Beretta or Taurus

Did some research chosen to pick the beretta now just need a price

Great choice, for all the reasons LockedBreech and others stated.

Which of the different 92 models (92FS, 92G, M9, M9A1, and 92A1) are you interested in, by the way?

The Taurus is made in a former Beretta factory on Beretta machinery.

That was true when the factory was originally handed over. However, that was a good while ago. Since that time, both Taurus and Beretta have made numerous design changes. It may be former Beretta machinery, but it is not to the standards of the 92s being produced on current Beretta machinery.

More to the point, the machining isn't where Taurus consistently fails, it's the quality control and material sourcing. Taurus has a lot of really cool designs, but they don't have stringent enough factory controls and subpar guns regularly make it to store shelves.

This is all true. I just want to mention that Beretta and Taurus have each changed their tooling several times since Taurus took over Beretta's Brazilian factory. And, regardless, the machinery doesn't simply run itself. All gun companies use advanced CNC machinery for production firearms, but the build quality, fit, and finish of the guns produced varies widely across the industry. The skill of the machinists and the workload they're asked to perform are tremendously important variables.

Before I got my present full size 9mm I went through the same agony trying to choose between Beretta and Taurus. I really kinda liked the idea of the frame mounted safety that is more natural and 1911 like. While I was dizzy trying to figure out which one I wanted I came across the TriStar T-120. That's my present full size 9mm. Love the gun. Love the CZ platform. Love the price point. Do yourself a favor if you haven't become dead set on a Beretta yet, check out the CZs and their clones. I still might get a Beretta or Taurus (in .40 S&W) but my TriStar isn't going anywhere!

Easy: get the real thing. You will regret getting the imposter a few days after purchase. A beretta is something that can be passed down, a Taurus holds zero value. Is $100 or whatever really worth it when in the back of your mind you know you fd up?

Taurus vs Beretta

If you wish to maximize resale potential, no contest, Beretta will be a better choice. Although I am not a huge Taurus fan, the PT-92 shoots identically well with the 92FS. Long trigger pull, very short reset.

In some ways, I like the features of the Taurus better (mainly the original Beretta frame-mounted safety which allows you to carry cocked and locked if you wish.) I bought one for $329 from Academy and have no fear I can't get my money back out of it. But prices have climbed and the PT-92 is not the deal it once was. The difference is $100 - $150 now, maybe lower if you buy on sale somewhere. I would probably buy a Sig Pro model instead at that price.

One thought, in terms of the PT-92 being an imposter, is every 1911 but a Colt an imposter also?

Well Pico, Since Colt was the original major producer of the M1911 for Uncle Sam, then they would not be an imposter. I do catch your drift.

I do believe a typewriter company by the name of Remington Rand produced the largest amount of US Government purchased 1911 format pistols and their electric shaver division Sunbeam made and sold the most 1911 magazines.

I vaguely remember something that Remington Rand was part of Remington firearms before they became the typewriter company.

Would an ffl dealer be willing to come down like 50-100 off the price looked up for the beretta 92fs is $675 on beretta website

$675 is MSRP. Nobody pays MSRP unless the gun is super popular or hard to find. The Beretta is neither. You should be able to do $600 or better if you look around.

I agree Remington Rand build the most M1911A1's but did not produce M1911's.

Colt was by far the largest producers of M1911s.

Of total M1911's and M1911A1's, I think the following is a good estimate:

Colt - At Least 673,154 This does not include the number of Commercial 1911s they produced in early days after 1914 when they were under Government Contracts.

Remington Rand - Produced 877,751 after 1941.

The above numbers were deliverables under Government contracts and not test units and various other gifted and in house units of various sorts.

So, Remington Rand did not start production until the WWII war effort. This was dedicates after Colt started their first production effort for WWI and before.

Turn in

Maybe try for a used Beretta police turn in. New I wouldn't pay more than $550.

Good facts about the 1911's guys!

Beretta all the way... The Taurus is a good gun and as others have stated it might be the best gun they produce assuming we are talking about the 92FS and is brethren. These days the price difference is not enough to warrant not getting the Beretta.

They can be had for right around $500+ shipping and transfer on GB NIB. You can find them LNIB for around $450+ shipping and transfer.

So will I be able to haggle them down a little bit or no

It's not about haggling. The standard 92FS sells for ~$600 at my LGS, and I don't regard that as an amazing deal. Hardly any retailer will try to sell a mass-production gun for its MSRP.

Do you live near an Academy? They often have good prices. Call around to different gun shops. Look on Gunbroker. There are a ton of NIB Berettas going for $520-550 on GB right now. Yes, you have to pay shipping and an FFL transfer fee with a GB purchase, but if you buy from an out-of-state seller, you don't have to pay sales tax on your purchase.

I would recommend going with the Beretta. For a little more money you can have a great pistol that you can say is a keepsake.
