Best Compact 40 S&W

If you are willing to spend the money, I would suggest a SIG P229 or the H&K USP Compact. Both are fine firearms and very accurate.

Last month I found myself in the same predicament you are in, and these were my final 'candidates'.

My solution - I bought the SIG. I'm going to buy the H&K at the end of the month :).

My son's H&K .40 cal USP compact: Just about the finest handgun I've ever shot, period. Alas, too large to stuff into a pocket......
BUT............................Kahr MK40, now there's the ticket - 23 oz of thunder, and beefy enough to take it. Jeff the 22luvr

Best Compact .40

IMO - A Glock Model 27 with: 1) Pearce Grip extender; 2) Arotek extended slide release; and, 3) Arotek Suretouch extended mag release in a Fobus paddle holster loaded with Federal 165 gr, EFMJ's. However, my G23 with the same mods (minus Pearce Grip) and loadings in the same holster is mighty fine too. A little heavier, but just as concealable. - Lee

Is without a doubt either the Kahr K40, the Glock 23, or the Browning HP .40, whichever I happen to be carrying that day. I hope to add a SigPro 2340 to that equation soon.

Glock 27, my personal favorite ccw, with Pearce grip extension. Though many consider the Glock 27 a sub-compact and the Glock 23 a compact.

.40 Compacts

Glock 23 for me.

If the G23 didn't exist I'd probably go with a Sig Sauer P229 or Walther P99

"If it doesn't fit comfortably into my right pocket, it ain't goin." That's my requirement for carry. My son owns the H&K .40 cal USP compact and I think it is just about the finest handgun I've ever handled and shot. However, compact it isn't; in an IWB, it feels like a brick. The Kahr MK40, on the other hand, although it weighs in at over 23 ounces, just disappears in my pocket. The Kahr is built expressly for pocket or IWB carry where I don't think the H&K is. Man, the sucker is just a fraction larger overall than my P32 which is really-really small. I've field stripped the MK40 just to see how such a small package could stand up to the power of the .40 cal round and the little thing is really robust. No problems here. Just my thoughts.

USPc feels like a brick

That is an interesting comment. The USPc is about the same size as the Glock 19 with a more contoured and slimmer slide. The grip is also very thin to the point where it feels frail. HK acknowledges this and so uses steel magazines to give support to the grip.

For concealed carry, put the gun in your waist and walk around, sit, bend, jump, attempt quick holstering and quick draws etc.(you get the idea). At the end of the day it is which one is comfortable for you.

HK USP 40c -LEM

The LEM trigger is the slickest DAO trigger out right now. I used to carry a G27 then a G23. The triggers don't come close to the LEM.

My wife took my first LEM so I bought another one :D

The HK and Glock 27 are great guns, but if compact is the key word, then the Kahr MK40 wins. If you haven't shot one, try it. I'm amazed at what this tiny pistol can do!

For concealed carry?

In order of preference:

Kahr MK40
Glock 27
SIG 239

Overall, with everything considered:

SIG 239
Glock 27
Kahr MK40
