Bend Over America - Senators say they have deal on immigration

WASHINGTON - Senate Republicans and Democrats closed in on a last-minute compromise Thursday on legislation opening the way to legal status and eventual citizenship for many of the 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said he had been assured President Bush supports the measure, and would publicly say so later in the day.

As outlined, the measure would provide for enhanced border security, regulate the future flow of immigrants into the United States and offer legalized status to the millions of men, women and children in the country unlawfully.

"We've had a huge breakthrough" overnight, said Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.

Not done deal yet
Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic leader, agreed, but cautioned that the agreement had not yet been sealed.

Even so, the presence of both leaders at a celebratory news conference underlined the expectation that the Senate could pass the most sweeping immigration bill in two decades, and act before leaving on a long vacation at the end of the week.

The developments marked a turnaround from Wednesday, when it appeared negotiations had faltered. The key sticking point involved the 11 million illegal immigrants in the country, and the struggle to provide them an opportunity to gain legal status without exposing lawmakers to the political charge that they were advocating amnesty for lawbreakers.

While final details were not available, in general, the compromise would require illegal immigrants who have been in the United States between two years and five years to return to their home country briefly, then re-enter as temporary workers. They could then begin a process of seeking citizenship.

Illegal immigrants here longer than five years would not be required to return home; those in the country less than two years would be required to leave without assurances of returning, and take their place in line with others seeking entry papers.

Not everyone was satisfied. A spokesman for Sen. John Cornyn said the Texas Republican was opposed to the measure. There was no immediate reaction from GOP Sens. Jon Kyl of Arizona or Jeff Sessions of Alabama, two other prominent critics of earlier proposals dealing with illegal immigrants.

Debate includes other issues
Beyond the illegal immigrants, there were other thorny issues to be clarified. Senate leaders had yet to publicly unveil draft legislation to make sure that only legal workers were hired in the future, for example.

Nor was it clear what type of assurances, if any, Democrats had received from the White House and Republicans about compromise talks with the Republican-controlled House later this year. The House has approved legislation limited to border security, and while GOP leaders have signaled support for a broader measure, Democrats have expressed concern in recent days that they will be pressured to make unacceptable additional concessions to achieve a final compromise.

The closed-door negotiations proceeded as the Senate went through the motions on a test vote on an earlier version of immigration legislation.

Democrats needed 60 votes to prevail, and as expected, they fell far short. The attempt gained only 39 votes, while 60 senators were opposed.

In an ironic juxtaposition, the vote unfolded at the same time Frist, Reid and more than a dozen other senators were celebrating the breakthrough.

So how many illegals do you see volunteering to pay back taxes and penalties? (not many I'll wager...)

If they do pay that implicates their employers, a good thing in my opinion!

If they fail to comply with the rules of tax and penalty payment we toss their asses, right?

While I hate the concept of giving them a means to become legitimate after having broken the law perhaps this is not so bad. This about it, something that gives an option for illegals to stay would overcome many of the hudles on the left as well as our President (who has the backbone of a slinky on the issue). At the same time the method is one which very few will follow, removing any excuse those on the left have for us not tossing them! This will be interesting to watch...

doesn't seem so bad. it would be stupid to simply say "go back home", to try "rounding them up" like wild animals or something. it would be equally as stupid to build a damn wall (hey, without all that cheap labor, who's going to build it?) or start shooting anyone that crosses the border

This seems like a decent compromise. Many of those millions are working their asses off, this way they'll be paying taxes. Granted there's the argument that they're leeching off the state but I doubt there are more illegals doing so than natural born citizens; the best way to fix the problem is to fix the system because you're not going to stop the abusers from doing what they do.

There's already a deal in place that Bush approves of: Unfettered illegal "immigration" from Mexico in exchange for access to Mexican oil.

Meanwhile, get ready to pay $4 per gallon for 87 octane this summer. Anyone else hear the Deliverance banjo music playing in the background yet??

While you're getting sodomized at the gas pump, keep in mind that oil company profits are at their highest in history and the oil company CEO's who make millions in salary are getting millions in bonuses, paid for by the $60 dollar tanks of gas we are trapped into paying for.

Walls are expensive but two chain link fences with land mines in between are far more cost effective. I have no problem with that.

Rounding them Up is not so har either as I can pass over 100 every morning at just one corner. If INS started hanging out near the pick up sites with tractor trainlers we could get most of them out of here pretty damn fast. I am certain teir negihbors here on Long Island would be happy to call in the houses that are full on the block with 20 - 30 of them as well. It is not that we can't do it, just that we lack the will.

They will still not pay taxes. They broke the law to get here, broke the law while here, and will continue to do so when offerred an option that be legal that will hit them in the wallet.

So, just becasue we have natural born citizens who are leeches means we should pay for other nation's leeches as well. Are we going to start establishing healthcare for all of Mexico and Latin America? Do you live in an area, like those in the SW where emergency rooms are closing because of the $$$ loss from illegals? Would you have a problem with your loved one dying in an ambulance that needed to go twice as far because the local ER had to close due to illegals?

