I was in the market for a 45 a couple months ago. Went to a local gun shop and saw a s&w model 10 4" with some pachmyer grips for 200!:eek: it had some holster wear but the gun felt solid. I wanted it but it wasnt a 45. I came back a week later and it was gone. I dint buy because i already had a 357 so i didnt really "need" it.
But now that i think about it, it was a really good price for a smith.

Im kind of new to shooting and guns and all but was this a good deal?
The big question.
Whats the best deal you ever saw or bought a handgun for? Details are would be nice.
 
It was a pretty good deal if the finish wear was minimal. I have paid more.

The best deal I ever got if I think in terms of present value was a 2.5" Colt Diamondback 22. It was a good price at the time and the value even at that time make it an extremely attractive purchase. The value now is about 7x what I paid for it.

If it was in good shape it was a very good deal. I lucked into a Dan Wesson 357max back in 1992 in a pawn shop for $200 and jumped on it even though I didn't have any ammo for it and knew it would be difficult to find, started reloading and am still shooting it and treasuring it. The owner actually reduced the price to $160 to get it out of the shop, seems it had been there for a few years, because of the 357max ammo being discontinued. After buying it, I told the owner that it will shoot 357mag too.:);):D
 
You very well may of passed on a good deal. The fact it was gone a week later is further proof.

I am pleased with my purchase this past week of a Colt Official Police in Nickel finish for $203. I am sending it off for a refinish since it has lost about 10% of its original finish. It was the 240th Official Police made by Colt in 1943 (Pre-War). The fact it came in nickel finish made it significantly more un-common since these were typically law enforcement firearms.

My sweetest deal ever came last February when I scored a new Sig P220R for $611 and change. This was approximately half price on a brand new pistol.

I like to brag. :)

I want mention the times I have lost my butt. :(
 
In the last year, Ive come across three nice S&W's for pretty good prices.

First was a real nice 4" 19-5 for $400. Some minor finish wear on the muzzle, but other than that, real clean, and barely a drag mark on the cylinder.

About a month later, I walked into a little hole in the wall type shop, and they had a "minty" 2.5" 19-3 for $450.

Last week, I walk into the place I got the first 19, and they have a basically NIB (in its original box) 28-2 for $500. From the looks of it, I dont think it was ever shot.

Still looking for that nice 2.5" 66 though. Something in the same price range would be FM. :)

If the finish wear was monimal It was a very good deal. Nothing to beat your self up about though. Lots of good Model 10 Smiths out there.

My very best in recent years. Thompson Center Contender G2 Sainless, 35 Remington Super 14 barrel, 14" match 22 rimfire barrel, Buris 1.5-4 scope, and Boyt case. All for $250.

I picked up a 1937 S&W 38-44 Heavy Duty for $270 about four or five years ago. While I was there I also picked up a S&W model 520 for $360. Around the same time period I picked up a S&W model 13 with a 3" barrel for $275. So far I still have all three.
 
I picked up a 90% 1967 colt diamondback .38 2.5" for $400 this year,

A few years ago I picked up a ppk for $375 that turned out to be a nazi SS issued gun, don't know the exact value but its a lot more than I paid.

Last year I picked up a s&w 10-6 pencil barrel that's mint without even a turn line for $225 thanks to some really bad pictures on an online auction.

Also picked up a 98% ppk/s in the box with all paperwork, factory test target, and extra ported barrel for $350 because of a mistake the seller made on another ppk....sold it after I won and paid for it, so sent me a much nicer one to make up for it.

Also picked up last year was another 10-6, a gorgeous one that was heavily customized for PPC competiton with heavy barrel, target rib, and tuned action....bid and won for $350

Picked up a springfield m6 scout five or six years ago for $125. Wish I hadn't sold it.....for $150. definitely made someones day that day.

Edit: I forgot the 98% Chicago PD commemorative 66-1 I picked up last year for $375, and the 95% 4" 28-2

I no longer consider "need" or "already have".

