Best 9mm semi choice for large hands

So I went into the gun store yesterday fully intending to get a Glock semi in 9mm. After picking up several models it was obvious that none of them were going to fit in my hand. All the grips were too short. The salesman then had me handling a couple of Sigs. They were both very nice, and very expensive. The one that fit best was the P226 Tacops, mostly because of the extended magazine. I asked about other models to consider and mentioned CZ, but then he kinda implied that they are not great guns, and were not very popular in their store.
IN SPITE OF THIS I picked one up. It felt very comfortable in my hand. Great price, too.

SO what is the deal with these guns?? Most everything I read online about them is pretty good.
Are they good guns or not??
Any information you can offer is much appreciated.

Are there any other pistols I should be looking at?

Headed to a gun show tomorrow morning....

Though not my first choice CZs are fine pistols and if one works out well for you then go for it. You might want to check out the Beretta 92FS/M9 also which are in the same price range and on the larger size..

I absolutely love my CZ75B single action. I'll take a CZ over a Sig any day. They work just as well, fit my hand better, and are 60-80% of the price of a Sig. That's all my opinion of course. Check out the CZ P09 and P07 as well if you like polymer.

As mentioned, the M9/92FS is also a great option. Did you check out an XDM? They have longer grips due to the 19 round mag.

Sig 226 & 229 fit my hands well, and they 'feel right'.

If that's what you get with the CZ, then that's your gun, as every gun / hand combo is different.

Sig 226, Beretta 92/M9 (one with replaceable front sight), CZ 75... All good pistols... Most double stack DA/SA pistols fit larger hands well, the longer trigger reach works better for large hands too.

CZs are excellent guns, accurate and easy to shoot well. They can be a little rough around the edges, but smooth out considerably after a few hundred rounds through them.

Which model glock? Was it a gen 3 or gen 4?

If a Gen 4, try a gen 3 if they have them, and if not, ask to try the glock with the backstraps provided in the box. They have two sizes in the box to increase the grip size. I hate finger grooves, and the ones on the glocks never fit me right, but they fit others just fine.

The same goes for other pistols, as many have adjustable backstraps. Some are easy to swap and change right at the counter. Some may require a tool to push out a pin, luckily if thats the case, you do not have to install the pin just to feel the different sizes. Any shop worth its salt will gladly allow you to try the different backstraps to help you make a choice.

Pistols like the M&P, VP9, PPQ, FNS... all have this feature.

The Sig 320 has some very nice feeling grip size changes, but they are not included with the pistol, and they replace the entire grip frame... Hence the nice feel, as they can alter all the dimensions to improve feel.

Beretta PX4 Storm. Fairly long, thick grip to start with, and comes with an extended mag. Also has extra back straps if you need even more girth.

Love my CZ PCR, Great range, duty, or concealed carry gun. Anyone who says CZ isnt a quality pistol, clearly is ignorrant to the facts.

Cz is an excellent pistol especially if you have large hands. If you don't (like me) , they can be tough to shoot well but the design and performance is top notch. I sense they are more popular among those who know then the casual enthusiast which is probably why they don't sell as much. They aren't sexy. Love mine.

Another member of the Beretta family you might want to check out is the Cougar series, now made by Stoeger. It probably has one of the largest grips on any pistol currently made, but yet for me and my small hands anyway, it is far more comfortable than even the double stack Gen 4 Glocks (17 and 19). And count me in the camp as well who loves CZ's!

Not sure what you consider large hands. I usually wear XL gloves, and I really like my CZ's. They fit my hands very well, especially after I switched out the grips.

Re: the gun store owner talking down CZ's, he is entitled to his opinion. Something to consider, though, is they tend to run a little cheaper than some comparable handguns so that may also have played into him pushing you towards other options. CZ's are kind of a niche brand, but are gaining popularity. They aren't as well known in part because they aren't a popular law enforcement sidearm in the US, nor are they a US military sidearm.

Sounds like the guy behind the counter doesn't know his product line very well, has a bias or a slanted commission base.

CZ is an EXCELLENT choice. It performs and handles beautifully. My wife owns the 75 P01, loves it.

Were there any CZ clones such as Canik in the case? (I'm sure the same clerk will not like that brand either).

Bottom line, if the weapon of choice fits your hand, you're comfortable with it and have the opportunity to get out onto the range with it and like it, buy it. I would recommend you not make a purchase until you have the opportunity to be out on the range with the gun.

Good luck, happy shopping.

Sig P320 Full size, Carry size, and Compact - and M&P full size. None of these are expensive; and they're awesome pistols.

I agree... Glocks feel cramped to my hand, as well.

I have owned all the popular models over the years and like you i have big and odd shaped hands. My plans are an XL but my fingers are only Large. Buying gloves is interesting. Anyway, I absolutely love the way M&P's fit my hand. The grip is just long enough that I do not get pinched when doing mag changes yet the trigger reach is short enough to get good placement on the middle of my index finger.

I will echo what others have said that CZ's are great firearms. owned a couple; sold them both. My only problem with them, and this is MY issue YMMV, is that I train for an over the top grip to rack the slide and the CZ's have VERY short slides (in height) which make gripping them less than ideal. Plus in every LGS near me, you are lucky to find mags much less anything else.

My CZ 75B and Beretta 92s were great guns, functioned PERFECTLY, as did my Beretta Px4 Storm .40. Trigger reach just too long for me. So any would be great for you I would think. You did not make a mistake.

CZs don't sell as well as other brands, I have run into store owners not enthusiastic about the brand for that reason. You would think this guy would be thrilled at your interest. Oh well. You should be happy with yours.

The HK VP9 and P30 have the modular grip side shells and backstrap so you can tailor the grip to your shooting hand. I have the largest grip shells and backstrap on my own P30 9mm, and IMHO it definitely improves the way this gun hits a target for me.
