Best made American Auto

My favorite Semi-Autos (USA-made)

No particular order.

Dan Wesson 1911s such as my beloved PM7 .45.
S&W Shield (plastic)
Sig Sauer P238 (My carry gun of choice. Made in USA if I am not mistaken).
Ruger SR series (plastic; I have the SR40c as another licensed carry gun.)
Colt 1911s -- can't have enough of these. I have the XSE and Gold Cup models.
Kimber 1911s -- lots of good ones. I have the Eclipse Target II and love it.

There are lots of good semi-autos made in USA. The above are my choices. For foreign guns I like the CZ75B -- all models are great, simple guns made in the Czech Republic. (ex-commie guns; very reliable and nicely made.)

The one with the easiest parts replacement program.
Probably a GLOCK ( yuk )...maybe in .40 ( yay! ).

I think the FN 40 would be a good choice.

I prefer Beretta pistols.

I will say that I think a full size Glock is a great choice, If you can get that trigger to ~5 lbs then you have a dream machine.

My latest is a G29, I do the trigger job 2.7 lbs w/minimal take up. Dream about that.;)

Glock 19 gen 4. since that's the first & only semi that I own & just bought
and I can carry this concealed no problem even living now in South Fl.
I made a spread sheet based on all of the posts and answers about Semis.
Size, weight, sights, mag size, etc. etc. etc. then I made my own list and went
out and tried 4 models. For me Glock won.

The Ruger SR series is terrific for stryker-fired poly guns. Better than their foreign competitors.

The S&W M&P Shield is right there with the Rugers.

Kimber and Dan Wesson 1911s are world class guns between $1100-$1600.

My $.015

The definition of "best" is difficult.
So I will use a definition of "best" as quality and dependability.
Beretta M9 has been used by the U.S. military for over 3 decades. The bugs have been worked out of this model and it is a quality handgun with dependability as proved by the military. This is not opinion, but fact.
What other handgun can make this claim?

So have we determined what's actually "American Made" and what's "Assembled in America"

Is there a list of where parts from various firearms originate from?

Are firearms perhaps like "american made cars" and stuffed with parts from many other countries?

Glock?
Ruger?
S&W?
Keltec?
Sig?

Whatever the best is I probably can't afford it. That said, for a highend but reasonably priced (compared to some custom 1911 builders) handgun I'd check out STI.

Yes but Jet Li was able to remove the slide from Riggs's 92fs in Lethal Weapon 4 so you just have to know that you can't use your M9/92fs to shoot Jet Li. :D

Based on the news I read about the DoD's XM17 Modular Handgun System (MHS) selection process, Glock and SIG Sauer can make this claim to replace the aging Beretta M9's currently issued to U.S. War fighters. The British MoD replaced their aged BHP's with the Glock 17. The Navy Seals, USAF pilots, and Army Special Forces already have the Glock 19. Glock has reportedly submitted the Glock 17 and 22 for the MHS trials, and SIG's P320 is still in the running with the P320, which is the only true "modular handgun system",

Glock 19. Made in Smyrna, Ga.

Most Glocks made in Smyrna are for export. They make them here because it is easier to export from here to some places vs Austria. The majority of Glocks sold here in the US are from Austria built for the US market with no proof marks. The production capacity in GA is small. At one time there were more US made Glocks on US shelves because Austria could not keep up with demand.

Fortunately for all of us, there are many candidates for the title of "Best Made American Auto" and more than a few have been nominated in this thread. When it comes to quality of material and finish, workmanship, accuracy and reliability at a relatively affordable price, my pick is the Smith & Wesson Model 945.

When I asked about the firearm being American made, I initiallly meant American designed American owned and American manufactured.

Assuming California hasn't outlawed them, the American-made 3d Gen S&W autos come to mind.

Unless you have to have *new,* you could do worse than a lightly-used 3d Gen-something.
Sadly, if you remove the 1911 and various 22's from the equation, this is true. The S&W 3rd Gen guns were the last "premium" American production pistols that weren't plastic. Sure, you have Beretta and Sig factories, but those are European designs and European companies.
I have a couple of Smiths, a 39-2 and a 915. Both are all-American, and even the value-line 915 I have hangs in there with the Beretta I also own. A little more compact, same capacity, better implementation of the slide safety IMO, and a better trigger reset. No noticeable difference in accuracy either.

A shame it's come to this.