If I see a screaming deal on a cool gun, I just buy it.

If I don't have the cash, I put it on layaway. Period.

Yes, I cleaned the heck out of both guns and added correct grips, but that's not a big deal.

best deal

glock 27 250 bucks looked new. not a glock fan and only one i own but a friend had it and decided it needed a new home.
 
Wow those are great deals guys. Wish i had bought that smith but oh well live and learn.

The "best" deal i ever bought a gun for was $550 for a g21 new and 3 mags. Nothing compared to the deals posted but around here glock go for $650+.

A Dan Wesson 357 max for 160!:eek: Nice. I bet even the hottest and baddest 357 magnums wouldnt shoot this gun loose.

I bought a LNIB Dan Wesson .22 revolver at a yard sale (no extra barrels) for $100.00. This thing was a beauty. The seller at first said he had sold all guns, but then remembered this one in the house and went and brought it out. I got it immediately. I ended up trading it toward a .22-250 rifle at the same store that the seller worked at. I asked if he was sure that was the price he wanted for it, and he said yes. I thought that was kinda strange, but it was a very good deal. That was quite a few years ago. I still have the .22-250, and it has taken 3 mule deer bucks by my daughter since then. jben
 
My neighbor got a like new Walther PPS 9mm from his brother in law for $300 when the BIL didn't like and couldn't adapt to the magazine catch design. Then my neighbor needed money, and asked if I'd buy it for $300. I said no, but I'd give him $350. STILL a great deal. :D But this is about revolvers, right? Not more than 4 months ago, got a sweet S&W Model 10 2" from 1964. $229. Had crappy synthetic mother of pearl grips, which were replaced with a set of Thailand made (cocobolo?) very hard, very colorful wood.

I bought a S&W Model 19-5 with a 2.5 inch barrel that was an overrun of the Diplomatic Security Service contract. It was shipped with Pachmayr grips and a matte blue finish. The LGS manager told me it was a poor refinish with cheap grips and that if I wanted the old thing I could have it for $250. I almost broke my arm reaching for my money.

Also, I bought a 1957 vintage five inch S&W Pre Model 27 for $400.

Not sure which was the best deal.
 
I picked up a like new stainless Ruger Redhawk 7.5in .44mag for $300 a couple years ago, not anything I really need but hard to pass up for that.
 
I've had a cpl good deals over the years...a 1931 Springfield '03 National Match for $1600...still in the shipping grease with the NRA sale papers...a Smith and Wesson 4th variation Hand Ejector in .32-20 in "as New condition for $325 four or five years ago, a really nice Combat Commander in satin nickle sporting a Wilson barrel and bushing...sometimes you just get lucky, you feel good about the trade, and part friends with the dealer or seller...sure makes for a nice day. A fantastic deal I got in a revolver was...

Couple years back, my buddy went flying head-first off the deep end in to gun buying and shooting. He shot when he was a kid, but only a bit here and there since, and almost overnight, he -REALLY- got in to it. It was to the point that he was simply looking for any ideas I could give him on what he might be interested in next. It was a fun ride for a while.

He's since backed way, way, WAY off it. He still has a bunch of guns, but has gotten rid of many and hardly shoots. This is for a bevy of reasons, but a big one is simply his interest in it, which has waned.

In any case, he offered me one of the guns that I helped him find in the first place. (of which there were MANY!) My best deal was on a four-inch heavy barrled Smith & Wesson Model 10-10 that was a former Dept of Corrections issued revolver. This one dates to 1994 and I looked over, handled and otherwise "shook out" eight different revolvers on the day he bought it to choose that particular one as the pick of that litter.

So he paid $250 plus tax for it and I got it from him about two years later for the same $250 but no tax. It's obviously well used, but it's a fantastic machine. It was my fourth Model 10/pre-Model 10. The market says the price was right and fair, but that's just the "market's" opinion. I know that it's value to me as a shooter is FAR beyond that soft market.

At $250, it still seems like a steal.
