best deal you ever

Gun deals....

The best deal I ever saw was a ad in a local newspaper(remember those things?) in the early 1990s for a 4" barrel K frame model 19 .357magnum. It was offered at a estate sale for $50.00!
Yes, $50.00 USD. I was mad because I didn't have the $ on me.
I didn't see the S&W revolver but I have no doubt it sold quickly.

The 2nd good deal I saw(and purchased) was a NIB(new in box) LE agency surplus Beretta 96D .40S&W. The Beretta Police Special came with 03 Robar NP3 magazines, Trijicon 3 dot night sights, Farrar rubber grips. The sale price? $581.00. :D
I'd just got a new credit card & decided to snatch that pistol up. A gun shop employee told me a few months later the state LE agency that requested the special Beretta duty pistols were trying to get the surplus models back from local gun shops.
Several of my friends & co-workers agreed that it was a terrific deal on a 96D. This was in 02/1997.

Best deal on a revolver was at a LGS where I happened by right after they put out a SW Model 547 (9mm). I did not initially buy it because the price was a little higher than comparable K-frame .38s. I changed my mind after a quick Internet search and went straight back and got it. A year later, the gun was worth triple what I paid:

I was hesitant to post this story as it is the revolver forum, but.

20+ years ago in California, My ex's friend and husband were over visiting.
He was working security and trying to get on to the local PD at the time and they were strapped for cash.
He asked me if I knew anyone that was interested in a Walther PPK, I asked how much. When he said $100.00 I told him to go get it.

Ended up with a pre GCA act PPK, 100% Walther in 32acp.
Sold it to a neighbor that had a much newer Walther in 380, he hounded me for months and I sold it to him for $350.00 to shut him up.

I helped a friend out,,,

I helped a friend out,,,
When her father passed away,,,
I helped her clean, catalog, and price his "arsenal".

That took three days because he had a lot of guns.

When we were finished she asked me if I wanted any of them,,,
I picked out these four guns:
S&W Model 36 snubbie
Trooper MK-III in .357 Magnum
Dakota SAA Clone in .357 Magnum
J. P. Sauer & Sohns SAA Clone in .357 Magnum

I didn't have much money so I was trying to decide which one I wanted,,,
I told her I only had $500.00 dollars I could spend,,,
She said that was fine with her.

I meant for one handgun,,,
She meant for all four.

I told her we had just finished valuing the guns with the Blue Book,,,
She said that she just wanted to get them sold,,,
That I had helped her $500 worth anyways.

How could I turn that down?

As she dropped me off at my home she handed me a blue plastic S&W box,,,
She said, "Here, this was my dad's favorite pistol. I want you to have it.",,,
Inside the box was a pristine 6" S&W Model 629 no-dash .44 magnum.

I was dumbstruck,,,
Two days later I scrounged another $300 bucks,,,
She wouldn't take it even after I argued with her for a good long time.

It took her about three months to peddle the rest of his guns,,,
She netted somewhere just over $20,000 after all the smoke cleared.

So basically, depending on how you look at it,,,
I either got five guns for $100 each,,,
Or four guns for $125 each,,,
And a free one.

Ruger MKII Hunter stainless BBL in new condition. Still had the pink dot they put on when they inspect it, box papers for $229 out the door.

In 2006 my LGS had a S&W Model 67 .38 Special sitting in the case with a tag that said $299.99.
Well, this is California and the stupid laws here make it hard to find good used guns at times so I
asked to look at it.

They'd bought it from some dumbjohn who had tried to polish out a small scratch with a
3M ScotchBrite pad, but otherwise there was nothing wrong with the gun. The LGS owner said he'd
had it for about 3 months and just put it out the prior week but no one had even looked at it.
I told him with the finish bunged up like that I wasn't surprised. Since I'd bought four guns from him
in the last 2 months he made me a deal to take it off his hands. He dropped the price to $279.
I made a show of debating the idea and he sweetened it was a box of Federal 158gr LSWC and a holster.

Here's the before picture. You can see the goobered up finish on the frame behind the trigger.
He certainly scrubbed hard.

I spent about an hour polishing out the left side of the frame and it looked pretty good.

