be kidding..............?
Aren't you???.....

Yup, y'all will be out of luck. Myself, I use a Barret M82 for home defense. I live in the middle of a lot of cornfields so if the BG's are coming from the West I can stop 'em cold before they leave the next town over.

I used to worry about overpenetration with the .50 BMG round. (there was an embarassing incident one day when a terrorist--I think she was a terrorist, she was wearing a brown beret and a brown smock emblazoned with the word "Scout" on it, and carrying several boxes--seemed to be sizing up my property from about 2 miles out. I missed and found out later there was some sort of damage to a prize hog. Luckily they never figured out where the shot came from.)

However, I now special-order .50 caliber bullets made from a low-melting-point alloy which turns to liquid goo after going two miles from the friction of the air alone. Hit any farther out than that and it's just like a paintball.

Or something like that. :)

come on guys.. a lot of their ideas are just common sense... i mean, i dont want a lot of kids getting hurt. Safety is more important
than anything else
.

You know, I'm getting a pretty damned good chuckle out of I---- Boy...

Perhaps we should keep him around as the TFL pet?

Or would that be giving loyal pets everywhere a bad name?

You're right Mike ... besides, this could open up some entirely new lines of inquiry.

Which sniper rifle is best in urban situations and college dorms?

Am I justified in shooting in self defense if I pick up a bogey on the perimeter of my lawn with a night vision scope at 3am?

In a riot situation, wouldn't .30-06 be better precisely because it will overpenetrate, and thereby take down more members of the attacking hordes?

Is it legal to conceal a sniper rifle, or do I need a special permit?

Yes, perhaps Pretty Boy can really straighten us out here. After all, he was a SEAL, er ... SELL, er ... SEEL, right? ;)

[someone's thirteen-year-old clearly got a new computer ... ]

What do you guys think? I mean, lets say you dont have one (ha ha) and are in the market for a minivan for plowing bean fields. I would prefer Porsche 911 Turbo because 92 octane is so easily available, but what do you think is the best pickup truck?

Do you think I am an idiot or a moron? BTW, what kind of noises do trolls make?

I reckon trolls make noises like bearings rattling after turning 8,200...They're way out of balance above idle, IIRC. Probly makes'em blow out their awl seels.

1000 yds?

Pretty Boy, does your mom know you are on the computer? Have you ever shot anything at over 500 yds let alone 1000? I would bet not because then you would understand what type of weapon you would need. I would also bet you live in the city as well.

I can tell you Pretty Boy was never a Seal. They know enough about weapons to talk the talk. I work around the guys from time to time at Seal beach, and I have never met one that would say something so stupid. He would never make it past the first 2 days of BUDS, they intentionally weed out people like this.

Hey - I like my Sniper home defense rifle.
.50 Caliber automatic with a 24 power zoom. With it, I can poke the badguys in the eye with out even pulling the trigger.