I am leaning towards supporting this legislation only because when the illegals fail to live up to their end of the bargain people are going to have no excuse for keeping them here or treating them as law abiding individuals.

i am with you on that one if we start picking them up they will go some where like the movie born in east la " what do we do now we have a beer and figure out how to be back at work by monday" if we kick them out they will be they but a platoon of usmc snipers and spoters should solve a lot of the problem pretty fast.

because people deserve to die for wanting to work?

you really think it would work like that?
They will still not pay taxes. They broke the law to get here, broke the law while here, and will continue to do so when offerred an option that be legal that will hit them in the wallet.
how do you know this? do you know what it is to be an illegal alien? do you understand that the majority of them know they could have many more options if they were legal? do you realize that most of them know that they're unprotected by our legal system because of their status?

they broke the law because it was far easier than doing it legally. were it easier to enter the country legally than illegally you would have fewer illegalls in the first place.

You missed my point. Getting rid of the illegals won't stop those problems as much as attacking the problems at the source. You're talking about putting a band-aid on a severed limb.

I am leaning towards supporting this legislation only because when the illegals fail to live up to their end of the bargain people are going to have no excuse for keeping them here or treating them as law abiding individuals.
You seem to assume that they won't live up to their end of the bargain. Why is that?

We should kick out ALL the illegals in our posh prison system 1st. Fence off the border, and penalize employers for hiring illegals.

I want to see ALL these so called immigrants to start paying their share of taxes. No more free liberal social feel good programs, unless we can put a check box on tax returns so the liberals who love all this illegal immigration can dig deep into their own pockets and pay for it.

American's are gonna get stiffed again and again, I sure hope all these low wage illegals can pay for real American's to retire and pay for our health care.

Redworm I am sorry but getting rid of the illegals WILL help the problems I mentioned in the neighborhoods that have them. It is that simple.

People do not deserve to die for wanting to work. They are also not allowed to invade the USA. The Mexican government supports this invasion with advice, liturature and on occasion troops (as has been documented several times). You want to work, get in line and come here legally. It is too hard to come her legally, tough. I could make a million dollars a hell of a lot easier by selling drugs or committing fraud but I do not.

A fence with landmines is not a death sentence, if they wish to play Russian Roulette with their lives let them, nobody is forcing them to come across.

Gatherring them up would not be nearly as hard as people think. They are here to work and they almost always congregate at pick up sites for jobs. Start by grabbing them there. People are quick to say it can't be done but damn slow to try.

Why do I think they will not follow the rules, because they haven't followed any so far!

The bottom line is we really do not need them! Americans have gotten lazy. Cheap and illegal labor has destroyed the wage base of many jobs, hurting tons of Americans. It has also prevented us from pursuing more efficient methods that are not labor based in our manufacturing industries. As a result we grow less and less competitive with nations like China where we will NEVER win on labor. In the meantime Americans should get off their lazy asses and mow their own lawns like I do.

Having been born and raised in Miami, I know a little something about the issue of massive immigration of cheap labor, legal or not.

The thing is, you have to simply do what I did. Stop whining and compete.

Walls are expensive but two chain link fences with land mines in between are far more

Im with ya!!!!! Thier kids steal our kids educations. Slowing down the class, filling seats, eating on free lunch cards, all ror FREE! If you dont think there are Americans who want those 6$/ hr jobs, your nuts. Look at all the Americans working at Wally world. I have no problem with work visas, but why let them stay? I dont want to pay 5$ for an orange, but if I could earn more than15$/ hr I probably wouldnt mind so much. Why pay me when an illegal will do it for 1/2 of that? I cant do it for that! I wont let my child sleep in a roach infested slum! This is the main reason for the widening separation of rich and poor. I know 2 people with masters degrees that work for 7$/ hr. So many people went to college, that the market is saturated. They are lucky to make thier student loan payments each month. GM,Ford,Maytag. The list of American companies in Mexico is staggering! Thier workers here + our companies there= 3rd world country in 10 yrs!

We'll never have rest on the border until Mexicans can honestly believe their own country is free and there is opportunity to live a decent life there. The simplest solution would be to arm them and send them home.

"Anyone else hear the Deliverance banjo music playing in the background yet?? "

yup...today especially.2.80/gallon 87 octane locally.theyre giving away door prizes to whomever buys the most gas...a free sucker.

heres a novel idea..start legal immigration in mexico.they have to go through all the same things everybody else does and learn english as well.then they can come over where they will get an id card, after a complete background check of course, and get to enjoy the wonders of paying for everything themselves...and the joys we all get to look forward to at tax time.

fair is fair, why should they get a free ride when everybody else has to pay??

Hey, maybe drug dealers ought to band together and demand a similar deal. If you've been dealing for more than five years, you can ply your trade legally. Between 3 and 5 years, pay a fine and you're legal. Less than 2 years, and you go to jail.

Only the United States Senate could come up with a plan that rewards long term lawbreaking.

How many illegal immigrants do you suppose are going freely admit that they've only been here 2 years. The Senate's just given all 11 million a free pass!