I went further, polishing the frame and barrel and using a fine polish to bring up a shine that make it look like a nickel plated gun.
Add a pair of S&W Target grips and she looks mighty snazzy.

A few months later I walked into a different LGS and set my eyes upon a nice looking Model 10 in the case.
When he pulled it out my heart raced and I asked if he had the box too.
Yup. It was a 5-inch Model 10 in pristine condition with the box, papers and cleaning tools, still in the plastic bag.
This was a D-prefix (1970 dated) serial number and almost identical to the 5-inch Victory .38 I'd learned to shoot on from my dad.
I looked at the price tag and winced. I just looked at the dealer and said "Really?" (pause) "For a Model 10?"
The dealer shrugged and knocked it down another $30 so I paid him $299 for it. It dates to 1970. She's a real beauty.

I got a Smith and Wesson 29-4 made in 1988 at a pawn shop in 1997 for $200.

It was like new in box.
I still have the box, manual, and original wood grips, but I like to shoot it with rubber grips.

In 1997 it was worth $450.
Now it is worth $900.

I have done a lot better that that with the stock market since 1994, but I can't shoot stocks.

Surplus CZ 83 with minimal wear on the grips. Internals were like new. $200 and it's one if the most accurate, softest shooting, most fun pistols I own.

OK, you asked for it.

1) I bought an average condition H&R .32 auto circa 1930 for $50.00 back around 1980 from a coworker. It was a cute little thing.

2) I answered an ad in the paper from a guy wanting to trade a .22 for a larger gun. Since the H&R was not really my cup of tea, I went to see his trade.

3) He had a Ruger Standard .22 and a Llama .22 semi both as new in the box and would trade either of them for the H&R. To make a long story shorter, I finally traded him my H&R for BOTH of his .22s.

4) The Llama was also a cutie, but loose as a goose, so I sold it for $150.00 to a neighbor. The gun was OK, just not a tackdriver.

5) Fast forward 20 years, I sold the Ruger for $400.00 to GANDER MOUNTAIN. Turns out it was a rare model, something about the barrel length which we found in a value book. I rarely fired it, it was LNIB.

True story

Smith and Wesson 610-2

Eight months ago, LGS, on consignment but in with the new revolver case...
$400 plus tax. Had never even heard of a 610, but was surprised when I looked it up... After I had bought it!

How about a LNIB Smith & Wesson model 19 for $200.00? Well, it wasn't quite that easy. A group of us each contributed $200.00 to buy a gun collection from an estate. We cut cards to determine the order, then took turns choosing until everything was picked. My share came out to a pretty rusty Colt New Police .32, a pair of Iver Johnson top break revolvers, and an Ithaca 20 guage pump. One of the other guys wanted the shotgun for his son and offered me $75.00 for it. I sold the Colt at a gun show for $125.00. Now I was even. I spotted the Model 19 with a $450.00 price tag. I got it for $200 plus the Iver Johnsons.

Around 1995 I got a S&W M19, 2.5" in excellent condition. The owner had purchased it, dry fired it and took it to a gunsmith for tuning and a trigger job. He then shot less than two boxes of ammo through it and decided he didn't like it. I bought a package deal from him that included the M19, two speed loaders with nylon case, two leather holsters, and a fifty round box of ammo. Not sure why he bought the accessories and ammo before using it much. Paid $250 for it all!

I have never really gotten any great deals on anything but, as far as firearms go I got my S&W M&P AR OR's for $600 each.

A brand new stainless Ruger New Vaquero in .45 colt w/7.5" barrel for $329. What was even more shocking was where I got it...Gander Mtn.

Got a model 15-3 from the original owner for $50. (about 1965) He needed/wanted a Python. He didn't keep it too long. He now regrets getting rid of them.

Best deal I got wasn't a revolver. I was trying to sell a polymer AR lower that I had bought for $90. Guy offered me a LNIB Beretta 32 Tomcat.

Another one was a CZ-52 that I had $89 in. I traded that and a box of 7.62x54 for a nice Remington 742.

Best deal I ever had on a revolver was a old model 357 Blackhawk. I traded a $200 S&W Sigma for it.
